  1. We all have our favourite tunes within the latin genre which have that certain 'something' for us. I think that the large sums paid for the big tunes, Bobby Valentin, Harvey Averne etc.are a result of djs and collectors within the soul scene trying to find tunes within the latin genre that tick the ' soul ' box.A lifetime obsession with soul and the search for that special record, in particular a 'white label demo ' can easily become a trophy sound. Personally I find very little 'soul ' in many of the latin tracks which have been played over the years on 45, they are great dance tracks. Coming more from the jazz end of town I collect both albums and 45s and have had the privelege over 30 years of djing to play both formats. To this end I have no problem playing album tracks,as Luiz above recommends, however this is often frowned upon by 'the scene'.I am sure that many collectors have great latin albums in their collections with soulful tracks, Ray Terrace 'Listen to Me ', being a personal favourite. Ultimately, the consequence is that prices go up for the fair to middling 45s within a relatively small genre and an element of the emperors new clothes will exist. Find the records, play them out, whether Lp or 45, let the dancefloor enjoy. You can also sit at home listen to what the f*ck you want and bask in the joy of having such impeccable taste. We all got Latin Soul. Nick.
  2. All back to mine after Sub Club,Glasgow in the nineties and decided to change the music on the decks from house to soul. Kneeling on the floor djing for another few hours surrounded by sevens, rather the worse for wear and knelt on ,and cracked Tony Middleton 'Return to Spanish Harlem ' and Jimmy Reed Jnr 'I Aint Goin Nowhere '. The Jimmy Reed still plays with a quiet click all the way through but the Tony Middleton click is murderous. Every now and then I try it again thinking that it wont be so bad ,it is. Nick.
  3. I suppose we are all entitled to our opinion. In my opinion 'Pete's Madness' from the 'I Like it Like That 'album is an outstanding piece of latin jazz. Do yourself a favour and check it out. Nick.
  4. Pete . Pete I am unable to download these podcasts at work as they are blocked by our Websense filter, however I intend to at home. I am sure that you need no reassurance re. the quality of your work in putting together your podcasts, but if this helps....great. Last friday 15 of us went out to celebrate my mate Bruce's 50th in Glasgow, ending up at ' Friday St' for a great night of northern, mod tunes. As part of his birthday present I gave him a cd of 5 of your podcasts. To a guy without a computer it was like manna from heaven for him who is used to buying cd's to feed his habit, over 150 new tracks to listen to and absorb. Personally I listen to the podcasts constantly in my car and have ,only this morning ordered 2 tracks, which will slot into my set perfectly, from one of the podcasts. As a dj of some 30 years playing the full gamut of 'black music' your work has been a refreshing and educational addition to my musical knowledge. Keep up the good work and dont let the bastards grind you down. nick.

Hi I got one of the very bags last time you mentioned them and use it every week for my sevens. Possibly one of the best buys ever ! Nick.

Hi When I was in Rio after finding one shop I used the 'snowball' effect for finding the next one. Show your map to the assistant, tell him what you are after musically, get them to dot the location. I ended up in quite a few weird and wonderful locations to say the least. I would advise to do your digging during the day, some parts of Rio,at night, become a bit more weird than wonderful. Galerias are usually a good bet also. Good luck , both cities are amazing, just make sure that you keep your wits about you. Nick.
  7. Indeed it is Mr O'Conner, I am very well and follow your posts on SS with great interest. Good to see that you are still promoting the power of the'mid tempo' monster. I will never forget the sun streaming through the roof at Allanton, your good self on the decks and the metaphorical razor at my wrists. On a more relevant topic, check out Amarone, brilliant Italian downstairs on corner of Buchanan Street and Nelson Mandela Square. If sunny sit outside and people watch, as Jock says the variety of 'characters' passing will certainly give you plenty to talk about.
  8. Hi Mixed Up records in Otago Street, Glasgow's west End is probably the best of the few 2nd hand shops left. Check Stravaigin round the corner for top food in Gibson Street. From here Kilvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is 5 mins walk through park and Byres Road, good for studenty/west endy bars ,restaurants, vintage shops. The new museum of transport has also just opened at the riverside and is getting good reviews. There is always the city hop on/off bus departing from George Square which is probably your best bet for seeing the city in a few days. I wouldn't hold out much hope of picking up that exclusive tune, too many people looking for the same stuff, but I am sure that you will enjoy the city, especially if the weather stays good. Nick.

Hi I am sure that we all have the dreams where we not only find that elusive record, but actually design the shop and somewhat farmiliar location of said shop. I awoke a couple of mornings ago pleased as punch at picking up approx. 30 rare ethiopian jazz albums. Not only had I designed all of the covers for records that only exist in my imagination but the mysterious owner lurking in the back shop promised me exclusive access to the new stock which arrived daily. Sweet dreams Nick.
  12. Hi I hate to introduce an air of morbidity to this thread but...... what happens to all of these records when the Djs go to the big allnighter in the sky /
  13. Hi As a matter of interest, what is the programme that you use for your ' blends' ? Cheers Nick.
  14. How could anyone possibly not sign this petition. Respect.
  15. Sorted now Thanks Nick.
  16. Hi I'm looking for a copy of the reissue for djing to an uninformed crowd who will just love the tune. I await in anticipation, Nick. Cajun Hart - Got to Find a Way.
  17. Hi The documentary ' Machito - A Latin Jazz Legacy ' may be the programme that you are referring to. I still have it on VHS , are there copyright restrictions, or do you think that I can upload it onto the sight.? I am sure that a lot of Soul Sourcers would appreciate seeing the masters in full flow. The footage of the dancers from The Palladium is awesome and an there is an amazing street party in new York with Ray Baretto, Dizzy, Candido and Machito himself, like an old Grandfather type, respected by all of the local community. Yours Nick.

    pm'd you. Nick.
  20. I've never been the most careful with my records, changing my mind at the last minute, not only with tunes but with genres. However the worst I ever saw was my Dj partner at a Soul to Soul gig in the nineties so out of the game that I had to clear up his records at the end of the night. God knows how he didnt notice, there were 7 records stuffed into one sleeve sticking out of his box forming a vinyl fan! The rest of his set was spread over the booth where they had been dropped, fallen and generally discarded. The irony of the situation was that from the dancefloor everything sounded fine. Nick.
  21. Hi SS Here are 3 tunes from my set last Saturday at 'The Buff Club' Glasgow. Had to play 'Dee Edwards - Why Cant There Be Love' as a tribute to Hermon Weems Freddy Scott 'I'll be Gone' - going down a storm on the floor esp. the drum breaks towards the end. Mr Floods Party 'Compared to What' -also becoming a bit of an anthem over the last few weeks. Thanks to KevH and Steve Plumb for supplying the last two to me. Cheers Nick.
  22. Little Sonny 'The Creeper Returns' Top title for an amazing production. No refo so :

Hi Alan I finally got a copy of ' Hey its Love' for $8 a few weeks ago having been introduced to it by your good self. It was one of these dodgy graded well above the actual condition singles, ie totally fucked ! Surprisingly it actually plays pretty well. Getting Carmen into her soul music, who said that 3 months was too young. Nick
  24. I play it every Saturday night in Glasgow. The crowd go totally wild. Nick.
