Taking the Label topic on another path. What is behind the letters. For example on the SPQR Label (Lenis Guess etc) I was always convinced it was SMALL PROFIT QUICK RETURN. But, but, but. as I was watching the Gladiator on the telly a couple of nights ago, Old Russ Crowe had SPQR tattooed on his arm, which turned out to be the sign of the Roman Legion. So whats it to be? Second hand car sales jargon, or Fighting talk. Ed

You have to understand what a bootleg is. In some cases genuine US releases were brought out in the UK in a legit way and would be collectable (Grapevine, Stateside, etc). There are also US reissues that are legit (MCA, Columbia SP, etc). In both cases the reissues would have only gone ahead by customer demand. Then at the same time, came the illegal pressings, in some cases made to look identical to the real thing, and these flooded the scene in the 70s and 80s usually after a rare record had become a monster hit. Again customer driven because it was the only realistic way you could get it, unless you were rich. Most people on the scene then were not rich and so the pressings made alot of people happy and some dealers rich. Some DJs at that time may have helped create this situation. 25 years on, and telling whats real and genuine and whats not is indeed a skill known by a small few. Those who take collecting seriously. If you buy from The Manships and Soul Bowls of this world, it is probable that you will not get let down, but ebay is an auction and you pay before you receive, so watch out. I think 90% of collectors have a made a mistake once or twice, so my advice is to send off for as many lists as possible and compare whats what, before you rush into buying. If you look at this forum (in your box) lots of readers will give advice on individual records. Ed

OK at the LA soul event, wait for it, its not about meeting Frank Do I Wilson or Gwen Wanted Owens, which I did (along with another 400), no it was at the tables outside in the meet and greet room. As I was looking around at who's who, I noticed the 'Medallions' table (who) a 50s do wop outfit etc. The names cards on their table were of the groups members etc, including one EDDIE CARTER, my namesake. The group members were so impressed at this coincidence they gave me the name card and all signed it. Get in there!!!!!

Back to topic, and an answer to the question. Its the whole auction thing live on line that sucks people in because they do not want to loose the fight as much as anything. I recently bought Manships price guide book and see about 18,000 tunes that could be played at a rare soul event today, ie danceable soul, up to 1976 as a restriction just to get figure. I admit I have never heard of 40% of those listed but could also add a few thousand that are not in the guide. What do the readers think is an accurate number of tracks that could be or have been played? Ed
