  1. I think there's another perspective that's worth looking at here, and it's as much through the prism of race as nationality that the UK's obsession with obscure soul music makes sense (IMO obviously ) UK music writer and radio DJ Charlie Gillett, in his book "Sound of the City", remarked about the tendency of white music enthusiasts and collectors to almost "curate" old forms of US Black music, and I guess British fans even more so. Think of the boom in interest in Trad Jazz in the 1950's, or hear the accounts of US bluesman Big Bill Broonzy's appearances in UK folk clubs in the same period, even before Jagger and co were picking up on US R&B artists whose time appeared to have long gone. By comparison, the US music writer Nelson George describes the developing music tastes of African-Americans as being in "continual flight from the status quo"; whilst white afficianados were busy collating, annotating and salivating over old vinyl, black folks were busy creating, listening to and dancing to the next big thing ........ one result of this (perhaps) is the comparatively small size of the US R&B "heritage" industry, compared to the size of the industry, both sides of the Atlantic, that continues to make money off the back of old, largely white, rock music.
  2. This thread takes me back to my earliest misheard soul lyric........ why does Diana Ross sing "As I pee out my window" in the Supremes' "Reflections"? TKO's a woman? Must also admit that I thought that "You Had Me Fooled" was sung by a woman for ages - well, it could have been Danni Woods
  3. Here's my favourite crossover tune - between a soul do and wedding reception, mind........ Detroit Emeralds - Feel The Need In Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwZFs1o2nPY Great stuff - enjoying this thread
  4. Really enjoying this thread ...... I knew about the fantastic Little Richard "deep" side (as Gareth says, one of the most gut-wrenching pieces of soul you're ever likely to hear, and backing Curtis Knight and the Isley's, but the other NS connections are new to me. Anyway, this thread has sent me off to listen to "the Wind Cries Mary"......... if that isn't soulful, I don't know what is
  5. Think it's also featured in one edition of a big video game - Grand Theft Auto? - probably just as likely to have been picked up from that. The WORST version without doubt is by the Pussycat Dolls ...... if you must YouTube it, I suggest you turn the sound down and just look at the nice pictures
  6. Wedge Haircut...... check Pegged Jeans.......check Floppy white belt....check Think I also had a "geordie jumper" (Baz will know what I mean lol)
  7. Nice to see you back Barry ........ To be honest, can't see what your concern about "status" is about......... love of soul music is a constant, ability/motivation to get out and about is a variable. I'm fortunate that I go somewhere different most weekends - gives me no status as such, and I have no great personal history to fall back on. I do get a bit fed up with people who don't/can't get out much these days telling me how much better it was "back in the day" - I just enjoy it for what it is - no need for what sounds too much like sour grapes. Two big points though : 1) Vast amounts of Northern sounds sooo much better at 4am in the morning through a big sound system in a packed hall 2) If you love to dance (i do) - home just won't do!
  8. I'd just like to put in a word for Willie - Soulgrit - a guy who is an original "Wheelite", still putting in the miles every weekend from Carlisle, with impeccable taste in venues (well, he's at every night I ever go to ), topped off by being one of the most friendly and approachable people you could ever wish to meet . Sod Grade II listing - Willie for the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square!

It's more worrying than that Gerd....... Soul Source is obviously now the home of all that secret geological information that they are keeping secret "The Continental Drifters"........ great band name for a cover-up!
  10. J J Barnes - Please Let Me In/Snowflake/Sweet Sherry/Baby Please Come Home Fidels - Try a Little Harder Steve Mancha - Still In My Heart Masqueraders - Do You Love Me Baby Martha Starr - No Part Time Love for Me Tina Britt - The Real Thing
  11. It all falls into place now....... James Trouble likes to talk dirty.......
  12. Using the mic's fine for those who know know how to use it, but let's be honest, most of the time it sounds like an over-enthusiastic member of the "Norman Collier Appreciation Society" has seized control of the decks
  13. Great shout ..... wonderful (barely) mid-tempo soul Should also add:- Shep - I'm Sitting In - quality passionate soul......
  14. The "Soul or Nothing" room at the Radcliffe nighter last Saturday ended at 7am with the following couple of beauties (c/o Wayne) :- Joe Hinton - Don't Tell Her the Truth Zerben Hicks & Dynamics - Lights Out Counselling was available on site for those who suddenly felt the need to end it all there and then.........
  15. I'm interested in those who used to dance, but have declared that they have "retired". The only times that I haven't been able to dance (having done my back in) at a soul night or nighter, I've felt quite uneasy..... Anybody out there who's packed in dancing, but still out and about and loving the music - how easy was it? (I can't keep still ) Did you find your music tastes and venue preferences changing? It'll come to us all........

Is this the tune that Dave Ripolles spun at the Wilton on Friday, Chalky? Not heard it before - nice tune!
  17. I love the bass playing on both "Time" and "Running Back and Forth" by Edwin Starr - anybody know if it's Bob Babbitt playing on these sides?
  18. So many of Dave Hamilton's productions seem to feature such crisp, loud horns - I guess Black Detroit must have had a hell of a lot of good school marching bands in the 60's! Three examples :- Little Ann - What Can I Do Tobi Lark - Challenge My Love Dotty & Millie - Talkin' Bout My Baby
  19. Cry Like a Baby - Aretha Franklin
  20. Newton Aycliffe (Co Durham) must be in with a shout as top Northern Soul town - seem to remember John Manship saying on this forum (when the topic was debated previously) that he had over 30 people with NA addresses registered with his auction site

  25. Personally love "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf Pts I and II" by Jimmy Smith (think it's on Verve?)..... on Part II, sounds like Smith's B3 is about to explode
