  1. Nice post Steve. I like the Delphi label, as do plenty others. A true local, minor independent but with several good releases. The Prophets have the distinction of releasing one of the most highly regarded Northern records of all time plus a number of more widely available, catchy tunes.

  4. Many, many of them Jem, and judging from what's happening now albeit on a modest scale, plenty of tunes in one format or another. Maybe Timi Yuro 'It'll Never Be Over' had it had a US 45 release? Perhaps Frank Wilson's 'Do I' had copies not been binned. Countless others. Some of us have hundreds and hundreds of good/excellent/brilliant records that eclipse everything the pop music industry came up with. Ironically, there isn't a pop music industry as such anymore apart from a few girls who are branded soulful eg Joss, Duffy, Amy don't know the names of any others sorry but there must be some as I keep hearing awful ringtones.
  5. I think the star thing helps us to scroll down quickly rather than take a closer look. The real threat lies in photocopies of original labels being stuck on boots, counterfeits etc. It's reached the point that eBay dealers with an England address are not worth checking out as the majority are flogging unoriginal records. There is a market for repro stuff but it should be abundantly clear that it is not the real deal. Lot of fake Pointers Sisters on Atlantic flying around recently and selling for £50 apparently...unbelievable.

  7. No, not at all. You're still on the scene. Many went just the once; some I took in as guests but left underwhelmed. Some 'regulars' went more than I did, never danced and were there simply to be with mates or a girlfriend and had no interest in the music then or now, strange though that may seem.
  8. Wigan for me. But the triple whammy of Mecca-Casino-Ritz on a weekend trumps all. Gethro's book brought plenty back for me such as the decor details at Blackpool Mecca. But how can you compare classic 100 Club Nighters of the 90's with all the 60's oldies and latest discoveries, to say, the Twisted Wheel or Torch, venues that had been and gone before I got involved? The earliest venues deserve loads of votes but might not get as many as the mass-market places attended by a more diverse audience.

  10. John Manship has a scarce issue up for auction at present.
  11. No, I think it's a label. Bit like Atlantic. Arctic is another label, sometimes pale blue and occasionally white which really confuses me as I have to check the bootleg guide in case I play a second issue. I think someone out there collects ocean related labels too, more weird than confusing as the records are filed by number instead of alphabetical order. This sounds like office work to me but it could be fun I suppose...
  12. Leonard, please leave the item where it is to save me starting a thread 'Befuddled in London'. I'm inclined to blame Starbucks rather than Dave Rimmer but surely Manny has to carry the can for hyping up the Holy Grails. Mind you, he does have some tasty big-ticket OK for dee-jaying items in his weekly competition. I suspect all of us who buy and (have to) sell records are prone to marketing our wares in cliched terms but those in the Secret Society understand the language. Going back on thread, I am confused by 'going big', 'current spin', 'recently reactivated', 'copy going spare' which loosely translate as price shooting up, my mate played this, found at the bottom of the sales box and quantity just turned up.
  13. Why? He's senseless already. This is the 'celeb' who single handedly banned sweet and pop sales in schools by cuddling up to some politicians. I think he might be to blame for all those cookery programmes on TV nowadays.
  14. Or 'trust me'. Or any politician who opens their mouth.
  15. Two schools of thought on this. The book actually helped diggers with limited knowledge and brought a heap of rare records to the surface. Alternatively, the era of dirt cheap records ended and everyone started scrapping for rarities pushing the prices up. The onslaught of eBay and emergence of Popsike changed the way US dealers did business just as much as John's books. In trips to the US recently, it has been a real asset despite the higher prices of records as it's better to have the records at any price rather than not at all.
  16. Doubt it. The last one never sold. Virtually no difference between editions. Tim's been left well and truly behind. Not sure there is a place for his book now John has cornered the market.
  17. Edition 7 is long overdue but I hope it reflects the actual market rather than just John's sales. Not sure why albums are to feature in this. The volume will be too big to travel with, and too heavy unless there is to be a paperback edition. Sure, I will buy a copy but plan to carry on using volumes 5 and 6 as they have useful info in them.
  18. These fiendish cover-uppers don't fool us for long eh? They then spend their evenings scratching sellotape off torn labels. Should really be banned...
  19. Hi Kirsty. Have you been watching too many Masterchef programmes? Says Sparkles on the label... sounds a bit like Sprinkles.
  20. Great photos Dave. I'll be getting the book shortly.
  21. One of the best female singing voices ever. So, rich, distinctive and clear.
  22. Same here Len. The sleeve notes credited Nev Wherry (deceased) which gets you reflecting. One of too many young soulies gone too soon. Great LP by the way and easily one of the best to be released with loads of top tracks.
  23. Great record. Has the lot. Catchy, tuneful, storming up-tempo. Always well received at the venues I've heard it played. This is rare Northern at its best.
  24. PM to reserve anything or for further details. Prices include postage, packing and insurance. Payment by PayPal please. Thanks for looking.
