  2. Marina started in the late 6ts & continued into the early 7ts, then renamed the Sound Barrier. Gary Todd also did several Allnighters there in the late 8ts early 9ts, great Nighter, highly illegal, but ignored by the local authorities as they were to busy breaking up ilegal Raves in the county side lol. Best Russ
  3. Shifty DJ'd at least a couple of times & he was playing stuff like Phonetics 'Just a Boys Dream' which had yet to take off properly again, I thought this n others were very special ......Johnny Rogers was bought from John yes, but came from Nigels collection which John had recently bought when Nige sold up, I dont think JR had even played it..........there was some great stuff in that collection & I had quite a few of em.......... Others that graced the decks: Roger Banks Chris Dale Irish Greg Shay Tony Ellis Ian Clark Dave Abbott Ged Molly Matt from Trowbridge The Woons Gary Todd Ray Gillen Ben Summers LLoyd Attrill Jo Wallace There's loads more too, I might remember others later........ Best Russ
  4. Roger Banks was playing 'Cry Myself to Sleep' in NS rooms 15 years ago at least to critical aclaim. I have been playing out 'Giving Up My Heartaches' for some years too, an amazing LP, one of my all time faves & the 45 is a welcome bonus, as Sean says nice un loud !. Best Russ

Hy Lawson - Someone should buy this...........its bloody great & took me a long time to locate, covered up as Charlie Gracie & the Rythm Kings for years.............you'll be kickin ya selfs when it gets the wider exposure it deserves, went down a storm at the Soul in the South Nighter 2 week ends ago with looks at the decks etc........mines still covered up cos I cant be arsed to take the c/up label off & that price is a bargain.......... Best Russ
  8. The voice of reason............the NS Scene has always cherry picked from every genre of black music & beyond, funk has been played on the scene for decades, its no biggie if its any good & has the NS X factor it'll work, if it doesnt it wont.........its not armageddon ! Best Russ
  9. Ronnie West covered up by Dean as the 'Soulfay'..........great tune !. Russ
  10. I went to a lot of Jazz Funk mid week do's darn south, in particular the Black Velvet events in & around the South Coast, did the JF stuff in the week & then travelled Northwards at the weekends, during the 8ts did all the Rare Groove stuff mid week too.......think it added to my soulful eveolution & my eclectic tastes in Northern & Rare Soul, still on the Northern scene, always will be, but hopefully appreciate lots of other black dance music too............ Best Russ

  13. Whilst I love my mid tempo, 2 Steppers, Beat Ballads & Down Tempo Soul as much as the next Northern Soul fan ( ), seriously tho' I do.....................could you put up with enjoy an entire night of it in one lump, in a, presumeably club/pub type setting ???............Sunny Sunday afternoons chillin' out on the terrace of a wine bar or winter Sunday afternoons in the pub with a roaring fire or summat, or as at Essence (& the Uptown Down South Nighters as used to be) as a seperate room to a dance venue maybe or even on the radio, but one room of it all night........ Your thoughts ................ Russ

  17. Pretty sure this was a copy of the master tape, in fact I think there were two tapes, so strictly speaking whoever bought this doesnt automatically gain the rights to legally release it, unless they go through the usual channels. Best Russ
  18. Just when you think all the 'great' traditional NS Dancers may have been found ............this turns up & alongside other recent discoveries like The Royal Imperials & some of the funky thangs gaining needle time & exceptance on dancefloors it gladdens my heart to think that after all these years folk are still digging for the tunes & the dancers are still dancing to em..........this is what a propper NS scene should be about................ . Anyhoo wheres my copy then.........anyone ??? Russ
  19. Still hoping someone might take pity on me.......... Best Russ

I used to go to both Bretby & Wilton & enjoyed both, I was also very flattered to have DJ'd at both, but as I was travelling from the South, Bretby would be the easier option sometimes, especially as this was before I could drive. The Modern & Crossover Rooms were exceptional, CK did play some thrashed oldies in the Main Room sometimes, but this was more than made up for by the likes of Dave Thorley & others. There were definitly records which were played at Bretby Nighters as newies, I'm thinking unissued Arthur Prysock for starters, which was a f*cking anthem...........think Bad Weather was Bretby & maybe the unissued Carol Anderson & a great resuscitated oldie Willie & the Mighty Magnificents - Check It Baby.........etc Best Russ
