Well, I picked my pink issue copy 15 years ago or so for 50p in Ostend (Belgium). When I was proposed an original demo a little while after, I couldn't care to replace my "cheap-prized" pink copy and so I passed over it. Only recently I had a chance to secure a promo copy on a trade and when I dropped the needle... the sound of it just blew me away. I never was convinced by the whole mastering behind the official pink release and this is not a question of vinyl versus styrene I believe. My searches took me to few discussions on here about the date for the pink release. It seems to have been two years after the first promo release (december 1973). It was re-released with no promo stage to promote it since it was made mainly to supply a specific UK demand/market. Subsequently it would find it's way into sales boxes as an "import". That qualifies as a reissue to me. About the lo-fi quality sound of the pink release; could it be that they didn't had the tapes anymore to re-release it and it was just dubbed from a promo copy ? If not, why such a gap in sound quality there ?

Kenny Wells - New Voice - 70's Boot
Tlscapital replied to Billy Jo Jim Bob's topic in Look At Your Box
Too good to be booted IMHO ! -
Don't think the promo (even though rarer) would attract more anyon or even affect it's street price value that is £200 & + if condition is sparkling !

It's Greek and had at least another Gamble release; the Frank Beverly 'if that's what you wanted'. Better looking in full gear with the company sleeve. They were freebees distributed to customers in gas stations I believe/understood.

Question About Three Degrees - Contact Promo 45
Tlscapital replied to Britmusicsoulfan's topic in Look At Your Box
Don't have the boot to compare matrix but they should be the same on both I believe and indeed if the edge of the vinyl is sharp and smooth, it's the real thing. If it's flat and rough, it's the boot ! -
The shipping fees are calculated from your whereabout to the buyer destination and processed (charged) through their "controls" and the VAT "duties" guys are also there. No actual extra charges for the sellers as such, only for the buyers. Big Brother continued intrusion in the transactions between private as professional sellers/dealers and buyers. If Evil bay would impose that channel/program as the payments through Paypal only, they'd control it all ! That'd be scary ! And I wouldn't accept that from them as a seller. I'd go the same old way. And as a buyer I do ask sometimes if the buyer agrees not to send my parcel through that channel.

Solomon King - This Beautiful Day Query
Tlscapital replied to Northern Soul Uk's topic in Look At Your Box
Not a boot I believe pressed by Federal records (West Indies) and contemporary to it's UK original release. Those Federal releases were made for the whole Caribean (and other isolated destinations) market so I'm guessing that a first run of 50/100 pressings to test the demand could be a probable number. They did a lot of very small runs of 45s that never met any demand. But when a certain tune got popular they repressed as many runs necessary to meet the demand while it is still there (weeks, months, years…) and that explains why some Jamaican presses are so rare no matter what condition and some others are not. -

Walter Wilson On Ebay......jamaican Wand Promo ! Amazing
Tlscapital replied to Hammie's topic in Look At Your Box
Rarer than good IMHO, but 6K !? On those Jamaican Federal releases it says "under license" so I guess were they really. Caribean Radios were fueled with USA's 45, so those were most likely aiming for the retail. One could hardly imagine that this would have been huge anywhere and so must have remained there... Those Federal releases were made for the whole Caribean (and other isolated destinations) market so I'm guessing that a first run of 50/100 pressings to test the demand could be a probable number. I'd bet that this particular 45 is rarer than it's american counterpart. And it's vinyl !!! -

I've had it in the past from NOS stocks next to OVO's and they are kosher in my eyes. They are indeed old runs of label from a certain pressing plant (this blue/silver fromTennessee maybe ?) and since it was a hit record, it's more than normal that they were pressed here and there & on and on. And like the link provided by Dave Turner here above points; CHESS 1841 through 1950 (1963—1966): Black label, however there are many pressing plant variations. Some 1800 series issues exist on blue and silver, others on multi-color Chess labels.

Andre Williams - Do It - Wingate & Porgy&monarchs On Verve
Tlscapital replied to robhallam's topic in Record Wants
Verve (approx) count (collectorsfrenzy) 1 to 20 Sylves Chess stock, Sylves local 3 to 20, Sylves Chess promo 5 to 20. I'd priced them accordingly... -

JM's guide goes both ways sometimes (too high & too low) and is not nerdy enough to consider the desirability (even by few hardcore maniacs) of small differences/details in great but overlooked records by established "hipster" DJ's or collectors. I don't have JM's guide, so £20 for the Verve !? How much does he rate the 3 Sylves differently if he does them individually £5, £10 & £15 ? -
Andre Williams - Do It - Wingate & Porgy&monarchs On Verve
Tlscapital replied to robhallam's topic in Record Wants
Hi Rob, well that I did not know and it's true (seen it on Google) !!! I love my Sylves promo and I never keep twice the same record. I'd be in a daze if I would lay my hand on that Verve promo (most likely did not made it to the stock stage...) as to wich one to keep. There must be a story behind that Verve record. Same production (maybe session) as for the 'love chain' one. But 'that's my girl' on Sylves must have been a good seller. The promos are rarer than the issues and a lot surfing up are worned out ! The promos Chess distributed have that "wall paper" shadowed promotional copy - not for sale shadowed patern that Chess used until early 1967. So the Sylves shouldn't be much behind mid 1967. While Porgy 'love chain' Verve (april 1968) is prior to 'that's my girl' on Verve that puts it around mid 1968 !!! I thought I had it all made in my head with my Porgy & the Monarchs record collection, but not. This is exiting ! Cheers -

