  1. Yes I thought the Tams might have beaten it, but it charted six months after Frankie
  2. Bumped into an old friend I hadn't seen for years last week who was around in the late 60s/early 70s and I was telling him about todays scene and how Weekenders had become so popular and that live acts were a big part of them and we got onto who we wished we had seen in their hey day. His was Frankie Valli / 4 Seasons who are still a favourite of his today and whilst he had seen them performing their more commercial stuff wondered what it would be like to see them perfoming their Northern songs and I admitted to having a soft spot for "You're Ready Now" because it reminds me of my youth club days and he asked if I was aware that it was the first legally UK reissued song for the Northern scene. He explained that after it started to get plays in the 60s the original UK issue had proved hard to get hold of and that the mod/soul crowd of that time lobbied the record label for at least a couple of years to reissue it and then out of the blue in late 1970 they heard from a DJ at the Wheel that the record company had linked these requests to the term "Northern Soul" which had come into popular use only months earlier and realised there was money to made. It was reissued in time for Xmas 1970 (bigger sales market) and that so many of the mods/soul boys preordered the record that it went straight into the the top 30 as a new entry, but Philips hadn't done any marketing and the radio weren't playing it so sales plummeted for a couple of weeks and it almost dropped out of the top 50. Philips then got their act together and did a feature on it in various music papers and the radio stations then started to play it and it went zooming up the charts eventually becoming Frankies first ever top ten hit in the UK in early 71. So was it really the first legally reissued song specifically for the scene? Even if it wasn't its a great story
  3. From the Pop era of 77/8 this one has remained in the box to this day and everytime I play it it makes me smile (sorry)
  4. Was a massive Yate record, I think Clarkie discovered it or at least played it first, seem to remember it got booted as well.
  5. Mark, I haven't forgotten this, his tape was a C120 and despite precautions it got chewed up so I need to repair it before I check...
  6. Mark, Is Dancin on the same tape as the Honey Cone track from 78 that we finally sorted a few years back? If so I have just got some tapes from a friend who also taped that night and if I remember correctly my tape only had a short snippit, as he was taping next to me there is a good chance there will be more. If it is the same tape let me know and I'll check it out tomorrow.
  7. Pretty sure its Pamela Stanley - That'll Be The Day
  8. You may already have checked this, but there are hundreds of live clips going back at least 5 years of lots of Soul nites on a youtube channel called Juds Northern Soul. If you know which venues she was still attending you can search in his channel by the event name or location and maybe find her dancing on them. Good luck and sorry to hear sad news.
  9. Long overdue, but here it is Alan Rhodes last DJ at Wigan, last record of Richard Searling spot leading into it. https://www.mixcloud.com/stevecarter161214/wigan-casino-alan-rhodes-last-ever-dj-appearance-8th-july-1979/
  10. As promised before I post it to mixcloud this week, here are the records Alan spun in his last spot 7-8th July 1979 together with Russ & Richards spots to give you a flavour of the night/era. Is worth noting that Richard was particuarly vocal on the mic with several yells of boogie and other comments (including a good windup about Cecil Washington being the Orchids on Kool Kat), not something you'd usually hear from him and the story went that it was because he was upset with Alan moving on and there was a lot of talk of did he jump or was he pushed, maybe someone on here knows the true story? Whats also interesting is that after the handover from Richard, Alan calls him his partner in crime and dedicates a record to him sayng "This is for Richard from myself to Sep 1980 and theres a joke there somewhere" and this coupled with the endless rumours about the Casino closing led may of us to think Alan had given a heads up on the actual date, of course it went onto 1981, but it made us wonder at the time. As you will hear, he got a great send off from the crowd so was clearly a popular DJ. Will update once I have uploaded to Mixcloud. Cheers
  11. I can't tell you specifics, but one of the older guys in our group said he had been around for a long time and was resident in a York venue, hopefully someone knows a bit more. As you'll hear when I upload the tape, he says he had been five years at Casino, so as he left in 79, presumably he joined in 74 sometime, maybe part time initially as there seemed to be a lot more irregulars early on Cheers
  12. Well clearly I didn't get this done, but with all the free time we have currently I have found the tapes, also has Richard Searlings spot before Alans and there are some interesting comments from Alan during the handover. I'll post the playlists up tomorrow and stick them on Mixcloud once I find my audio leads! Cheers Steve
  13. I seem to remember we had something like this on the old KTF site, of course that was probably getting on for 20 years ago so I could be wrong:-)
  14. Percy doing his thing in 2017!
  15. Found this whilst looking for info on the Broadways and couldn't see it anywhere on the site, so enjoy them performing a classic.
  16. Still remember when Black Echoes reviewed it and that week George Clinton was the guest reviewer and said he liked it and the BE Staff felt the need to insert a paragraph stating they had to explain to him who made it and where it was aimed, but even then he gave it a thumbs up!
  17. Hi, There were 2 versions going around of the record in the RS spot - Peter Jarett Run Run, Baby Run on MGM and Tommy James on Roulette, think RS played PJ version and the instumental is Libra - Appollo 11 on Ranwood, no idea what the other is, no doubt Mark Freeman will know! Cheers
  18. Yes the Legends was one of his and no I forgot all about it, joys of getting old, will try and sort this week
  19. I might have mentioned this before, but I have his last Dj spot at Wigan on tape which I keep meaning to put on mixcloud, will see what I can do this week, definately underated imo. Cheers
  20. How did the Greater Experience go down Barry, one of my favourites but I managed to clear the floor with it at our old Cagneys nights, hopefully you'll play it at New Forest in July!

  22. Maxine on Trindad and Tobago National, anyone know if any of her other Wand items came out over there?
  23. Forgot I had this 45, Jackie Trent You Baby / Send her Away on NZ Pye!
  24. Yes the shop was on the outskirts of Zurich, but both owners were Swiss, they had lots of Northern there and I picked up about 50 45s from them but Roy Roberts stood out and I actually scanned it and put a sound file up on my website which must have been late 90s. I have a vague recollection of trading it for Rivage "Strung Out" but its a long time ago, I think it had a slight warp if thats any help, but equally it may have been Marc, the joy of time eroding memory!
