  1. Neutral ground/year zero - Ground zero? Lets have an atomic revolution?
  2. No but its the end of the world in a few hours so the bidder is probably convinced he won't really have to pay for it
  3. Who knows mate, in the last week or two I've seen a Little Joe Roman pressing go for £80 and £12 Got £3 for mine a few years ago
  4. Quite true Paul but its the £1 ones that make me wince Got an old Rob Smith list with Parliaments - Heart Trouble at 50p They're the painful ones, not necessarily big rarities but ones you could have easily afforded at the time
  5. Its quite hard for us old 'uns as well
  6. That is the crux of the problem, DJ's are terrified to play a record that might have a lesser number of people dancing or, god forbid, empty the floor completely. The main criteria for a good/banging/stonking night is a full floor from start to finish and anything less is considered failure and as Dekka says leaves the DJ open to ridicule or even abuse. Until this attitude changes its groundhog day as usual for most. On a positive note I have spoken to people who frequent oldies venues recently who are getting fed up over constantly hearing the same records but obviously not enough to make a difference yet.
  7. 80% of it still plays what more do you want?
  8. I always find threads like this interesting, rights and wrongs put aside its all part of the history of the scene in the 70s. I was slightly to young to be involved in the "golden period" but have always loved to hear and read about those time. Any threads involving/about any of the major players of the time are ok by me? Ian Dewhirst maybe you should write a book? I'd buy a copy
  9. There is still a proper scene but its struggling to keep afloat IMO due to a multitude of factors not least lack of numbers. The scene and venue you describe in your second post is about as far away from where it should be as is possible and again IMO is a dead loss. Its never going to change so there's no point in keep going over this old ground time and time again. The inmates have definitely taken over and are fully in control of the asylum PS dont forget the Jean Genie factor in all this!
  10. Went to a local do a couple of years ago and a nationally well known DJ was on, he'd travelled about 200 miles and proceeded to do the most dull unimaginative spot that any Tom Dick or Harry in the place could have done. Why bother?
  11. Now thats a corker!!
  12. Message to God, please don't let me look at this thread again - I have absolutely no self control
  13. Here we go again, grab your partner by the hand...............
  14. Just had a listen, don't you think that JM's description is a little over the top? Potential to be the scene's top tune? Come on, its a decent enough record but its very give me just a little more time like - could you imagine Butch or Andy Dyson or any of the other top jocks playing it? Could see it being big with Kev Roberts' clientele so I suppose if thats "the scene" then he's right
  15. A distinct lack of foresight there Ady, you really ought to have been thinking "I'll buy these and sit on em till the 21st century"
  16. Yeah I was surprised that it wasnt in there - always been in amongst all the classic oldies from the mid 70s era for me
  17. I fully agree Rob lock the bastards up! Chained in a dungeon preferably
  18. Its not really a surprise mate, the inhabitants of the East Midlands oldies scene were, in the main, on their 20 year sabbatical when it was the biggest record on the scene. Thats why the response is like it is, because they dont remember it from their youth. As an observer of the aforementioned scene over the last 15 years I've seen countless examples of this phenomenon. Sad but true! One of my fondest memories is of Richard Searling playing it on a midweek night upstairs at the Eight Bells in Mansfield in 1979. The best DJ and the biggest record on the scene, playing in a small room above a pub - it was like having a private audience with the pope! A tune of tunes
  19. They're all brilliant.
  20. Definitely done to stop other people getting one and its still done today although for obvious reasons not on the same scale as in days gone by
  21. Saw Ann Peebles & Martha & Vandellas at Wigan 1978/9 cant be sure of exact year
  22. Theres a cracking clip on Facebook/youtube of them on dinner break in the pub. Its just someone filming on their mobile and they're all relaxing and having a drink, the musics on and some of them are dancing and generally messing about. They all look like they're enjoying themselves and it comes across as really natural and realistic to me. Hope this is how it comes across in the film, without wanting to be critical - some of the clips I've seen seem a bit too formulaic like they're trying too hard? Anyway I reckon this will be the last time anything like this is attempted and is as realistic as its ever going to be so I hope its a success.
  23. Just saw a Pointer Sisters wright sound boot go for £45 I sold one on ebay for £4 earlier this year
  24. Top stuff pal
