Just listened ,one quote from Stuart Cosgrove resonated as not having changed "the media served to confine the scene rather than actually define the scene in any positive way". I think it gave a more balanced view more so than recent articles, I think it was Stuart Cosgrove again who said something along the lines of people writing articles with little or no real knowledge of the scene.

It would prick my ears up if i heard it on the radio , northern feel cloned with brit pop, I expected there to be a more soulful vocal but found non at all. Just another pop record ,no objection to him trying to make a Northern record plenty of others have tried, for me failed on all fronts,vocal, lyric and cliched guitar solo where it should have had a sax break if he really wanted to try making a northern style record,not that that would have changed my opinion. Will probably get played on Craig Charles show as a perfect slab of home grown Northern Soul 🤣

Interesting thread, I holidayed halfway between Marmaris and Iclemere about seven years ago, didn't go into Iclemere at night but during the day at that time there was just the one bar we saw advertising a N/S night, there could well have been others but if not maybe he did well bringing in the English and over time others have followed suit. I guess from little acorns that some locals might take a liking and a local scene could follow,more likely in Marmaris one would think. Would that scene translate into record buying and collecting is another thing altogether. I think on one hand the scene will as we see happening now become more of a social thing, afternoon sessions seem to be sprouting up here there and everywhere and from what i hear are well attended. I'll hold my hand up we don't go out and haven't done since covid bar a few odd nights, when we did go out I really didn't see a night where there were loads of so called handbagger's which was the fear every time N/S was featured in the media be it the film One Show whatever. Of course there was always some but never the flood many predicted. Whether that has changed and there are more now I'd be interested to hear from regular punters. Going forward I think there will always be a hard core looking for a night that shies away from the top 500 and maybe as some of the newbies get tired of the more popular nights they may well move into the rare and underplayed venues. I'm of an age where I doubt I'll see much change as to what the scene is now. Quite often on here I've seen the phrase in one way or another "the scene dying with us", who exactly are "us". I know the majority on the scene are the wrong end of 60,I know very few people on here personally so ages other than hints in posts are a mystery, I am aware that there are several under 60 so "the scene dying with us" could be a long way off. Long term we could see a healthier yet smaller scene, less venues but well attended with maybe, just maybe a reversal of the current oldies dominated scene to one with a more varied playlist. Do I really care, yes, but for now I'll keep digging out tunes I like for less than twenty quid, buying the odd long time want when the price is right and enjoy the excitement of that little brown packet hitting the door matt. I have very much mixed feelings on this kind of thing, I haven't seen the footage you mention but it's been happening for some time and as I see it can only get worse. I'm very much a live and let live kinda bloke on many things in society in general , plenty of things get my goat that I think why would you want to do that. Back to the point in question, I don't get out much anymore, pre covid I watched a mate and his group of friends dancing in a circle, arms waving in the air ,I hesitate to call it dancing to Petula Clark so a double whammy there, I just thought what is it coming to, no!! no!! no!!. Bear in mind this was a group of people with history on the scene not johhny come lately's .When i questioned him he said as you have said above "it was just a bit of fun". I've read many threads on here regarding lets say the dumbing down of the scene, be it Tv exposure, the proms, baggy trousers etc and there seems to be a split between a hardcore group of people who up vote anything defending the scene as was and rarely see any other point of view, nothing wrong in that , I admire their undoubted devotion to scene they've lived their life on, on the other hand you have the more relaxed attitude where people don't get too hot under the collar about it, both sides I feel have the right to express their view. What I do find annoying is what I sometimes see as those defending the scene of old belittling those with a different view when those people it seems to me have just as much love and knowledge for and of the scene through time spent. I guess it's something that is not going to go away, something we are going to have to live with. I don't like it, personally don't think it has a place , it would appear more people as they get older and can't dance as once they did are maybe looking for alternative ways to enjoy the night, taking the scene less seriously. Unfortunately the wider public's view of Northern Soul tends to be one taken from the media which always focus on the same aspects, vests, baggy trousers ,circle skirts and four or five tunes, I have got to the stage when someone asks me what music I enjoy I never say Northern Soul, I'll say 60's soul, rare soul, if they then mention NS I'll say yes and try to explain away the media view. Just to be clear, I don't like it, don't think it has a place, I just shake my head and let them get on with it, I won't be losing any sleep over it, should I choose to venture out again given the choice I'd be at Ashton Ukranian Club as I used to do pre covid where the true scene I believe is still alive and thriving.

