Dave Godins - Deep Soul Treasures Volume 5 ?

I have a tape somewhere in the house Dave sent me as a wide eyed teenager falling in love with Deep Soul, no track listing though from memory side one contained mostly the tracks which later made up the bulk of Treasures Vol 1, side two had Irma Thomas's then latest album on Fungus. If I can find it I'll post up any tracks not already mentioned on this thread should there be any.

Cafe That Played Northern In The 1970's

I know it's a bit late being the end of the holiday season but a heads up for anyone planning a visit next year.I was in Dubrovnik a month ago and came across The Soul Cafe at the end of one of the streets in the Old Town.Quite hard to find as it is only advertised with a small chalked blackboard which you can easily miss.No food just a great place to sit with a beer or coffee away from the crowds ,the owner was a nice guy ,music played ranged from bluesy big band to funk while I was there .Checked it out on Trip Advisor later and it's a matter of luck what's playing as other reviewer's heard a range of Classic soul.Probably no Northern but nice to find quality music where you'd least expect it.

Was This Record Ever Played At A Northern Venue?

Heard this played about 6months ago in amongst one of the oddest sets I have heard at a Northern event, an odd mixture of 70's pop soul,Motown chart stuff etc,I'd tried to banish it from my memory as he also played something else far worse (yes it was that bad)which thankfully I can't remember

		Djing

Just a few thoughts from a simple minded punter,no aspirations to be a Dj, this might be an age thing but I'd be happy if some Dj' s just turned down the volume a tad, volume just does not equate with increased enjoyment of the music ,I don't feel I should have to leave the room or use a megaphone to carry on a conversation, maybe that's just me. As with a couple of others I'd be interested to know Rob' s pedigree on the scene as with each post the only things that spring to mind concerning the scene are "arse and elbow" .I can picture it now and by the way I like and often dance to the record but I can only imagine the reaction from some quarters if over the mike a Dj announces "and now for my specially extended double mixed ,scratched dubbed ,sequenced or whatever the technical jargon is (I should know but to be honest I lost interest half way through some of the posts) 15 min version of Bob Sinclair's Tribute. I struggle to get to the end of The Brothers without collapsing in a heap so for me play the records as intended don't faff about with something that aint broken I'll put my head back in the sand now.

		What The Hell Is Happening?

I would be interested to know about any folk who have taken these lessons.... Maybe its fun for some and helps a lot..... My mates wife had a couple of lessons,he's been on the scene over 30yr but it's all new to her, she didn't tell him about the lessons and just surprised him at a night by getting up to dance. The lessons gave her the confidence so in that sense not a bad thing.I've seen one bloke showing a young lad how to do a couple of moves on the dance floor, not on in my opinion. As to the rights and wrongs of the DVD and whether Fiona can dance or not as a crap dancer myself I have to say I don't really care.I do however tire of telling people who say they can't dance Northern to just get out there, feel the music and do your own thing no one really cares, though I have to say I have on one occasion been proved wrong on that by a self appointed dance policeman.

		Soul Source Favourite Motown Song

Great thread,I wish I hadn't read the thing so far without first stating my choice as so many fine records have bern mentioned,I'll go with the first one that popped into my head at the start,Contours Little Misunderstanding.Reason, I think it was the first Motown track I heard played other than on the radio in a club, can still picture that night to this day.

Northern Soul - Selling The Faith

If that's intended as another dig at me my home isn't full of fisting logo tat and never will be, I bought one mug for use at work, enough people already think I'm a sad old bastard as it is for being involved in Northern Soul in the first place without supposed kindred spirits having a pop as well, lighten up folks, I haven't committed a crime as far as I know,if I have then I plead guilty as charged.

Northern Soul - Selling The Faith

Odd as this may seem as I'm as yet the only person who seems to have actually bought any tat or admitted to it if there was a poll I'd vote No to merchandise at events, not for any "keeping the scene pure" reasons as you put it but as I have said at Prestatyn it just did not look or feel right to me plus I can get all the tat I want off good old ebay without either being made to feel like I'm in some way selling out the music I have followed and loved for over forty years or I'm some kind of sad moron with no taste,

Northern Soul - Selling The Faith

Nor mine, my post was aimed at the tat side of things some of which I bought, obviously selling illegal CD' s is totally out of order and should and could have been stopped by the promoters,

Northern Soul - Selling The Faith

I'll put my head over the barricades and hold my hand up to buying some tat, not much but I have always liked a good pin badge, the two coasters I bought were to my mind quite tasteful and a single mug. My reasons for these purchases follow, the pin badges to go on my rucksack's , I have three with maybe three badges on each and that's enough, why? Walking in my case can be a solitary pursuit and should I stop for a beer along the way they might be spotted by a fellow soulie and thus induce conversation, the mug likewise ,I use it at work and should anyone visiting my workplace be of a similar ilk again conversation my follow. The coasters, well it's my house and if I am going to have coasters on my coffee table the Martha Reeves and Timi Yuro to my mind look better than a couple of others used previously. As I have said on somewhere else on here the Bazzar would have been better placed elsewhere , it was the first thing we saw as we entered from the camp side of the building and for me did not create a good first impression, plus I guess it took up a lot of what was to me much needed seating room in the main room, we ended up standing every time we went in there, and yes there was an awful lot of stuff that I would not buy my worst enemy . It didn't however cause me as much head shaking as the profusion of pork pie, flat and trilby hats on show, we all have things that bug us about the scene , one question I would ask is were the stallholders from the scene and trying to make a living out of their passion or were they just joe soap from wherever trying to make a fast buck and does it make any difference which?

Al Green - Genius I Reckon

It must have been a different concert I saw because believe me you would remember seeing Rufus Thomas, I'm guessing they did an extra show when Al Green recoverd from the flu and kept PM as support after he went down so well at the concert I saw. Happy days indeed,
