Dave, I don't know if it's just me or my mates, but back in the days, 68-75, then I would estimate that 80% of the people at allniters had gear as no.1 priority and sounds no.2, don't get me wrong, we all loved the sounds, but given the economics of the time and our age , where hardly in a position to buy what you wanted, even though plenty where new releases at that time. The two together where obligatory. Today, every do is the reverse-unfortunately! However, re Bletsoe and G&Cs, went only once and when asked if anyone had any gear, always wanted more, was pointed in the direction of a guy with a BOAC bag on his shoulder, the bag was full(around 1000) of G&C's, He was a well known lead singer of a late sixties mod band, then forgotten, obviously can't mention his name, given the place was a barn, then you where always looking at the weather. Shelly
  5. Times a Wasting Fuller Brothers; Remember me The Whispers What would I do The Tymes , What would I do Superiors Just Like the Weather Nolan Chance; Love Reputation Denise Lasalle How many times did Alan Day play these back to back at the Torch? Answer Loads Shelly
  6. Backed Elvis in the early days, also heard that Steve Cropper and his mates got involved at some stage, but not sure Shelly
  7. As we always got the 10.10pm train from Derby to Stoke and got in the Torch around 11.45, the sounds that hit you as you opened the door where always either Belles - Don't Pretend; Cooperettes -Shing a Ling or Soul Twins - Quick Change Artist, that was every week from early 72 onwards, whether it was the same dj or what I don't know, but it was almost the same time every week and it took coming up in to being smashed. Shelly
  8. Bill Black's Combo - Little Queenie, backing band for Elvis- supposedly. Shelly
  9. This came up in a zillion pint conversation last night, Bill Black's Combo -Little Queenie, I never dreamt they where white. Also, not mentioned before Bob Kuban-The Cheater, Lastly, Alvin Cash and the Register(nee Crawlers) are not white and never where. Shelly
  10. There's a thread on all our yesterdays "Best Sound by a White Artist before '73" which has been going for a while. You'll find loads more on that, the reason for staarting before the end of '73 was the load of pop crap played at Wigan after '73, including Tony Blackburns verion of "I'll Do Anything" What a lot of people don't realise or undersatnd, is that this was the way to get black music recognised in the UK, when small labels couldn't afford to promote and the bigger ones didn't want to . We all know of the rip offs etc, but Bessie Banks -Go Now and the Valentinos- It's Al Over Now, by the Moody Blues and the Stones respectively, did help gain greater recognition for the original artists. Obviously, this changed with lots of white artists creating their own recoreds with the same sounds. One that hasn't been mentioned on either thread is Spiral Staircase- More Today than Yesterday. Plus the Ventures ps Met Andy Fairweatherlow at Bletsoe alnighter in 72 with a bag full of g&c's Shelly
  11. Found this in a junk shop in late '74, couldn't get anyone to play it then. Sold it for 50p and went abroad mid '75, then they played it!. I think only record I ever discovered Shelly
  12. Julian Covay & the Machine - Little Bit Hurt, when was that first played,68? An absolute monster at 3am with half a dozen g&c's in the early days Roggert please answer. And those of you old enough, don't say you didn't dance to this - Woolly Bully - Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, because you'll be lying. Shelly

I give up, what happened on a Saturday afternoon, stayed on a Saturday afternoon. You saw and where even mates at the nighter with the biggest load knobheads when they're were at the footy, even had a load of mates from Notts and in footy terms not possible. So can we get back to reality and understand that Saturday afternoon and Saturday night was kept apart, and lets get back to the interesting scams and those that carried them out that were a part of the regular Saturday night. Remember being approached in Sams one night by Sean and being asked to look after his gear as two guys from Derby where going to kill him, shared some, sold the rest and when he asked fr it back at 4am told him to get real. The two guys from Derby where going to kill him because they thought me and G hadn't any gear(wrong) and he thought I was a trustworthy sort. Oh Happy Days

This as probably been discussed before, but on a recent vist to Tunstall I was only a few streets away from Hose Street and decided to look up the old valhalla, what a surprise when I saw the plaque saying " World Famous Soul Club 1964-1972" The Torch shut in March 1973, any reason for this? Would upload the photo as proof, but for some reason I can't. Sensible answers, and no I hadn't had a drink before. Shelly
  15. Dave Yes we met at the Torch, I was with Ruth Spence from Winchester at the time, remember her? Shelly

Wayne Fontana- Give me just a little more time only came out on demo, being withdrawn because of Chairmen of the Board/Invictus at the time. However, as you mention Mick Smith, then probably the souce was that shop in Roman Way top end of Caledonian Road c Kings X, that used to be full of british end of stock items, and if we hadn't been too pissed that day, we might have found a copy.

  18. Jesus, Sandra Foy, parents had the Woolpack pub in Rochdale, went out with her not long after you an her split up in 73, haven't heard anything about her since, you also mention Judy Moss, did we have the same taste in women or just friends? It was a long time ago!!!

Talking about that neck of the woods( or wild dog land) to give it it's true name, what about Messrs Jimmy Fay and Ray Evans from Ilkeston, apart from knocking off Julie Driscoll, Jimmy and Ray where a right pair, as you say, great to be on their side!
  20. I thought that Nicky was selling Ferraris form his garage outside Tansley. My understanding was that he'd got rid of the Dino because he couldn't afford the fuel/insurance/tax etc etc then, though why I don't know, he lost his license in middle 73 and Cleethorpes wasn't going then, but then I remember he did have the Dino for a short period in'74. I know he had around 50 motoring offences and when up in front of the beak, when asked about having no brakes his reply was " don't use them, haven't you heard of heel and toe" he also had a Right On the Torch badge in place of a tax disc on his Lotus at the time, class and a 6 month ban! Didn't Bridgette marry Dave Gilanders or did that end before the altar? saw him at his brother Robs 60th do the other week, first time for 30 odd years and didn't like to ask. Shelly

Ayup Mak, Old school buddy got off, you refused the invite, and I think I was out of the country, not on the run before anyone comments, so Techy's actually learnt something. Drop me a pm re the Poets, Tim and Bonsall fancy an afternoon. Shelly
  23. Good Jazz record, and I wasnt around so... but is this really northern rather than just a mod jaz record played in the same clubs? There's a cover version of this that's being doin the rounds recently, it's on one of the other forums and nowhere near as good a version. Shelly
  24. Last one promise, ? & the Mysterions - 96 Tears I reckon there's a hundred plus different sounds mentioned on this thread, so in reality could have a mini niter listening to "white artists", all we need to now is to discover that stash of White bombers hidden under a chicken shed near Crewe. Shelly
