Hiss On Start Of Records
Small independent labels had to re use tape and usually press records on the cheap due to zero cash - also take into account the recording equipment was 10 years out of date compared to major labels like London RCA etc and it was quite difficult in some parts for a black labels to get even and fair distribution - sad but true . Bring on the hiss - it's surface noise of life

So Many Djs... Why?
I could name a few in the last 2 years, bought off ebay, all pressings, no knowledge, a ktf t shirt or two, and bingo, i'm a dj, Wayyyyy to many and not for the right reasons, not saying played out oldies here, i love oldies rare or not, its the amount of nights thrown together up n down the uk with zilch talent to program a set. Quite simply it's a play em & hope for the best, these days it seems to be the lets do a charity do and hey presto, flyers galore for the venue next month, nothing against a good cause or fund raising but come on,was there charity at wigan ? the wheel ? the torch ? No so why now? wannabe dj's everywhere and the biggest joke is people actually support some of them. Don't wish to be negative here, but something gotta give for the good of the scene.

Bootleg Rarer Then The Original ?
The whole bootleg side of things is very interesting, bjd, greenlight soul sounds etc, but also a few unusual 7's pop up every now and then, i have a soul power walter jackson with billy butler flip that looks almost hand made, yet pressed in the uk !!, got to love em, and part n parcel of the scene, frequently frowned upon, yet so important keep smiling

Ian Levines Top 40
Video effects aside I really enjoyed the film , seeing artists that I thought I would never see on screen and some great interviews on Djs the scene the bootleggers - it's 100% passion for northern film, with a few funny stories thrown into the mix , my fave bit ??? Rose batiste with her interview on wanting a hit so badly , 30 years later she got it albeit a northern hit !! But she also got the appreciation from the uk soul fans and that's solid gold .

Good point, and i always run a mile when someone messes with anything like this classic, however this i feel is very good, and mixing marvin alongside aretha is talent, it may not be to everyone's liking, however i can't knock this remix, it's good and as Ian D quite rightly states, it may bring people into other soul sounds and seek out the original. I play this a lot on radio, and it's popular

Featurecast - One step is a work of genius, when someone messes with a gaye/franklyn track i would run a mile but this is really cleaver and works so so well, just one example of cleaver editing, time stretch and thought. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EQp-j5g_T4

The Most Miserable Record Dealer
Catherine jones in sandbach was a tough lady to deal with , I remember Keith Minshull getting barred as she had count boxes of loads of British issues - I bought a few bits and luckily served by her husband !! Cath wasn't in that day and I gave him a list but nothing - he agreed to let me look thru the racks - everything I picked out to buy was a "work of art" according to him !! Cheap records and stone mint too but mr Minshull and a few others raped it on sue action stateside etc .

Did We Know Bobby Paris Had Died?
Met bobby in Vegas walking past me by chance - I stopped him and had a great chat . He was a real nice guy - talking about his house and wife etc . I spoke in detail about his music that sort of shocked him given my age at the time (36) but I will say he was a gent and another legend gone . Rip bobby - we will miss you

Dj Starting Off - Your Top Tip ?
Buy ovo records, some don't cost the earth, there are many good £10-£50 records that will keep a lot of punters happy, i have always bought records i like, NEVER buying a sound cus it went down well here n there for so n so, this must be about pleasing yourself, and looking at a dancefloor that's full. Don't be afraid to play oldies, i never know when a good record become a bad one, oh, and enjoy it, if you don't enjoy it...... stop ! Good luck to you.
