  1. Probably...but I first heard it at the Windmill Rotherham along with Flame and King and even the Crow was resurgent. I think by 1980, several one week wonder Mecca records were getting a new lease of life. Around that time I read a story that Ian Levine off loaded a huge collection of stuff that was played once at most, and we're in the pipeline for breaking, but he needed cash quick and other djs bought them up. Ed
  2. Stay here with me was a monster sound in its own right for Pat Brady around 79/80 and probably an Ian Levine find earlier than that.? Ed
  3. RIP Doris Troy... I noticed Mr Levine had her re record some tunes. Maybe that was in the UK? Probably toured the world as a backing singer? Ed
  4. Gawd....I remember that AWFUL Candy Clown record getting played late 70s... Put me off clown records forever:) Ed
  5. It's easy to blame one person, but in reality, if you are going to pin it on commercialisation, Wigan went on many years after the chosen few and ovation sold their wares. A 23 year old is not the same as a 15 year old in every way imaginable. In short, you move on, and there were other musical tastes competing with the concept of Northern Soul. Nevertheless the nostalgia scene is bigger today than ever Wigan was, just look at the gig guide. Ed
  6. Rave music and the funk scene sucked up a lot of the new crop of kids coming in. Not just Wigan failed, plenty more did, like cleethorpes and the Mecca. As Rick suggests having to run the gauntlet of punks and sadly fellow soulies who would like to fight and steal your records was not helping. Much better to arrive by a bus full than straggle from the train. Ed
  7. Summer is here at last.. Ed
  8. Sad to leave.... But back to Rife in September. Ed
  9. The morning mist rising above La Gomera. Ed
  10. I suppose a mint copy could go for £200? Ed
  11. This was a big in demand record around 79 and harder to find than if this is love back then. At today's inflated prices, I'd have thought £200 was on the mark. First saw an original at Derby Assembly rooms nighter back then....maybe even 1980? As a 19 year old veteran I was miffed a kid younger than me had a box full of rarities like this for sale.....bloody audacity:) even had a Chandlers.. Ed
  12. It was certainly well attended! This day and age Mary could perhaps have been skyped in to say a few words. Ed
  13. Cheers Thanks for the tip.... Ed
  14. Not very flattering...but much the same as 77... Ed
  15. Oh... What's occurring? Going in July! Hope it's like this! Ed
  16. Indeed, for the man who named this phenomenon and for one of the men who championed the cause. Ed
  17. So a national 'Godin Northern Soul bank holiday ' is out of the question.... Maybe he can go on a stamp or a bank note? It's all good fun! Ed
  18. Hope they are both well, and attend the tribute night in Lincoln tomorrow. Ed
  19. This chap stood to be an MP for Labour. Is that not joining the establishment? I doubt he knows Mr Searling, or about our scene, or you. He is colorful though, and if his opinions float your boat, good on yer. Ed
  20. I'm shocked. Did not know anybody over the last 42 years I've had the honour of listening to Richard Searling have a negative thing to say about him! Yes, of course there's a list a mile long of other great stalwarts on the scene who deserve a gong, but Richard is right at the top of the pile. Gia Mateo springs to mind! Ed
  21. Do we have Barons? Or Counts for that matter:) Still room for a Marquess though.. Ed
  22. In the cause of services to soul music... Sir Richard is warranted. And I'd like to see a posthumous award to David Godin RIP...who named that phrase... And Controversially or not Mr Ian Levine surely must warrant a place in the house of Lords? The honours list could be quite long if you consider who made big impacts on this scene we love! Dame Mary Chapman? Earl Barnfather? Count Buttle? Viscount Heyden? Duke Curtis? Ed
  23. "Can one show a few moves to enlighten me on what this Northern Soul is all about" said her majesty to Mr Searling...... "Why of course ma'am" came the reply... "Please play this link on one's smart phone and the true Wigan legacy will be revealed" Suddenly her majesty throws herself into a spin, and follows up with a backdrop " How's that Dickie" screams the Queen. "Not bad for a first try ma'am " replies Richard. "Keep the faith Dickie' replies the Queen as Richard moves on so Soul Source Mike can pick up his gong for services to soul websites... Ed
