Most copies of Jimmy Mack on Hamster are 2nd (legal) issues, 1st press is quite a hard one, there are a few differences between them on close inspection, the most obvious being the title ' A woman is SO hard to understand ' (2nd iss) / ' A woman is hard to understand ' (1st iss). Also the original issue label is more of an olive green, rather than the emerald green of the re-release. Price wise, 2nd prob around £15 (but often sold for more as originals), 1st issue £70 upwards ?

Which Dj's On The Northern Soul Scene Have Got The Balance Right
Hill868 replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Ginger taylor getting the balance just right ?? Give me a break, he is Mr.Predictable, playing the old tried, tested, and TIRED !! -

Just got a copy of the previously unreleased ' The panic is on ' by Lou Johnson, but it's on a yellow Big top label, no. 45-105, with ' What am i crying for ' on the flip, not the maroon Big top press with ' Unsatisfied ' on the other side, seen often on ebay. Anyone know why and how it's been pressed twice ?

The demo with title of ' It's against the RULES of love ' easily the rarest one, don't think there is much to choose between the demo's and issues of 'Against the laws of love ' originals, seen plenty of those one-sided demo's in my time - issues possibly just as rare / not rare (if you get my meaning) ! Still a classic northern Philly great.

77 Chas Diamond and Inspirations, sold one couple of months ago for £45, Soul Set (great semi-known) would have thought £25.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
Hill868 replied to Len's topic in All About the SOUL
Think you're probably right, unfortunately. I personally think there has always been a lot more oldies fans than those interested in new / rediscovered / newly found/ different sounds, even going back to the mid to late 70's, and it got progressively worse when the boys of 69-75 approx made their mid-life crisis comeback in the early to mid 90's ! I think that a scene that is now some 45 years old is rapidly running out of people who want to hear or dance to an unknown 1968 storming Philly obscurity, a fantastic little known 78 soulful west coast mover, or a slightly funky obscure 73 small label soul gem - we're getting older, little new blood is going to appear, and a lot of the punters going now all seem to want the older established / familiar / played out classics, just look at the number of oldies and motown nights up and down the country every weekend. I actually persuaded myself to attend the Spalding soul night at the Sugar Beet club last night, and it was everything i expected (worst case scenario realised several times over) !!! Example - after numerous overplayed things, i asked the next DJ to put on a couple of uptempo 70's, his response was to play 'Itching in my heart ' Supremes, and then another Motown 45 i'd only heard 986 times before. More comments please ! Jez. -
Which Northern Track You Dislike The Most
Hill868 replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in All About the SOUL
Always hated the Shakers ' One wonderful moment ' = bloody awful, and played to death multiple times at Cleethorpes, Peterborough, etc in the late 70's, also always disliked Terrible Tom, Nolan Porter ' Only be sure ', Benzine ' Village of tears ' . - could probably compile a list as long as an arm if i had the time and inclination !! -
Got a copy of the 7 Dwarfs ' Stop girl ' on IDEAL 168 i've always assumed as a boot, now seem to think it could be a proper one, due to the info on Manship's current auction site - has the 1168 with oddly scratched 8 in the run-out, any more info greatly appreciated. By the way, don't actually like this record much, heavy stomping US garage psyche that was popular for a while at Notts. Palais around 1977 ! Jez.

Had a few soul packs in the 79's / early 80's, best thing i've kept from a pack from back then is Rhonda Davis on Duke, probably got rid of some slower things that would not have been in vogue then (but would a few years later).

Has anyone ever correctly fixed a warped 45, i've read several variations on the betwwen 2 panes of heated glass technique, but has anyone done this to any great level of success ??
-
I think that most people who have a number of bootlegs have aquired them because they would never have the cash to purchase an original, or even have the inclination to track one down, they just wanted the 45 on vinyl to play. I probably have some 30 odd boots from the 70's, such as George Blackwell, Salvadors, etc, but didn't actually buy any when they first appeared, just got given them / acquired them over the years, with no intention of ever denying the artists any sort of royalties. I wonder how many of the rare items that have been supposedly legally reissued over the last few years have led to the original artists receiving any payments or royalties, perhaps with the exception of some of the Kent things ?!

Songs That Use Same Arrangement /backing Track
Hill868 replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in Look At Your Box
Jesse James on Shirley records - fantastic, rare, and very expensive, virtually same backing track as the Impressions (also done by lead vocalist Jerry Butler solo on Vee-Jay). -
Surely got to have the 2 great Garland Green Revue 45's in there = Ain't that good enough and Girl I love you, could compile a list of hundreds, if you're including slower soulful northern tracks, plus earlt to mid-seventies soul items. Plus nobody mentioned what I've always considered one of the greatest things ever commited to vinyl, the immense ' BYGONES ' by Bull on Bell !!

HAVE A NICE COPY OF THE EBONY'S PHILLY NORTHERN RARITY ' I CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE YOU ' / ' BACK IN MY ARMS ' on US AVIS 1001 (Excellent) - WOULD BE WILLING TO SELL IF DECENT OFFER RECEIVED. WOULD PREFER PAYMENT BY PAYPAL AS A GIFT IF POSSIBLE. Jez, Spalding, S. Lincs.

Hello, never heard the Jesse James on Match - any good ? thanks, Jez.
-
Just been sorting out a load of 45's for clearance / car boots, etc, seem to have 2 copies of ' CUT YOUR MOTOR OFF' by BLACK NASTY feat HERBIE THOMPSON. Both look to be proper US originals, but titles and scripts in different styles, and the address of label 18307 James Couzens Detroit is near the top of one, and the bottom of the other 45. Any ideas ?? Thanks, Jez.

The abbreviation M.V.P. means the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER - a sporting term used in major US sports events such as the Superbowl, indicating the man of the match (and worth the most millions of dollars) !!
