  1. Just searched and sorry it was the Preston Cyber Men in the thread in may
  2. Wasn't there a thread a couple of months ago that detailed their names and exploits, might have been contained in another thread, might be wrong
  3. Very hard to imagine what direction Otis would have taken I think. Dock of the Bay was a little different to a lot of his output in its feel , his performance at Monterey introduced him to a whole new audience and maybe that would have taken him away from his roots into a more mainstream pop culture, we'll never know but great question ,I look forward to reading others thoughts.
  4. I guess it depends what you want from a night, if you want to dance a good Dj fills the dancefloor, a great Dj keeps it full, for me it's unpredictability that makes a great Dj as i'm just as happy listening to great music as I am dancing to it so if I can come away from a night with three things in my mind, not heard that in ages, never heard that before and a few tunes noted for future listening then I'm happy. On the use of the mike it depends on the Dj, a clear and enthusiastic voice can add to the atmosphere, incoherrent babling just annoys me , is it just me or do Dj's in general never seem to tell you the artist and title of the one record in the night you don't know and really like?
  5. Sounds like she is competing with the awful orchestration and that bleedin rimshot or whatever it is that bangs away constantly in the background is very annoying, cannot fault her voice though
  6. Great thread mate, I've always wondered too,
  7. On the You Tube page under the video click on "share" , url comes up in blue, right click and copy, paste into message on here,
  8. Hi Lorriane, I only mentioned the poetry bit because that is one of my interests and I found this many years ago whilst searching you tube for poetry videos and it became my introduction to Slam which with the passage of time has become popular over here and spawned another form Flash fiction. Very interesting to read you observation and first hand expereince . I must admit it had never occured to me that he might not have written it, I'll have to research that some more, got to say I would be disappointed if he hadn't ,but it would not be the end of the world it's still a fabulous piece of writing which deserves to be heard by more people, for me it has stood the test of time which all good writing should.
  9. Hi , my second passion after Soul music is poetry, I've done a quick search of the site but cannot find any reference to this and I thought it might be of interest to some of you, sorry if it has been posted before at some time.

  13. Nice cup of tea, toast with homemade jam, Saturday was goin so well, knew I should have ignored this
  14. My conversion started at a church disco around 68/69, amongst the usual pop fodder of the day the Dj played a string of Motown,Third FInger etc but what blew me away was 25 miles. It seems odd now but my best mate who was a couple of years older than me was already into soul and I never knew,it was his secret from his parents he'd been going out to local clubs for months.I'd go round to his early Saturday night as he was getting ready he'd have Mike Raven on the radio and there started my soul education.Never a big club goer I went to the Casino a couple of times and that was it until the mid 80's when I went to a number of small local nights and really discovered Northern, left the scene late eighties to return about 5 yrs ago, more active now than ever.
  15. Just the other week at a venue the Dj played a request ,Lee Dorsey's Ride Your Pony, the girl who asked for it took to the floor and danced what I presume was The Pony, she was quickly joined by a guy from the other side of the dance floor, they had the floor to themselves, I wouldn't say they didn't know each other but the they were not together at the event, they danced in almost perfect harmony and got a round of applause at the end.For me at any rate it was the first time I'd seen anyone do a recognised dance at a Northern night. As for where the dances came from the late fifties onward I' d hazard a guess in some cases from the performers themselves or dance groups when seen on Tv shows interpreting the lyrics.
  16. Super Limited! as opposed to what, just limited, as has been said ........Shite
  17. Hi All, been doing a bit of tidying came across a Jay Boy demo, if anyone on here is looking to complete a set it's free to a good home, nothing exciting I'm afraid ,Lou and Laura Poole Only you Know and I know, anyone needing it to complete a set is welcome to it, no idea of its value or rarity which would not make any difference, contact me if interseted,
  18. Oh dear, that's shite
  19. i 've always loved em' ,
  20. Do you know this version Len, ,I'm guessing you will but just in case
  21. I hope this is relevant to your questions, no answers but my opinion.I had a discussion with a local Dj last Saturday night that touches on one of the questions you ask.We were talking about how certain tunes get broken, not the obscure but but what would have been considered just Soul records back in the day, I think this has been touched on on another thread but please bear with me, we were talking about sounds like Marvin Gaye Come Get to This, Hold Back the Night which seems to be getting some plays, I noticed Len I think it was on here saying he had played something by Chic.My mate the Dj said he had played a certain tune six months previous with dance floor clearing properties only for a guesting bigger named Dj to play the very same tune two months later and it filled the floor, same venue, basically same reguilar crowd, why the difference? I'm not a Dj ,never have been never will be but I am aware it must take a fair amount of knowledge and skill to read a room and put a set list together, I have recently seen a relativley quiet room lifted by the Dj playing the right tune at the right time.I think the scene is the sum of its constituent parts, we all have a part to play, I can have a great night without dancing as long as the music is good, many times in the past I have spoked to Dj's after their set to apologise for not dancing but to stress I thought they played a good un', I've always thought a little appreciation goes a long way . Got lost in my thoughts now and the funny farm beckons, a walk in the dark and pissing rain should clear my head until the berer kicks in tonight, hope this had a semblance of relevance.
  22. That brought back a few happy memories, cheers for posting, never did try the Benedictine
  23. Ok three of you have put me right though I was referring to my experience over the last eight years or so,perhaps I've been wearing rose tinted specs but I'm always open to being proved wrong which it seems I was.
