  4. Sammy Lee was actually played by Russ at Wigan in the early years especially
  5. I think this is pretty rare on a stock copy : Nella Dodds - Honey Boy / I Just Gotta Have You - Wand .I bought a stock copy at Wigan for £8 in the late 70’s ,before selling at Keele in the mid 90’s .A few demos out there ,but very few issues .

  9. No I was 23 and living in a flat .Wigan Casino was about a year away from closing and a lot of records weren’t that expensive.I had a budget of about £20 a week for records .

  11. Superb record ,but John Anderson had lots of copies early 80’s .They’ve all disappeared into collections now sadly
  12. From the 60’s ,Patrice Holloway - Love And Desire / Ecstasy - Capitol .Two wonderful sides
  13. From the 70’s JP Robinson - Our Day Is Here / Keep Me Satisfied - Blue Candle
  14. One of my favourite books of recent times is “ Do Not Sell At Any Cost “ by Amanda Petrusich .Its the story of Amanda following the top blues 78 collectors in their quest to unearth pre war blues records .Its a great read and makes many of us obsessive collectors appear quite normal 😊.
  15. Dennis Edwards on the single ,Melvin Franklin on the different LP version .Its probably c 1968 because Gladys Knight cut it that year .
  16. William Boyd was mentioned on the “ Beneath The Covers “ book review programme last week ,I made a note to read “ Any Human Heart “ also .
  17. Cliff Goldsmith ,Eddie Rey and George Byrd were all bootlegged ,in smaller quantities than most 45’s at the time .The Specials and Oscar Perry would have been originals ,not expensive at the time .Things like Eula Cooper and Ollie Jackson were almost certainly bootlegs .As an indication ,about 1978 I payed £12 for an original Eula Cooper.
  18. I think boxing promoter Barry Hearn was involved also ,probably with Steve Davis’s prompting
  19. That’s excellent Sean ,many thanks
  20. I was already into Soul music in general aged 16 ,1973 .Myself and a friend went on holiday to Skegness Butlins and in the on site disco there was a few people there from Manchester .The DJ played Arthur Conley “ Funky Street “ and suddenly these guys started backdropping and dancing in fantastic style.Later we went back to the chalet and started practising the moves we’d seen ,backdropping on the end of the bed to begin with.We decided that when we returned home and went to Banbury Winter Gardens ,which was a huge venue ,with a dance floor bigger than Wigan ,we’d ask the DJ to play “ Funky Street “ and do our newly acquired dance .What happened next was unexpected,a circle of onlookers formed and watched .Afterwards we got a mixture of “well done “ from mainly girls ,and “ I’m gonna kick your head in “ by the girls boyfriends .Undeterred we carried on each week ,even taking our import records down for the DJ to play each week .As we started travelling further afield ,we and more friends honed our style after watching others at The Mecca ,Wigan Casino ,Treetops Club Coventry etc .I still get locals mentioning and remembering our dancing in the early 70’s ,and how they hated us ,ha ha .
  21. Extremely sad news ,as everyone has said,Paul was a real gentleman and a great record collector and DJ .I didn’t know him as well as many ,but it was only a short while ago that I spent some time chatting to him at Carib Soul in London .Thinking of his lovely wife Helen ,and his many friends x
  22. I bought Dan Folger blind in Seattle 1980 after reading an Ian Levine chart of slow records in Frank Elson’s column .I think Randy Cozens championed it too
  23. I think John Manship discovered Larry Clinton ,covered up as Eddie Seaburg
  24. Rob Marriott taped it for me ,and tipped me off when copies appeared on the front page of Soul Bowl for £6 about 1980 . I actually reviewed it in Rod Dearlove’s Midnight Express Fanzine in the early 80’s .My copy ended up with Mark Wilson in Scotland