'i've Been Taken For A Ride' Saints, Bobby St James & Uptones
Tlscapital replied to Tlscapital's topic in Look At Your Box
I forgot that Stardom one wich leaves even another clue; This one pop-up less than the other issues. Thanks Ady for thickening the mystery ! It doesn't give much info on the label but it has an address. It doesn't show the credits for Miles Grayson like on the Kent one but it bears the same full title 'I've been taken for a ride' like the Saints on Kent & Bobby St James on Watts instead of the Uptones on Watts where both W-901 & 1080 have just 'taken for a ride'. Anybody know how does that 'wear my ring' on Watts sounds like ? Is it the same take as on Magnum (early sounding) ? Or a later cut ? Since I've understand that the 'taken for a ride' is the same and if so do sounds past early 1966 !!! If the Uptones 'wear my ring' is the same as on Magnum and 'taken for a ride' same as the Saints or Bobby St James, then the Uptones on Watts is a split and later release. And if Bobby St James was the leader singer for the Saints who were ex(s) from the Uptones, then there might be a story after the recording sessions or releases and somebody did another business with it ??? And some more... They might not be related to the 'I'll let you slide' Saints on Wigwam but would be to two of them on Revue with 'mirror mirror on the wall'... -
'i've Been Taken For A Ride' Saints, Bobby St James & Uptones
Tlscapital replied to Tlscapital's topic in Look At Your Box
OK Robb, maybe the Uptones on Magnum (1963-4) is second to the Watts, but as we know smaller doesn't mean first. Especially when it comes to co-owners of the songs having their own labels and wish to extend a song's lifespan. Plus Magnum had also more than a few releases that had no other prior releases. But then the Uptones 'wear my ring' B/W 'taken for a ride' on Watts W-1080 should plays another/earlier tune for the 'taken for a ride' side than on Watts W-901 ! Can anyone out there confirm that ? Because if it plays the same 'taken for a ride', thenWatts W-1080 is not a pre 1967 release ! Doing some more quests, I looked closer to this label version to discover it's actually another press. The press on Watts by Bobby St James shown on opening topic is from the same pressing plant as the Kent one. This one doesn't have a full address anymore like for the Uptones. The typos/fonts used on this one below are early to mid 7T's and this could suggest that the label owner was still releasing it later cashing in on some local demand or something... The devil hides in the detail; this one puts 'I've been taken for a ride' as an AA side ! Wich is really no clue as such ! But then both sides must have had air play . I find the Bobby St James on Watts very attractive and I love to collect everything that is good to my ears from that iconic Kent label. Kent who did indeed lease few records from other labels. But am also weary at times of established statements claiming "first/local" mainly because of the rarer and smaller label. And then dealers pushing up the price. In this case I'm not suggesting one way or the other, I just really wonder and would like to know not just believe. -
Such a classic and cool record, the Bobby St James on Watts is often credited to be the first issue, but it doesn't credit the Miles Grayson arrangements unlike the Kent release. It could be a later release as well as the first one. I've never actually heard the Bobby St James to compare if it's the same take and timing (even though the 3 show different timing) as the Kent one (that I have). Can anybody point what release came out first, second and third with facts/proofs and not beliefs/theories please. Thanks Baring in mind that the Uptones had two catalogue number releases on Watts as W-901 & W-1080 and that the 'wear my ring' was previously release on Magnum; so we can deduce that this Watts 45 is a split/later release. So the Uptones would be last in line.

If it does exist, I've never seen one. Pressing plants regardless of promos and/or issues at some pressing plants then others with such and/or such logo/design seems to go all over the place with the Fame firsts 10 releases or so. If there's no flat design logo on styrene promo is there an original red stock vinyl with the "sparkle" logo ?

Sadly, yes it's that Kent 45. I always loved & defended the Kent LPs even though I never collected them as such. Off course the Kent Anniversaries 45 are something out of this world. On the other hand I never had much appeal for their CD compilations of compilations and "best offs"... Anyway, through the decades Kent had to adapt and jump on "the bandwagon" to stay in the race I guess. That is commercially logical. And so IMHO such a "box of 45" look alike reissues selection from the Fame files is, sorry Ady, a bit dull I find. Even if some are raries and one previously unissued on wax. But to get one unissued bit on a 45 format, the box set makes it rather expensive and then the "split" of the set is rather unavoidable...
