  1. Although I was living up north, my first experience of what I would refer to as northern soul was at the Compass Club in Torquay in 1971 , my first holiday with the lads, when I was 18. They weren't playing just northern soul, but I realise now, they were slipping them in here and there. I came away wanting Jackie Wilson - Nothing But Blue Skies Stairsteps - Stay Close To Me Chuck Wood - Seven Days Too Long Flamingos - Boogaloo Party Olympics - Baby Do The Philly Dog So it wasn't all up north! Kev
  2. I have a line of contact to Stuart Cosgrove if anyone wants one Kev
  3. Have been collecting since1969. Have a broad collection of northern, deep, 70's, funk, jazz, blues and have many tracks in every format from 45, album track, cd, mp3 and now spotify. It isn't about the value I just love the music.
  4. I once used an iron with a tea towel when I was about 15. Got rid of the warp but melted the grooves together and made the record elliptical, so I wouldn't recommend that!
  5. I've noticed on some Lou Courtney tracks on Riverside that it says Produced by The Funk Brothers. I've not noticed them being credited as producers on other stuff especially on motown tracks. Is this the same funk brothers that were the motown musicians or is it just a generic name the producers gave themselves. Riverside label appears to be a New York label. I expect RobbK will know Kev https://www.recordsbymail.com/uploads/7-2-13-45s3/89476.JPG
  6. Found this and thought it might interest some of you. A lot were pressings but the Hi-Lites for 70p was a bargain. Not sure of the year, any guesses?
  7. It'll have to be on Big T mate, or maybe they were originals and we just didn't know it.
  8. Welcome! The Ikea version might be cheaper, but I like your design better. But being US based I think that postage on top might make it prohibitive for a lot of people here in the UK. Really like the concept and the look though!
  9. Yes and my mate John had one too. When he reads this I'm sure he'll confirm it. I've never seen a demo!
  10. This is the same one I had in the 70's and it was a boot or a legal re-issue, it wasn't hard to get.
  11. Had the pleasure of having a pint with Hamish Stuart last year in Hale. Always have the white album on my play list. How can you not like this https://youtu.be/wXiNIrUL1zw
  12. This one seems to fit into a variety of soul music tastes
  13. The Spirit of Philadelphia cd's will give you a lot of good stuff to go at. If you go to the links on amazon you can see the track listings. Happy hunting Kev https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spirit-Philadelphia-Various-Artists/dp/B0000AINFL/ref=sr_1_6?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1405366526&sr=1-6&keywords=the+spirit+of+philadelphia https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spirit-Philadelphia-2-Various-Artists/dp/B000F2C8MQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1405366526&sr=1-3&keywords=the+spirit+of+philadelphia https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spirit-Philadelphia-3-Various-Artists/dp/B004MT9E8E/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1405366526&sr=1-2&keywords=the+spirit+of+philadelphia
  14. https://detroitsoulsingles.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/washpan.html looks like 1968
  15. I have the RCA "Funky Bottom Congregation" which has Herb Ward Honest to Goodness on it, as well as many other goodies. Never seen another copy on lists although I'm sure they will be in collections somewhere.
  16. I've got the Towanda Barnes track, but I wouldn't expect it to be worth more than say £40
  17. "Hold on Help is on the way" is one of my favourites. Reminds me of Wigan
  18. You can be sure of one thing. Solicitor's fees would easily exceed the value of the record!
  19. Love the moody cinematography as well. Fantastic. Kev
  20. Blues and soul used to have a stars and stripes heading, I seem to remember!
  21. Thanks Ian, I wish I still had that cassette, I must have played it fifty times or more as they were some of my favourites, at that time. In fact, I can remember the sequence vividly, the record after Joe Matthews was Teen Turbans - Need to be loved, another record I was desperate to own! Someone's gonna tell me next that wasn't played until 1978 Anyway, I know it was played at least once, the other two also went on to be big, so I just wondered if after I stopped going to Wigan did it take off and it would appear not, but got played at other venues in the 80's Kev
  22. He was the epitome of soul music. R.I.P.

  24. You might be right about the year, I had stopped going to Wigan by '76 . It may not have been RS who played it, it might have been RW!!! but it was very early on in the evening, literally as they opened the doors. We would head straight for the balcony to get a spec and I think that was a time when the dj's would try new stuff out before the place filled up.
