What Year Was Wigan At It's Peak?
76-79 for me, Having read the other postings on this subject,It really depends on when you went,They would have been your best years, I went back once in 1980 still had a good night,But it was not as electric as I had remembered, Then again if I had started going in 1980 that would have been my best time,Because no matter what people say about it and some of the stuff that got played it was just a great place,And nothing will ever take the memories of it away,Having said that I can't really remember the first time I went,And there is no way I can remember the first tune I heard there

Is R'nb More To Do With Northern Soul
Got to agree really Phil,You would think from some peoples answers / replies that RnB or even RnR or and even Northern Soul was the cure for all,Its not!! At the end of the day they are just songs with people singing them,I as I have mentioned many times before on these and many other pages like to listen and dance to Northern Soul,That does not negate the fact that other people like RnB or RnR, Your original post about RnB relating to Northern or RnR,Has Iam afraid to say been reduced to YET AGAIN OLDIES vs NEWIES, Thats the way I view it,If Iam wrong then somebody please let me know(as Iam sure you will), I think once again that it is time to put this little baby to sleep, When I say oldies vs newies I can only state that I prefer the older end of the spectrum,Many people may read this and think Bullshit,That is their opinion,In 10 years time the newer end of the crew will want to listen to the oldies of their generation,Hence the popularity of the many "Old Skool" venues playing 80's stuff that you or I may call Disco Anyroad thats how I see it

- The Ritz,on A Bank Holidays
Just found our Reg https://www.manchesterbeat.com/groups/regcoates/regcoates.php Cool in a 70's sort of way really- The Ritz,on A Bank Holidays
There were signs also for all the resident artists that performed at the Ritz,The ones that stick in my mind where "The Reg Coates Expirience", Reg was a Tom Jones type performer who always had a massive female following,Legend has it that he was BIG in the downstairs department not sure if it was true but he used to shove the odd sock or two down his kecks,Or so rumour as it, Another resident artist at the Ritz were "Vic Lezalls Professionals",Don't know anything about them though, anyone got any info, Back to the All dayer subject was the "Car Wash " event the same one as the time they had a small cinema type screen and a projector showing scenes from the American "Soul Train" programme ??, Anyone remember that would be 76-77 ish- The Ritz,on A Bank Holidays
I was at that one also,Had Sam not caused a bit of a do,By saying it's 60's or nothing?, He played a blinder that day one of the best spots he ever did I think,Rammed out dance floor all through it,And then as you have mentioned "Car Wash", It is one of those"You had to be there moments" for me anyway,Brilliant- Va Va's
Was Troggs in Farnworth,?? If it was it i think it later changed to a place called "Chuffers", I worked there in the late 80's- Va Va's
I remember it being a disco in the 70's it was called Pips,Still full of chrome After that it was turned into a video arcade called Space City, Last time i was in Bolton it was part of the Job centre,No pics tho sorry- Save The Mary Fox Show
Always listen to this show on the I-player, Have signed the petition- Top 10 Northern/top 10 Soul
It really does hurt me girl -- The Carstairs What more can I say- Anyone Watching The Blues Documentary On Bbc4
more on in a minute or two BB king The kinks John lee Hooker- Frank Wilson -"he Who Shall Not Be Named" On Ss
There is nowt wrong with it and there never will be, Many of the people who snipe at it nowadays are the people who kept on asking for it to be played in the past,So they (and we) created the "Vampire", Many Dj's have used it as a get out of jail card in the past and if it was'nt for this paranoia about this record they still would, Mark Bicknell's comments about milk and flabby teets are spot on, Popularity is very fickle but a good song is still a good song- Hows Many Times Did You Go To The Casino?
Me to Phil same times 76--79 and more than likely with you and Dave- Anyone Ever Get Anything Nicked At Wigan

A few mentions earlier in this thread for Leslie Uggams,She played a major role in the TV mini series Roots a few years ago she played the part of Kizzy I think she was Kunta Kinte's wife??- Beachcomber Sunday Morning. Wigan
I may be wrong here so don't jump down my throat, Did the Beachcomber stop opening in the mornings about 77ish,And they re-opened M's in the morning??, Once again sorry if I'm wrong on this one(and many others I may add)- Whats Your Favourite Soul Concert Ever?
Tommy Hunt at Wigan The Exciters at Wigan Tavares at the Ritz Manchester Evelyn Thomas,L J Johnson,Barbara Pennington also at the Ritz Manchester The best entertainment at a live show I ever went to was Kid Creole and the Coconuts at the Manchester Apollo about 81-ish it was fantastic, The one I missed that I would have loved to have seen was EWF at Bingley,The best show ever so my mates tell me, Saw Prince in Manchester but not earth shattering,Was in America at the time of Michael Jacksons trial NOW that was a show- Tracks That Just Make People Smile
