50 Key Landmark Moments In Northern Soul History
1995(ish) Lots of 30 somethings start returning to the scene after 20 years away doing domestic things. Most of these have no idea that there was a scene between 1975-95 while they were away and consequently dismiss this period totally. Only wishing to hear records that they can remember from 1975 thereby resulting in the stagnation seen at the majority of venues for evermore hereafter. Thats not a dig by the way before anyone says, just following Mikes instruction- date, event, reason ( significance for the scene) Not intended to start any sub-debate

50 Key Landmark Moments In Northern Soul History
1978/9 Richard Searling starts playing his famous new batch of quality big sounds ( Cecil Washington etc) Thereby steering the scene away from the pop dross that threatened to drown it in a sea of mediocrity and setting the foundations for Stafford etc that was to follow.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Winnie as we all know this and similar topics have been done to death time and again over the life of soul source . I'm not sure if I'm entirely right here but it seems to me that the "oldies only" people are never quite as vocal in putting their side of the debate over. You get the odd one saying "I like what I like and thats it" etc but maybe they dont have the same passion (in general) as those who are constantly striving to hear new records and broaden their knowledge? Contentious point I know

Very true Len, a lot of people are missing out on hearing some fantastic music due to certain misconceptions - thats the real shame of all this.

Epitome Of Sound
Mark, a lot of the bootlegs made in the 70s were pressed at Monarch as well as originals going back to the 60s. As Pete said the delta number will give you a pretty accurate date when the record was made.
-
Epitome Of Sound
A record made at Monarch pressing plant in Los Angeles (West Coast) easily identifiable by a stamp and delta number

Next Weekend
This goes against the grain for me but not having been to a northern do for 30 years I think you'd be better sticking to a venue that plays classic oldies only. Kingsway Hall at Forest Town (near Mansfield) would give you just that but its a long way to travel for a night that finishes at 12.30ish. Sorry cant recommend anything further South along those lines. Have fun whatever you do

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
With all due respect that is a load of tripe and gives a false impression of Lifeline - it also fuels the fire of those who imagine that the rare scene is made up of a few "chinstrokers" standing round looking bored. I dont know how many times you've been to lifeline but the dance floor gets plenty of action right up till 7am when Rob Smith has to be peeled away from the decks. Anyway whats this obsession with a "packed" dance floor? I agree there's nothing better than a busy dance floor in full flow and the atmosphere that it generates but this packing the dance floor business winds me up. The number of times that I've read on lookbacks threads "so and so came on and packed the dance floor" Usually in my experience this is because of lowest common denominator records being played as opposed to the the DJ actually playing quality tunes with any imagination

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
It'll be interesting to see what this fetches, one went through ebay last week for about £27. About 9/10 months ago I missed one at £7.99 on ebay cos I forgot to bid, no one else bid on it. The seller immediately relisted it so the following week I bid £8.20 for it thinking no one would be interested - it went for £8.40! Doh

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
This isn't really about the quality/trustworthiness of dealers like John Manship, its about a record that is generally valued at lets say £50, the record then fetches say £300 on JM's auction. This then becomes the records"value" for some people who also try to sell it for £300. That was petes original point.
