  1. Stuff like Black Sugar has been huge for years. Perhaps not on the northern scene, but for example the Black Sugar LP that includes "Too Late" was reissued in 2007 due to heavy demand for it. That's 6 years ago. I wouldn't say that "Too Late" is a tune that has been enjoyed within a small circle, thousands of people (perhaps outside of the northern soul scene) have been raving about that LP and 45 for years. Split Evolution is definitely far less known compared to Black Sugar, and harder to track down, but has had plays all over Europe for quite some time, has been included in playlists and on popular podcasts (that have been heard by, again, thousands of people).
  2. Black Sugar has been £150/£200+ for the past 5 years at least. Split Evolution is hardly an unknown record but also difficult to locate copies of. Doesn't surprise me that people want a lot of money for it. "Unknowns" will always easily sell at high prices if the person selling them knows what they've got on their hands and who they should offer them to.
  3. Several other 45's on that label.

Just found a YouTube video clip posted with Manship's account on the 18th of May 2013: It is the 213-384-9334 variation. He must've made a typo earlier regarding the 213-750-4966 phone number which as far as I know can only be found on the Village Crusaders 45.
  6. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Same here, would be great if he cleared it up. Inoticed that he has changed the description again. It now doesn't state anything about the phone number. Going by the blurry scan, I assume that he made a typo earlier and that his auction copy actually has got 213-384-9334 on it.
  7. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
THANKS! Looks like the yellow "shake hands" issue that Manship is auctioning right now is the first release after all then. The orange is the second issue. Great stuff!
  8. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Very blurry, but that scan definitely doesn't read 750-4966.
  9. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Would love to see a scan of the above for verification.

The phone number Manship is quoting can be found on the Village Crusaders 45, I've never seen it on the Bob Relf 45 though. If that number is on the yellow label Bob Relf that he is auctioning (I can't tell from the scan on his site, it is too small) then I guess there really is no doubt that the yellow one with 750-4966 number is the original. And hideously rare as well! This is what I've found: TA #0007 - 213-466-1281 : Sam And The Soul Walkers TA #0008 - 213-750-4966 : Village Crusaders TA #0009 - 213-384-9334 : Aki Aleong (reissue of VEE JAY #527) TA #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf (YELLOW) TA #0010 - 213-389-9938 : Bob Relf (ORANGE) TRANS #0010 - 213-384-9334 : Bob Relf The Joel Hill, Will Wendel, Expressos and Montereys 45s with a different catalouge numbering system are obviously released on a related TRANS AMERICAN label, but they date from much earlier (1960-1962).
  11. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
In that case... why would they use the wrong/old telephone number (384-9334) on the label of the official 1973 reissue on Trans?
  12. Sebastian replied to a post in a topic in Look At Your Box
Regardless of rarity YELLOW vs ORANGE... didn't we come to the conclusion in an old thread that the orange label ones (with the different phone number on the label) is the first issue? The yellow "shake hands" label has got the same phone # as the official second issue on Trans. 1. Orange TRANS-AMERICAN issue (telephone # on the label: 213-389-9938) 2. Yellow TRANS-AMERICAN issue (telephone # on the label: 213-384-9334) 3. Official 1973 re-issue on TRANS (telephone # on the label: 213-384-9334)
  13. I don't know what the deal was with the Raymond Smith ("Seven Day Lover", #7007) and Trieste ("I Can See Him Loving You", #7021) 45's as far as the northern soul scene was concerned. It seems like there was some "input" from the UK side of things to get those recorded but I don't know for sure. Apart from those releases though, most of the remaining 20+ 45's on that label are of high quality and doesn't seem to have anything to do with tailor mades etc. Some of my faves: Steptones - Let The People Talk Calvin Arnold - Satisfy My Woman Randy Brown - It Ain't Like It Used to Be Pride, Passion & Pain - Some Kind Of Man Crystal Image - Gonna Have A Good Time
  14. If it reads: "Your Number One" on the label = ORIGINAL ISSUE. "You're Number One" on the label = SECOND ISSUE.
  15. I have no idea actually, the Okeh 45 is from 1968 if I remember correctly so seems plausible. There's two tracks on the acetate, a deep soul ballad on the flipside.
  16. Previous thread about this with Dave's list of unissued tunes that have turned up on Kent CDs: That thread was more than a year ago though, so a lot of stuff has been released since then.
  17. Sometime in the 70's I guess when many of the other blue/black labeled Arctic second issues appeared. Why? To make money I'd think.
  18. First issue: light blue label with BLUE text. Second issue: slightly darker blue label with BLACK text.
  19. Hugh Boynton, Gerald Faulk and Joe Chopper are some.
  20. Yes, from 1975: https://www.discogs.com/Harold-Melvin-And-The-Blue-Notes-Get-Out-And-Let-Me-Cry-You-May-Not-Love-Me/release/2431510
  21. I've only skipped through it so far, but that looks awesome! Thanks for flagging it up.
  22. 23. The BLUE CANDLE label is mentioned as being one of Henry Stone's labels in the 26 February 1972 issue of Billboard so must've been started prior to that. Blue Candle #1493 is often claimed to be the first 45 on the label ("Funky Pants"/"Cutting Room" by Oceanliners), but the George McCrae 45 is earlier, i.e. #1492.
  24. I looked into it a bit more and I was a bit wrong. It gets interesting. The SOUL CITY release is definitely from 1974, but it seems to have been a cash-in release to capitalize on the success of "Rock Your Baby". The SOUL CITY 45 carries a United Artists catalogue number (XW-456) which places it as a 1974 release (the previous UA distributed 45 with cat# XW-455 is a Blue Note label release by the way). I don't know when Soul City ceased to release records on a regular basis, but the label seems to have been reactivated for the George McCrae release. Here is the mention of the Soul City 45 in Billboard Magazine from 20 July 1974: In the same issue, the "Rock Your Baby" LP is reviewed as well which seems to back the theory that the SOUL CITY 45 was a cash-in attempt: However... the UNITED ARTISTS issued US 45, with cat# 50811 seems to have been released in July 1971! It is mentioned in Billboard Magazine from 31 July 1971: Now I'm actually not 100% sure where the BLUE CANDLE 45 fits into it all, but I still believe that it was the local release prior to the UA 45. It can't be from 1974, that would mess up the entire Blue Candle discography. The european UNITED ARTISTS releases that I have seen of this 45 are however from 1974, mirroring the SOUL CITY release.
  25. I quite like the other Essence Of Love 45 on K-CITY as well.
