  1. A ban wouldn't be needed if DJ's used their imagination. It's like Pete said, there's no point him going out as he has a good idea of what he's going to hear as it's the same DJ's playing the same records week in week out A little imagination, drop a few records, try the odd different one now and again and things would improve no end. The era I grew up in most of the DJ's had their own identity and individual sets, they all comnpeted to play something different, that all changed with the returnees in the early 90's and not much has changed since IMHO. There's 100's of records ignored so a DJ can play the Ringleaders he paid £400 for or Ruby Andrews he paid £150 and many more besides Nowadays should be seeing the best of Northern Soul, the best records from the best part of 40 years yet it's far from it with little in the way of progression, forward thinking and least of all little imagination.
  2. Would it, not to me it wouldn't
  3. not that great I'm afraid.....maybe someone can post better quality
  4. Listening to the Dee & Joe on Jubilee I've got to agree with you John, can't hear a female in there. Will have to listen to soundfile of the Dee (D) & Joe on D-Town to fully confirm I suppose

  7. when is Danny on Mark? Started recording the show from sky as never up to listen
  8. I don't think we disagree that much Pete
  9. What's so funny, only the you and odd one or two who keep going on about not selling owt. I know others who are and doing pretty well out of it too. If it's that bad get a proper job
  10. Not for all dealers they aren't. I know plenty who are doing very well and at reasonable prices as well as what some might consider expensive.
  11. Teddy Pendergrass was the drummer when recruited in 1970, later to become lead singer. Harold Melvin was lead singer and founding member alongside Bernad Williams, Roosevelt Brodie, Jesse Gillis, Jr., and Franklin Peaker. Bernard Williams left to form a group called The Original Bluenotes who as we know recorded for Harthon and was also if memory serves me right the lead on the Victors "Hurt".
  12. the flyer Dave....
  13. is it an original you are giving away? anyway flip it over

If the history of the scene has shown us one thing it is the fact that ego's, conflict and self interest will always play it's part. There has always been rival promotions, with one promotion trying to undermime another or get the better of the other. If the scene was left in the hands of one small group to "run" the scene there is a danger of complacency, at least with a variety of venues promotors are kept on their toes and have to deliver or they fall by the wayside. You will never get total agreement between promoters with different ideas of how a night should be and the policy. There is still plenty of sh*t going on behind the scenes with some saying one thing in public but behaving the opposite in reality.....too many egos and too many with self interest as you put it. Also would a central venue catering for all work these days? The nighter crowd is slowly getting smaller and many have no wish to travel these days any great distance, many don't have to with nighter and soul night promotions all over the country. Most promoters are making an attempt to co-exist in some sort of harmony, the nighter planner on here for instance but clashes are bound to happen with very few dates and venues putting pressure on promoters to put an event on every month, I've still 3 dates to find for Ginger and Andy's Dusk Till Dawn promotion as Sheridans want a nighter a month, a clash of some sort will be inevitable unfortunately. Whilst I do think there are too many promotions the one thing we do have is choice, those that deliver the goods will prosper.
  15. has Rob Smith got one? Sure I've seen and heard him play it in the past
  16. You're right Simon, was lucky enought to watch rehearsals when Don first came over, Andy Dyson, Mick H and myself had dinner with Don and Lou Pride after and Andy showed Don a copy of Cheatin Kind, it was the first time he'd seen it and he said he didn't even know it had been released.
  17. Maybe promoters should get together, do away with flyers all together and publish a monthly gig guide? Maybe make better use of "On The Scene"? Is it still running? not seen one for a while?

Hi Simon, have seen each other couple of times since then, Stoke and Fleetwood two venues I'm not saying the original post was bad or your's was bad, just it makes you no better than those who made the posts slagging off larger venues playing popular well known records and I think you'll find I've defended Kev more than most on here. Like Dave says go where you want to go and hear who you want to hear. Why people have to publicly slag of other events, especially when they have know intention of attending puzzles me at times but I suppose it's the nature of us Brits, if someone puts themselves out there in the spotlight we just seem to love taking pot shots to knock them down This scene is too small and all this bitching and fighting between rival promoters and events will just drive people away in the end to the detriment of the scene.

There are still plenty of records out there either forgotten or already discovered but yet to have their day so to speak. If it wasn't for the so called second rate venues these records would never get a look in
  20. Chalky replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
I've yet to see you at venues like Lifeline so how can you give an opinion with regards to type of venue hard core soul nutters or whatever you call them frequent? Your counter opinion is just as bad as those that slag of the ones you are so called defending? As you don't frequent the type of venue hardcore soul nutters go to how do you know the music is second rate Some of your comments make you no better than some of the so called soul police. Like Dave Thorley says go to where you want to go, hear what you want to hear and let others get on with what they want to do and hear.
  21. they should be on a table on the way in/out. Maybe all promoters should think of doing it this way? Word of mouth does influence many but you have to get the info out there in the first place, that's why I believe the internet is far more benificial than flyers these days.

I've been saying for years that there are now too many venues and agree with too many chasing too few but how do you define quality?
  23. Chalky replied to jocko's topic in Record Wants
3 is out now, four will be next year. The new updated volumes are far more comprehensive with as much info in volumes one and two as there was in the first two volume set.
  24. Chalky replied to jocko's topic in Record Wants
Karen just bought me volumes 1 & 2 for my birthday, bloody great they are
