I'm yet to have either copy in hand to compare them black & yellow copies side by side visually and sonically and point out differences. I can only judge from sound clips from tinternet and that source is only too vague if even reliable. Up to now, I've read only bits about the record like that it was previously unissued but was it really ? Does anyone out there have the story about the record and both black and yellow label issues. The black one sounds right (as it looks) where the yellow looks odd and sounds like it's been pitched down.

Record is graded Vg++ due to edge heat burn that is barely audible and visually only cause the slightest warp (NAP). It's actually a very Lo-Fi bootleg steal from the Ohio Players "budget" LP named '16 greatest hits' then on the double LP 'Superpak' both on Trip (label).

Both the "silver" (only/no white) imprint on blue paper label use the same label stamper on your example where only the logo design differs and as you pointed with the matrix they pressed in different pressing plants. So I doubt that one is really a first press. All (with few exception) the Constellation promotional copies then used the flat design. It was the "new" design. I guess that they had left overs of the old design pre-printed labels here and there and they were using the new as well as the old labels at the same time as in the different pressing plants. Most of the Constellation catalogue numbers from N°149 (mid 1964) to N°173 (late 1965) had both the star and flat label variation. Then you also have the 'Monarch' styrene pressings with the beautiful darker blue colored label with the real white logo and star sky.

Hi's and Lo's boots I hate them all ! Look-a-likes reissues do the same for me. Some say they are right because they are legit but it's only copyright to Sony Music most of the time for cheap money. Then they overflow the market... So the effort and the financial involvement for the "manufacturer" is rather worthless IMHO. As their products. Now in this day and age I'm not shocked to see reissues being bootlegged really. Some are now (it's been a little while though) collecting these old Grapevine reissues 45's. The bootleg by definition is made to fool the buyer and rip-off the originators. So if they were part of (the wrong side) of the scene once, they still can be in (still on the wrong side of) today's scene I should think.

Following the thread on the Class-Mates versus the Coronadas on Bright Star "sussing (himself actually)" on (his) Johnny Moore's small hit 'sold on you', here is the lesser known but well worth it double sider from THE MAN. 'A' side is a wonderful deep-swinger tune using the same backing track of his 'let's get it together' on Larry-O but bringing a totally different tune on it with extra strings to great effect IMHO. And the 'B' side is flanked with a totally worthy 6T's dancer that I understand is getting some spins on the Northern Front... Hi J., just for the sport I would have put up a photo/scan of said record for sale. Good price still. For the info, my copy looks vg++ and the flip side 'your love is all the help I need' which I love also, indeed crackles some too. I believe it's more to do with a mastering issue. As are many of those Miami typical recording sessions full of highs saturation... their trade mark maybe... LOL

Hi Paul, I don't think it's another "mix" but rather a re-mastering work for the pressing plant. In your case the Pennsylvania pressing plant (see the PL extension on the matrix). I had the Class-Mates then got the Coronadas on the SP pressing (Speciality pressing plant). These two are very-very close sound-wise. Where the PL and the Monarchs pressings, also going through their own mastering phase to do their pressing accordingly, tend to sound rather different I agree. The PL are harsher and the Monarchs deeper and the SP smoother.