I gave up after about 15 mins, as above not what I expected. As for things being a bit off I tend to think the writers of some dramas take a particular political stance and often ignore a more balanced view of events.

New series of Astrid in Paris this week, enjoyed previous ones it's been interesting watching Astrid's character develop.

I was thinking along those lines but I am just as happy the way it is now. I think for a separate thread of just current artists to work it would need far greater input from members posting releases they are aware of, in that I'm as guilty as anyone for not contributing. Unless you buy current I'm guessing many would be amazed at the volume of releases that are out there. I wasn't aware of Olivia Dean, just checked her out on youtube , lovely voice, nice tunes but not something I would buy or listen to at home but thank you for the heads up.

I've bought quite a few of the releases on the thread and find it a valuable resource as I don't do facebook or any other soul related sites. I tend to up vote if I like a release and intend to buy, I don't feel the need to comment further though I hadn't considered by commenting it offers validation of the release to the label owner. I doubt people don't comment to keep the release under the radar as it's out there for all to see once posted. I think when hearing a release you either like it or don't and no amount of positive comments would change my opinion. The only result of a quantity of positive comments on limited releases to my mind would be and I'm speculating here people buying to sell on for a profit thus genuine buyers hearing it later missing out should it sell out.

Sorry for the long winded answer Peter but you did ask and offer a dither option. After much head scratching my brain feels like it's full of popping candy with names jumping in and out of the ether. If you had asked that question when I first started on my lifelong soul journey it would have been a lot easier to answer, no thought would have been needed, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight and for the group The Temptations with a nod to Sam and Dave (artist,artists not quite a group ) Time moves on and though I still love all the aforementioned such is the diversity of my taste across the spectrum of soul music I've given it some thought and can't come up with a favourite. Using the number of records in my collection by a particular artist wouldn't make them a favourite. I've probably got more records by the Supremes than anyone else but they wouldn't come close to the top. Some great choices already mentioned, both Womack and Taylor would be there about's, could I choose between two Betty's(e) , Lavette and Everett, could Kool and the Gang triumph over the Ohio Players, Marvin,Curtis, Johnny Nash, Joe Simon, whose music could I not bear to never hear again.......Peter you're a bad man 🙂, don't even think of revisiting a fav record thread 😂 . First record I heard by Otis, Shake, hooked after that, first became aware of Womack with the Valentinos but it was Harry Hippie /I Can Understand It that had me buying all his 70's early eighties albums, Gladys would be Just Walk in My Shoes church hall disco, only artist I've got close enough to to ask for an autograph shaking like a leaf (me not Gladys). My thoughts at the end where once you've gone down that road that no matter what happens politicaly in the future there would be no going back. That was a frightening statistic, 400 million more cameras in three years.

Total Trust on iplayer, truly frightening documentary on how China uses and continues to increase its use of technology to monitor and control its people. CCTV taken to the extreme. I was left with mixed feelings about the civic pride aspect of the programme, it's one thing to monitor litter, parking etc but when again taken to the extreme it was rather worrying. I know a few people who would only be too happy to take on the power some of the people in the programme had in watching and reporting on their neighbours.

Not expecting this to go far as a new topic but this amused me this morning, looking through record sales on here one seller used the often used description "under the radar". Following his youtube link as happens these days up came an advert before the record that made me smile for a "radar blocker". Maybe one for the dj wishing to keep his under the radar set that way 🤔.
