Northern Soul What Does It Cost You?
I know. That's the point I was trying to make. I'm naively thinking a few hundred quid should sort the Motown albums out, and that's easily sorted by selling a few 45's. But no, it's not that easy is it? And now, in the immortal words of Magnus Magnusson "I've started so I'll finish". And, when you're trawling round Ebay you always come across that little 45 that you sold 20+ years ago for a fiver & a bag of chips ..... Phil

Northern Soul What Does It Cost You?
I decided to not spend any real money on records any more, but to satisfy the collecting bug just collect all the Uk Tamla Motown LP's on both Mono and Stereo. Anyway since my decison about 6 weeks ago I have spent in excess of £4k (despite selling a couple of 45's) and I'm still nowhere near. It just goes on & on dunnit? Phil

Dave's brother is Franny. Not seen him for a while. Dave passed on a few years ago now, and Tommy was caretaker at a school in Guiseley last time I saw him (about 4 years ago). Phil

Levine's New Album
I have now got hold of a copy of the controversial album and have had only a quick listen so far. I am going away for a few days and I will be taking this along to listen to (not exclusively of course). When I have listened a few times I will give an honest appraisal of the tracks. But on first listen there are a couple of tracks that stand out as being rather good to my ears. Phil

Anyone Seen This?
Now THAT's an idea. If I put my money into doing such a project can I count on all Soul-Sourcers to support it and buy a copy? I'll do a good discount, especially if you pay in advance. RRP £12.99, Soul Source price only £5.00 + £1.25 P&P must be paid in advance by paypal to wouldilie@soulon45mix.com Phil

How Many Records Out There For Sale?
Not a bad idea, but 100 for £100 sounds better to me. Still want 6? Phil

How Many Records Out There For Sale?
I have been buying and selling records (on a purely private basis) for many a year now. And it is my observation that it has, over the last 5 years or so, become increasingly more difficult to sell tunes outside the top 500 or 1000 for anything approaching their former perceived value. This means that, as Mark and others have said, that many really good but not "in-demand" records just don't sell. Or rather they do but only at a greatly reduced price from their perceived value. But the top 500 / 1000 tunes p[lus current in-demanders now fetch unvelievably high prices. At the moment I have about 2500 records to sell, with more being added to the pile almost daily. But I have no idea how I am going to get rid of anything more than about 10-15% of them. And I need to to fund my new found obsession for Motown albums:) Phil

Levine Manifesto Interview
I'm from Yorkshire and I wasn't there that night at the Dome or indeed any other, and you're right I don't give a damn. In fact it has so little bearing to my life that I wouldn't have posted to this at all save for the weird comment by one Stuart T relating me, and Ian Levine's gym to this thread.

Levine Manifesto Interview
What on earth is this supposed to mean? I've never been to either the Dome or Ian Levine's gym. If you're going to make fun of me and my faith at least have the decency to explain what you're on about.

Value Please - Willie White - Nobody Likes Me - Gold Soul
Sorry mate ..... bit tired ....been a long week. It is a good record, I agree. Maybe a bit gritty for some folks taste? I used to play it a bit back to back with JoAnn Garrett - Whatcha Been Doing as a gritty Detroit pairing It's much better than that George Lemons rubbish, but boy did I get a boat loada dosh for that one Phil

Value Please - Willie White - Nobody Likes Me - Gold Soul
??? Too much? Too little? I don't understand. I got it (well two copies actuall) in Detroit about 15 or so years ago for about a dollar apiece. When i played it it never got much reaction. I really don't see it being worth a whole lot. It's not mega rare or owt is it? Phil

Value Please - Willie White - Nobody Likes Me - Gold Soul
I used to play it at The Griffin niters. It's my theme tune and probably worth at least 15-20? Phil

Levine's New Album
How amusing. I assume from this comment that you're inferring that there's some sort of collusion between people who post positive comments about the Northernsoul 2007 album? I have met and spoken to Chris L once only in my entire life and that was 8 years ago. Just because people have different views to the minority majority on here doesn't mean there's a conspiracy. I speak as I find, always have done and always will. Although nowadays I do it in a non-abusive manner. Phil

Mark, If these emails are abusive or nasty then that kind of behaviour simply cannot be condoned. I think whoever has sent these emails should be named and their content exposed. If they habve used SS PM facilities then possibly banned from the site for abuse. Mods ? This is supposed to be a forum for discussion and debate isn't it? Northern Soul is and always has been a very broad church, and as such will lead to conflict of opinion from time to time, but when it disintegrates to abusive or nasty personal messages and emails then that's taking things waaayyy too far. That's how I feel anyway. Phil

I suppose because I said I liked his stuff and said it had a right to be called Northern Soul, you maybe label me as a Levine disciple? Well I'm not. And I certainly don't agree with the way IL launched into folks the way he did on the radio show. But then again I believe in turning the other cheek. But that's because I'm actually a disciple of a different jewish bloke - one who was crucified 2000 years ago and whose entry into m y life changed everything for me. However, that said, I can understand the frustration that makes him react the way he does. He creates something that he, and indeed many others, feel is valid work. Gives artists who would otherwise never be heard a chance to perform again (just like he did with Motorcity). And all he gets is slagged off for it. The Flirtations, Jimmy James etc etc. Who else would give them the opportunity to have their voices heard again? Like I say I understand the frustration - he's an emotional bloke, but personally don't agree with how he handles it. Phil- Levine's New Album
Well, plenty changed tack from the influx of the Mod revival that I mentioned earlier. Their tastes couls have been seen as set. But on the contrary many went from listening to the tailor-made 60's soundalike records of the current Mod groups to wanting to hear more of the original music that inspired their heroes. Then from there many of them went into Northern soul If this true of that scene then why not of the Northern scene now? And as for your little jibe about my not being able to comment on the Mod revival. I can't from the inside, and indeed didn't try to. But I can comment as to what I saw as regards the Mod influx to the Northern scene in the 79/80 era. Also I have over the years spoken to several mods and ex-mods. In fact some my best friends are people who have spoken to mods too- Soul In Dublin
Thanks to you and all who have PM'ed me. Looking forward to a good weekend whatever. Phil - Levine's New Album
