  1. Any memories of York Cats Whiskers - all dayers mid 70's I think? Some of my first northern nights there mid 80's, though it was called something else by then
  2. Brilliant at Prestatyn a few years back - such a distinctive voice, it was magical to hear him live. Sad news indeed
  3. Love her voice, cool as you like - great bit of film
  4. On Wand, 'Any Day Now' - fabulous ender at Hyde c. 1990, or his 'I've got the need' on All Platinum
  5. Really sad news, Dean was a total legend around Manchester - larger than life, always had an opinion whether you agreed with him or not but a total music fan through and through Never played boring or predictable sets - could drop in a beat ballad or some Jamaican soul and somehow blend it brilliantly. Remember stuff like Irma Thomas 'It's starting to get to me now' at Parkers, or Della Reese 'I've got the blues' upstairs in the big modern room at Stoke King's Hall 😀 Underrated as a radio DJ, some brilliant shows with Richard S in the mid 90's, and also as a writer - no-one else reviewed a record like him:- "Glenn Miller - Where is the Love (Doctor Bird 45). A highly collectable UK reggae label ain't the first place you would look for killer crossover but then who would have thought, all those years ago in PE, that plimsolls would become fashionable" 😁 (Togetherness Mar '99) Wished him well a couple of months back and he was hopeful to be on the mend but sadly not RIP Dean - thanks for some great memories
  6. Wow, she really sings that - love the shot of her from behind the piano, just alone with the song despite the big crowd, Obama, etc. Shame it keeps cutting to Carole King acting like a bit of a dick but I suppose you would do if you'd written the song
  7. Was just playing this one earlier today before I read the news - one of her best IMO, and that's saying something of course. Very sad news
  8. Lovely playlist - great to see this thread resurrected, always enjoy seeing what folk are listening to Here's mine from last Fri night (well early Sat morning, sun coming up by the time I finished 😀). Bought Beloyd last week on here and was giving that a spin so got into a 70's type groove with a few more:- Beloyd - Get into your life (20th Century) David Morris Jr - Midnight lady (Buddah) Dionne Warwick - Once you hit the road (WB) Laura Greene - You take my heart away (Epic) Invitations - Look on the good side (Silver Blue) Webster Lewis - You deserve to dance (Epic) Gorgeous George - Strange Book (Homark) Jerry Butler - High Stepper (Mercury) Catch - Mr Nice Guy (LK) Cissy Stone - Gone but not forgotten (Decca) Blackbyrds - Lady (Fantasy) Aquarian Dream - Phoenix (Buddah) Windy City - We party heavy up in heah (Innovation II) Gladys - Love (O-Gee) Moments - Sweet, sweet lady (Stang) J.R. Bailey - Love won't wear off (Calla)
  9. Loved 'I was a fool' since Roger B used to play it at Hyde Botanical c. 1990, plus Mark Robertson from Manchester around the same time Funny though, one of those tunes that totally takes off in a venue but always sounds a bit underpowered at home in comparison
  10. Thanks Chalky - what was it like crowd / atmosphere wise? Much different to other years? Was Sunday night busy?
  11. Injured my back last Wed so couldn't get to Cleethorpes - totally gutted, first one I've missed How did it go? Would love to hear from folks who were there
