Pete Meaden - Jimmy James & The Vagabonds
An associate is in the process of writing a book on the London club scene of the 60's with a very heavy emphasis on the nascent 6T's London soul scene and I have been asked to post this on Soul Source. In particular, as much information as is possible is needed on two important figures, Pete Meaden & Jimmy James and the Vagabonds . Pete Meaden for those unaware was famously the man who first managed the Who but he was also one of the top "faces" on the original London mod scene. Soul music was his obsession. Some have said that Pete Meaden in his own way was as crucial in the acceptance of soul and RnB music in the UK at the time as other influential figures such as Dave Godin, Guy Stephens etc. After selling the Who's contract he put together Jimmy James & the Vagabonds. Meaden's philosophy on life and soul music was encapsulated on the sleevenotes to the Vagabond's first LP entitled The New Religion . Every soul fan should take the time to read those sleeve notes. Relatively little is known about Meaden save for some renewed interest in him when the mod revival hit in the late 70's. There was an interview with a UK music paper at that time but not long afterwards he died. Did any Soul Source members personally know or have contact with Meaden in the 60's ? Any photos, clippings or reminiscences of the man ? One wonders whether the late Randy Cozens would have known him ? Similarly with Jimmy James and the Vagabonds, did anyone see them live in their earliest incarnation in '65/66 ? Whenever the 6Ts London soul scene is mentioned, Geno Washington is the one who gets name checked but Jimmy James was equally popular with mods and soul fans. Your help would be most appreciated.

Run Like The Devil
Actually Bobby Vee's "Do What You Gotta Do" LP is one of the great blue eyed soul LP's from the sixties and his version of Let Nobody Love You is - if truth be told - in my opinion just a touch better than Virginia Blakely's rarity on Mojo. That will horrify the soul purists of course and may well inspire a rush of poison posts in this direction . His version wins out for the crystal clear production, arrangement and instrumentation. Information on session musos and background singers doesn't appear to be instantly available. If it was recorded in LA though it probably has Darlene Love and the Blossoms singing background and probably the usual West Coast muso suspects who played on so many soul classics ... He recorded two other also excellent LPs in '66 & '67 in a similar soul vein . Interesting thing is that in an interview he did many years later that he pretty much dismissed this period of his career as a blue eyed soul man ...

Dionne Warwick Tune
Well, it still got to number 10 on the US Billboard Soul charts in 1975, so it was by no means a "non hit".

Nice Bits 70s
Chris, I say this out of genuine curiousity - and with no negative aspersions at all on you - but I am wildly curious to know how much interest you ultimately get from people prepared to pay 70 quid for the boot of the Pages on Sunstruck ...

61.Harold Melvin-Reaching for the world- ABC E 8 62.Teddy Pendergrass-You must live on-PIR E+ 15 63.Teddy Pendergrass-Do me-PIR E+ 15 64.Teddy Pendergrass- Where did all the loving go-PIR E+ 15 (This guy can do no wrong in my book...4 awesome tunes) Chris, By the time of the fantastic "Reaching For The World" on ABC , Teddy Pendergrass had left the Blue Notes after his well publicised disagreement with Harold Melvin .... I believe his replacement David Ebo sang lead on "Reaching For The World" which was every bit as good a record as anything Teddy Pendergrass sang lead on. Ebo had as much vocal talent as Pendergrass and had circumstances been different he could have continued to carry the group at the top of the charts in the same way that Dennis Edwards did with the Temptations when he replaced David Ruffin. Pendergrass went on to solo stardom of course and the Blue Notes splintered into two groups - Harold Melvin put a new set of Blue Notes together and recorded for ABC Records (including Reaching For The World) as "Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes" while the others - who were original members from the 60's incarnation of the Blue Notes and who claimed they had as much right to the name "Blue Notes" as Harold Melvin - went off and recorded that great album on the Glades label out of Miami as just "The Blue Notes". There was much conjecture at the time in Blues and Soul and Black Music magazines as to who caused the big split and which member went where afterwards .... As one of soul music's greatest groups, there seems to be precious little biographical detail on Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - especially before they struck it big at Philadelphia International in 1971 - and it would be interesting to see a complete family tree and discography of the group from their inception in the late 50's through the 60's especially in light of the fact that Get Out on Landa and What Can A Man Do on Arctic are Northern soul classics. In fact does anyone know of any other 60's records by the group other than the abovementioned ones on Landa and Arctic and one (or more) on Uni ?

Game Players - Dooley Silverspoon
What a super dancer this was, and still is, but now apparently almost completely forgotten. Can anyone please provide a complete UK discography of his releases, both as Little Dooley and Dooley Silverspoon ? Indeed did any of his Little Dooley records get a release in the UK or Europe ?

45s Wanted
Yep , beige colour Aussie label RCA 7" (as with the Oz release of Midnight's "Keep Walking By"), actually the James Walsh was only ever a demo release Down Under , although the record itself looks like a normal RCA issue and does not have any indication that it's a promo; instead there is a black "promotional only release" stamp on the green and yellow paper RCA sleeve which is how the record company here was mailing out promos in the late 70's. I really must fix my scanner so I can post up pics of all these rare Oz and NZ releases for everyone on Soul Source... Incidentally, have I told you about the Oz 1970 A & M release of Billy Woods "Let Me Make You Happy" ????

Labi Siffre - What Is Soul ?
The eternal debate, isn't it ? Most of the 'pop' tracks and artists that people try to pass off as 'soul' ... well, the less said the better. But how about Labi Siffre ? Obviously not a "soul" man in the conventional sense, but he did possess a certain 'soulfulness' and there was a lot more to his recorded work than just "It Must Be Love". One of his other lesser known hits was "There's Nothing In the World Like Love". For something different, this could make a nice little ender at the end of a soul night, check out this great 7T's clip and tell us what what you think ?
