Yep, That's what I intended to tell the person. I think a little common sense is the order of the day. Although...I have been asked for some outrageous sums of money from artists a number of times for reviewing their material or using an promo image of them. I even helped create a website for one artist in order to publicise his work and was then, 6 months later, contacted by the very same artists' management with a view to paying a fee for using imagery of the artist on his own website! I've just been asked a question by someone who is looking to publish images of well known record labels on a website and maybe printed material. I was asked if the images I have used in the past of labels, logos etc are in the public domain or or copyrighted by the owners? To be honest it's not something I've considered at great length before. If I ever use something from another site or a previous publication I've always sought the permission of that site/mag owner but to be honest...do they own the copyright? By the same token if anyone has asked to use images/photos I own I always give permission but do I really 'own' them. Don't wanna get to anal about it all but just looking for some input before I reply to the query. Don't want to give bad advice. Regards, Dave

100% correct. On occasions the Post Mistress I had would open up an hour early for Bev and I too do the business. Nothing worse than standing behind someone mailing 50 packages! When we first started could be in the PO for a couple of hours! Suppose in a main PO it may be quicker but ours was a nightmare. Regards, Dave

Plus, if these clubs did play the range of music styles it must have soon petered out as I can't recall anyone in UK playing Reggae, ska or any of that stuff at Northern venues apart from peripheral scenes like Scooterists etc. Regards, Dave

I have both in front of me now and the Charisma copy is much lighter/flimsier vinyl. I agree it doesn't really mean anything conclusively, hence my remark in reference to the lack of provenance of the disc. I'm presuming (maybe wrongly), that you think it is a contemporary (with Tuff) press? Have you any info that leads you to this conclusion? It would be great to finally nail this one if possible. When I spoke to Tim he'd had the 45 in his hands at some stage I think. Regards, Dave

And there you have it. In a nutshell. Thing is Paul, in 10 years time when you guys take over the reigns you lads will be the next generation of stuck in the mud diehards!! Actually I don't see your event (s) as part of the Northern Soul scene or even part of it's evolution. I see it as a totally different 'scene'. The mix of Soul, Ska, Reggae, Mod, and the other stuff has never been part of the Northern Allnighter scenario. I do think though that, as your generation get older you'll see the majority of them ditch the Mod, music, stylee part of their lives and you'll have a much harder time trying to keep it all going than we had. 100%. I've attended gigs where younger DJs play me a record that they've just paid 300UKP for and it's also owned/played by 90% of existing DJs! They play it, are disappointed with the reaction and can't understand why? Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. As for the younger guys not getting a look in I also agree that there's no point on booking a 25 year old DJ to play Epitome of Sound just because he's 25. Pointless. The availability of good solid Northern Soul Records is still out there but not in the quantity or at prices they used to be so that's why the younger element 'DJs" latch onto the Mod image. Ska, popcorn, reggae abound in the European clubs side by side. Look at the playlists at Beat Boutique in Manchester. Same scenario there, younger lads wanting to DJ, couldn't compete at the higher levels of the regular Northern Soul scenes so started their own gigs/scene. More power to their elbow I say. Their gigs are well attended and no doubt they'll drag a percentage of their punters with them as they develop. As they grow and develop their collections they'll eventually naturally 'take over' when we've finished but it will be their own creation at the centre of it and not the faded memories of some old ballroom in Wigan. Hi there, You're not gonna like this but...........it's up to you to meet the criteria of the Soul scene not the soul scene to pander to your criteria in order to make it easier for you to DJ with bootlegs. The way to do it is to build up a collection AND THEN look at DJing NOT the other way round. Sorry if that sounds a little harsh Mate but that's the way it is, always has been and always will be if you want to be a decent DJ at Northern Soul venues. Otherwise you'll have to do what many others do...start your own venue. Regards, Dave

Hello Mate, I have three copies of ERJ. Tuff Issue Tuff W/D Charisma The stampers are the same I agree but the difference in vinyl is definitely there. I also spoke to Tim Brown about the Charisma 45 and he thought it may well be a later release too. As I said, I'm not too sure about the provenance of the Charisma 45 so if anyone has any info it would be appreciated. I do agree however that it's a real deal rarity for sure. Regards, Dave

Hi Tim, Hope you're well Matey. I rate a minter at around 100. I've had the opportunity to buy two at 150 and 125 respectively so I'm not far out. There was one listed on Ebay (Twice) for 125 that never attracted a bid. The Chrisima 45 I've only ever seen 2 of. (Not sure of the provenance of this one either, same stampers etc but most definitely a later issue than Tuff). The Pandora 45 I'm lucky to have owned for near 20 years so the Stagemasters would round off a nice trio of records from that particular era. The hunt goes on... Best, Dave
