John Anderson's Soul Junction Does It Again, Hopkins Bros
Can't help but instead try look it from the artist's point of view, they're real people, not inanimate discs, many still living and breathing, who created this music. Would the Hopkins Bros, or any other singer, rather a) have the few remaining copies of the records they made stay "exclusive" and only be heard by people who get to hear the current owners play them in a limited # of soul venues, in return for which of course they themselves get sweet FA b) be paid good money for the master rights but purely so that they agree their music cannot ever be reissued to a wider audience (this seems to be what some people are leaning towards as a "win/win" for both the artists and the Scene) c) strike a legit licensing deal and know that 100's of soul fans around the world are finally buying and loving, and most importantly sharing, the songs they put their heart and soul into all those years ago Having worked with dozens of soul artists now they almost invariably have variations of the same story - they were never paid properly, never got the recognition they deserved, and nowadays to greater or smaller extent are all not just long in years but in failing health too, which in America is definitely no joke. They know people with funny accents across the water mysteriously still adore recordings of theirs they not only rarely own but often barely remember, they also know these records are selling for crazy amounts that they don't see a penny of. So given the choice? Do you think many of them would be happy just to know a few copies of their recordings are in "good hands" and go for a)? You'd definitely have plenty accept b), simply because they'd be grateful for the extra money just to survive. But if they were really given a choice between b) or c)? No right answer, but having had an amazing singer try and refuse their entire fee because the pure experience of being on a stage having a packed audience cheer their hearts out for their songs for the first time in decades, and knowing the music they created not just still survives but will even outlive them, meant more to them than the money ever could, can't help feeling know which way am leaning on this one. ps massively over-simplistic assumption here that the singers own the rights, most don't, but for the Hopkins at least it's true.

The Ray King Soul Band Lp
I'm a man version is indeed off the hook, went looking for Ray King online out of curiosity a few years ago, he's easy to find, based in Coventry, saw a good quote from one of the Specials saying if there hadn't been a Ray King then 2-Tone wouldn't have existed, nice.

Paypal Gift Payments
I started a thread here with all the details of that violin transaction when it happened, basically to grant a refund Paypal insisted the buyer first destroyed the violin instead of sending it back to the seller, crazy, imagine it was a rare soul 45 and you were told to smash it to get your money back....

Paypal Gift Payments
Doesn't matter if you like it or not Pete - keep using it and Paypal will stop you, happened to me last year, had a dozen or so buyers send payment as gift, then got a Paypal message telling me they were cutting off my ability to receive gift amounts, ie they spotted a pattern and moved unilaterally to make sure they'd keep getting their $% even though they had no idea what the payments were for. Plus some countries - Germany for one - don't allow it at all Can't win huh.

John Anderson's Soul Junction Does It Again, Hopkins Bros
We're all proprietary of our rarest records, but even though I always get grumpy for a moment (or 3) if something I've spent ages finding gets reissued, can NEVER moan if it's a legit reissue where the original artists are (finally!) getting paid Opposite is true 1000% for non licensed repro's, those guys can seriously f#*# themselves. Be glad you don't collect rare 60s garage, lookalike bullshit hell.

Taxman To Hit Ebay Sellers
If you haven't documented the cost of all the records you've bought over the years then it's beyond tough to come up with basis Bob, sure if you set up as a business from day 1 you can keep a formal inventory but most of us built up stacks over the years. And even now if you buy a $$$ 45 at a record fair do you really think you're going to get a receipt from the seller. On top of that, I help out friends in Europe by bidding on records for them w sellers who refuse to sell to non-US buyers, they then reimburse me for the cost of these records/shipping....but all this counts towards my $20k too and if I get audited will have to get affidavits from all of them to avoid these amounts all being counted as taxable too. Totally beyond a huge pain in the arse.

Taxman To Hit Ebay Sellers
It's already happened here in the States - paypal sends a report to the IRS if you receive more than $20,000 in a year and have over transactions, then it's up to you to prove its not all taxable. Pretty impossible to come up w documentation - say I bought a record for cash 4 years ago at a record fair for $500, obviously there's no receipt, sell it now for the same amount, actually make 0 profit but based on this the IRS can say the whole $500 on the sale is taxable income. Nightmare.

SOLD - many thanks

Postage From America
That's for priority, right price too for a single 45 in a regular mailer w 2 pieces of card around it, actually depending how he packs it could even cost him a couple of $ more based on weight, advantage to you is quicker and allegedly you can track it too (I say allegedly because half the time tracking only works til it gets to the US sort facility so effectively useless), regular airmail is $6.90 w usual packing, you could write and ask if he'd do that instead
-
Gloria Fowler & Entros - Will You Be My Guy

Are John Manships Eyes Painted On?
Didn't know Lightning Hopkins was that good a looker!! Similarly Tami Lynn wasn't too happy when we were talking about her French ep with a white girl on the sleeve, but have a great photo posing with Harvey Scales where we're holding up a 60s Euro ps of his where instead of any attempt at a picture of him there's just a drawing of.... an empty sofa, we tried figuring out what they meant by that but came up totally blank.
-
Betty Harris Article
We loved putting her on stage here Kev, what a great weekend that was - Harvey Scales, Renaldo Domino, Don Gardner, Vernon Garrett, Lee Fields, Tami Lynn and then Betty closing out the show with an epic set, she was a total pleasure to work with too, good times

Worst Soul Numberplate Ever ?
Paul Daniels used to ponce around our village in a green Roller with the plate MAG1C (he lived next to Roger Moore who used to walk his dog down our street in his James Bond days, as a kiddie seeing 007 outside your window was quite the moment!)
