  1. who`s makin love.... willie mitchel, seems to always get over looked, was a big play at Samanthas
  2. just listened to jive talkin on u tube, no way would that record fit in with the sounds being played at wigan.
  3. played at samanthas, a JV spin if I remember correctly
  4. that would be great news, it was probably the best nighter at the time
  5. I have this on a wigan tape from around the 1st anniversary, so would be late 74 I would guess
  6. don't think there was anything played that you could call a typical sammy`s sound, in the main room it was current sounds from Wigan Cleethorpes and the mecca, there was also an oldies room
  7. is this the same George Clinton as please don't run, cos it sounds nothing like him I thought the documentary was very informative, I honestly didn't realise how close / similar the funk scene was to the northern scene
  8. i think velvet satins is also around 1.55
  9. anything from Bowie would do me
  10. Got mine in the post this morning, played it through and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of soul on the compilation. I`ve had various xmas soul comps in the past which have been disappointing to say the least, but this one ticks all the boxes.....thanks for the heads up
  11. I remember going to a niter in redhill, notts on a couple of occasions, at the leisure centre. Memory not too good think it was early eighties although could have been 79 so maybe doesn't qualify. .
  12. yep, i thought that was ok
  13. was talking to a "polish" friend at work about music and I got on to northern soul, it was difficult to explain what it was all about and how it developed, so I agreed to do her a couple of cd`s covering northern, crossover and modern.....must say i`ve got some fantastic ideas of the tracks to use just by reading this thread....thanks
  14. Top tune, should go down really well
  15. cant help but notice no one has attempted to comment on this, i wonder why/
  16. Very harsh, its all about opinions mate. I seem to remember all these records being floor packers, so the majority must have rated em. Another you`ll like...mistura / flasher
  17. Wigan has always been an easy target for the so called "purist brigade". I remember dancing to all the records mentioned in this thread, and aint ashamed to say so....I`ll throw another into the mix, "danse a la musique" anybody?
  18. Sammanthas`s Sheffield in 76 was the first for me, no idea what the first record was as it was well into the night before I recognised any, pretty sure Ian Dewhirst was the dj. I remember from that night tracks such as ton of dynamite, i`m your pimp, who`s makin love, do what you feel and dont it make you feel funky getting played, so by all accounts a cracking night and I`ve been hooked ever since

really sad to hear this news, without doubt one of my favourite artists, one of my top sounds from back in the day would be his version of "who`s making love" would be good to hear this get played on todays scene. R.I.P.
  20. the last one is shite!! IMO ---------------------- are you being serious, tears has always been in my top 10.
  21. I was thinking of changing the categories and using "music memorabilia" which is technically what Northern Soul is
  22. surely the records could be listed in a different category, if the words "northern soul" are included in the title, potential buyers will still find the items?
  23. my very first record of any genre was robert knight - love on a mountain top, though at the time I didnt even know what soul was never mind northern
  24. I definately remember having to go down a alley to get to the back of mr m`s, If i remember me and a mate must have got our days mixed up, think it was a fri nite, turned up to the front of the casino and it was all shut up, a local told us about the alley which led to the front entrance of mr m`s. As you say, probably only 100 or so in, but a crackin night none the less. was also defo an allnighter.
