Backstreet Boutique, The Talk, Norwich - Saturday 28/2/15
Thanks for your feedback Chas. The event was aimed at complimenting Mark's regular events in the Main Hall at The Talk in Norwich featuring mainly classic and quality NS oldies and so the emphasis was to cover records which don't get played so often. I actually agreed a trade for the Bobby Foster track with one of the other dj's a couple of weeks ago and he turned up with it on the night about 5 mins before I was due to go on. It had apparently come from Soul Bowl and been in his collection since 74 and hadn't been played since, so job done on that one at least .

Derek Martin in 2015 - Available
Liked his showcase appearance at the 100 Club all nighter when he sang along to backing tracks (Sly Girl included) . Worked well I thought and similar occasional showcases would be nice in future.

The Wall Of Sound - Studio Tapes
In the middle of reading Little Symphonies - A Phil Spector Reader - edited by Kingsley Abbott. A good yarn and will have a listen to some of the clips above to compliment the book. This joke attributed to Spector made me laugh " Albert Einstein invented the bomb, nuclear fission, the theory of relativity and you look at every picture of him, the man couldn't invent a hair conditioner!".

Big Star's albums #1 Record and Radio City have to be two of the best sounding records ever made. RIP John Fry.

What's Your Favourite Funk 45
I bought this recently - Jimmie Ellis - I Gotta See My Baby. Its the flip of Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love. Loose and a bit unhinged but all tied together with some great backing vocals and horns.

What's Your Favourite Funk 45
Hearing the Soul Swingers had me going up to the loft to find the cassette with it on which I bought off a stall on Portobello Road Market in the 90's. My tape deck expired years ago so haven't heard the Soul Swingers in ages. Lots of other v. good stuff on it - many on YouTube if anyone wants to check any of them out. No Sly & The Family Stone yet? - Running Away a personal fave.

Dr John
Have you watched any of the foo fighters sonic highways on the iplayer? The New Orleans episode features some good Dr John interviews/music plus Alan Toussaint, Neville Bros., Meters. Don't like the foo fighters really but the whole series is good if you like music documentaries and Americana.

Northern Soul Article
Not a bad read. These comments contradict each other though? :- According to DJ Andy Smith – who DJed with Portishead in the 1990s – the reason Northern soul is having a resurgence is because of the “backlash” against “computer-made music”. What people are starting to look for, says Andy, is the kind of quality you get in a Northern soul song, tied in with the rarity of the production. But it’s not just a nostalgia thing, insists Elaine Constantine, who lives in London and regularly goes to the monthly Northern soul do at the capital’s 100 Club. “Look at that Pharrell Williams tune ‘Happy’,” she says. “The success of that shows there’s still a thirst for this kind of music. That’s basically four beats to the bar with an uplifting, positive vocal. It’s a tune you can properly dance to.” Don't really get the " tune you can dance to properly" quote. Seen people dance properly to Nirvana's - Teen Spirit - that's 4 beats to the bar too but no uplifting vocal!

Venues Value For Money
Can't agree that free entry do's are no good. The best soul nights IMO in London when I moved from there July last year are/were all free 99p Soul, Majestic Soul, Soul Syndicate, Masters Of Soul, Downtown Soul. Edit forgot - Filthy Soul - got a feeling there were a couple of others but forgotten the names.

Country Ain't Got No Soul
White Line Fever - Merle Haggard - great song about driving trucks and taking drugs. Superb combination. His Workingman Blues is a good one too.
