  1. What's the cover for this look like? Mine came without a cover.
  2. Paul Kyser repressed them himself. As he owns the label, the masters and publishing, he's certainly within his rights to do whatever he wants with the recordings. But he's not a collector and he doesn't distinguish between "original" and "reissue". To him, they are all "original", as they were from the master tapes. But his recent pressings differ from the ~50-year old copies in that they lack the Bell Sound stamp in the run-out groove. They look and sound great, though!
  3. Are you sure? I thought reggae records were just pressed up that way.
  4. Thanks for posting this. Think there are quite a few people here in the US who would like to see it, including me.
  5. Sammy, wanna buy mine? A snip at 500!
  6. Estate? Last I heard he was alive and well. Hope he gets something out of this. Unfortunately, as is the case with many reissues, the artists themselves do not necessarily benefit much. Usually because whoever licensed the record to the reissuer cannot or will not send payments to all the parties involved.
  7. There's only one person I know in NY with the rare Junior McCants record, and I seriously doubt he'd need "money for a project". And if he did, I'm sure he'd go through a certain well-known dealer with a stellar reputation.
  8. Metrics seems like a reasonable price, and it's a record far rarer than either the Pointer Sisters or Lonnie Lester!
  9. I've just heard that Lucky Cordell, legendary DJ at WVON in Chicago has died. There was a fire in his home last week and he had been in intensive care. Here is an article about the fire. Not seen a more up-to-date one yet. https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-2-hospitalized-after-south-side-fire-20150628-story.html I was lucky to have met him a few times. He sold records to many UK dealers over the years (John Anderson and I swapped some stories about him several years ago.)
  10. No shop. just a basement full of records. email me offline: solidhit at gmail dot com
  11. There's a soul "party" at Beauty Bar (14th Street between 2nd and 3rd) on Thursday night, July 2. Not sure who the DJ's are, but it should be a fun night since many people are off work on Friday.
  12. If you're interested in buying 45s, you can always visit me in Hoboken.
  13. Ideals "Go-Go Gorilla" Satellite. Please message with condition and price.
  14. Surely, you mean Shirley Johnson. Saw it in a box all by itself at the WFMU record fair, but thought it was $900? And didn't think it was mint. But I wasn't really paying attention. Too many naughts for my wallet last week.
  15. And Del Reeves headed for the "R&B" charts. Manual typesetter probably had no idea which artists belonged in which group. But all those great records came out at the same time! Jeanette Williams, Casualeers, Rita & Tiaras, Hesitations, Sam & Irridescents, Debonaires on Solid Hit!
  16. Billboard reviewed Rita and the Tiaras in February of 1967. Actually, there're quite a few items of interest in this issue:
  17. I thought he overstated the Herb Johnson record quite a bit ("We consider this TOXAN copy a top-trophy"), given the horrible writing on the label. Shame, too, as I think a copy in better condition could have fetched quite a bit more. Overall, a lackluster group of records on auction this week.
  18. Mamie Galore seems relatively inexpensive. I sold a spare a few years ago for double that amount.
  19. Surely the Dushons is a relatively common record! There are at least a dozen copies listed at collectorsfrenzy. Cheapest on Down to Earth at $18 and the most expensive on Go Gate at $133.
  20. The Rouser label has the Fairmount release number on it. Tommy Rouse gets a credit on the label, probably for editing the sax solo. There's just something very fishy about the whole thing. My hunch is that the record sold poorly on Fairmount and when Frankie was down in the DC area performing met up with Tommy Rouse who offered to press up and distribute his own version of the record, not fully understanding whether it was legal to do so or not. Also, it abbreviates QuakerTown to QT, which I doubt the original QuakerTown producers would have approved of.
  21. Am I the only person here to believe the Rouser release of Frankie Beverly is some sort of later reissue?
  22. As flattered as I am to be mentioned here, Tim was finding great records for 20 years before I met him. And even when I was sending him records on regular basis, he still found plenty on his own. I've certainly found a few good unknown things over the years, but only a tiny fraction of the tunes Tim has unearthed.
  23. There was a kickstarter campaign on 2012 to fund the completion of this book. I made a pledge at the time, but the funding was unsuccessful. Glad to see it's been completed and is now available! Sadly, Rose Marie apparently passed just a couple of weeks ago: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/01/arts/music/rose-marie-mccoy-a-songwriter-for-rock-pop-and-jazz-legends-dies-at-92.html?ref=obituaries&_r=0 Apologies if this was already posted here.
  24. If you read closely, he's not saying Billy Thompson is one of only a handful. He's stating that Wand is a label where some releases are known only by a handful of copies... He doesn't get into the Billy Thompson-specific gibberish until after the profuse preface.
  25. Thanks very much for sending it. I've forwarded it to a friend who was looking. Thanks.
