Jimmy Norman R.i.p.
Looks like a few passed away lately... Jimmy Norman died yesterday after a long illness and battle with his health. http://www.jimmynorman.org/ R.I.P. clip from above site Jimmy Norman, after a long illness, died on Nov. 8 in New York City. When he left the Coasters after 30 years of performing, Jimmy was in poor health for over a decade. However, during this period, he recorded Little Pieces in 2004 and The Way I See It earlier this year. Those two records, produced by Kerryn Tolhurst, were among Jimmy's best work. In addition to be a prolific performer, a great storyteller and a master musician, Jimmy was an old school songwriter from Nashville. He combined the best of soul and R&B, along with country and blues, and turned into a music of his own. He schooled a young Bob Marley, who at the time wanted to be an R&B singer, and was close friends with Jimi Hendrix... clip from wikipedia Jimmy Norman (August 12, 1937 - November 8, 2011) was an American rhythm and blues and jazz musician and a songwriter. In his early career, Norman had a charting single of his own, "I Don't Love You No More (I Don't Care About You)", as well as performing session work with Jimi Hendrix, but he is better known as a lyricist and songwriter. He wrote the lyrics of the song "Time Is on My Side", which became a hit for The Rolling Stones, and later in 1985 re recorded and produced by Stephen Vanderbilt featuring "St. Tropez" as the A side of a 45 released on the album "Home" throughout Europe. Norman composed a number of songs performed by well-known musicians including Johnny Nash and Bob Marley. In 1969 he became involved with doo-wop band The Coasters, first as a producer and then as a touring member. He was also recording independently, releasing a solo album in 1998, the same year poor health forced him to retire from performance. Like many other musicians of his time, he was not financially prepared for retirement or heavy medical bills, and with few royalties for his writing soon found himself in economic crisis. With the assistance of charitable organization Jazz Foundation of America, Norman regained his feet and resumed performing, releasing his first wide distribution album in 2004,Little Pieces. He performed in the Manhattan area until shortly before his death. more at http://en.wikipedia....ki/Jimmy_Norman

So Who Was Soul Brother Number 1?
So many wonderful artists, each and everyone different in their own way that make Soul music so rich and diverse and why we love it above anything else out there. Like you say it is all about opinions and that is why so many suggestions. As a single artist so many I could choose, Tommy Tate, Jackie Wislon, Marvin Gaye etc. James Brown never left the impression on me as others have done even though he has a great catalogue. As a group it would be the Temptations I think, 60's and early 70's with the classic line-ups although they have much more to offer. As a duo probably Eddie and Ernie.

Tornadoes On Magic Touch
I understand your argument and where you are coming from........ There are still records being discovered, just the quantity isn't there any more. There are plenty of forgotten and records ignored first time round, that is where I would look to before looking to the funkier stuff. Don't get me wrong if it has the right beat then all well and good, but if I wanted a funk record with a beat alien to the records I've been listening to all these years I'd go to a funk club. Feel Like A Fool just about acceptable, t'other side I dare say most dancers in a large venue would sit down. BUT as I said it would be boring if we all liked the same stuff and we would have nothing to talk about either

Fair doe's to anyone for trying anything but as you say too tricky to dance to IMO, the beat is all wrong for your average NS dancer. Think records of this ilk just highlight the lack of quality 60's dancers coming through, I mean records still turning up but not enough and DJ's etc having to look elsewhere. 8th Anniversary in February at the Stables...see you there?

Tornadoes On Magic Touch
It's been played a while but not a track I like, regardless who is playing, just can't see the appeal to the wider audience, especially dancers. It seems to me that it appeals to just a few and alienates too many. I see a lot of the funkier stuff clear the floor, not just at Lifeline but other venues too. Plenty of tracks from Lifeline DJ's I don't particularly like, would never say don't play them but thats not the point, just think with this it is a case of rarity over quality and fail to see what all the fuss is about. But each to his own, one man's meat, it would be boring if we all liked the same stuff etc etc..........

Tornadoes On Magic Touch
I'm sorry but if this is what the rare/northern seen has been reduced to in the name of progression then it really is in a sorry state (IMO of course). It might be very rare but a case of the Emperors New Clothes IMO. George got it right when he said it was dull.

So Who Was Soul Brother Number 1?
Just how long do they have to have recorded for to be considered? Surely it is about the catalogue.legacy and influence they have left behind or still have that counts towards an artists greatness not the length of his or her recording career ((although it does help). The Beatles didn't last much more than a decade bout are still influencing artists to this day, Elvis hasn't recorded and has been dead since the 70's yet still has a massive influence on music. It is the same of the artists we revere, the impression they have left on us as lovers of soul music that should be the sole factor, not the fact they haven't recorded for 20, 30 or 40 years? Most of the artists that can be and often are considered the greatest have done little or nothing since the 70's.

The Blues - Pbs
This new channel recently come to Sky (166) This series might be of interest to some of you... https://www.pbs.org/theblues/ The Blues¢Å¾¢ anchors a multi-media celebration that raises awareness of the blues and its contribution to American culture and music worldwide. Under the guiding vision of Executive Producer Martin Scorsese, seven directors will explore the blues through their own personal styles and perspectives. The films in the series are motivated by a central theme: how the blues evolved from parochial folk tunes to a universal language. It's started sowing but there may well be catch-ups repeats etc....

Tornadoes On Magic Touch
I'd agree with George, it's dull and can't for the life of me see the appeal to an all-nighter goer, not the type of record I want to hear.

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
I have a cd copy of a tape you did in I think 1985 Ion with Sandy Golden on it. I think you are right with the years Rob sold it to Richard. I can double check as the records were at Nick Stevenson's before they went and sure he said it was '91. Think there was 3 records in the deal in total.
