  1. I know what you mean but if someone says to me I have "so and so" at home I accept it at face value. How do you know they haven't. You must be thinking of particular instances. Without naming names, although it would be more fun if you did, could you give us a few examples of blatant story telling. ROD
  2. What a coincidence!! I was only saying this to Nicole Kidman the other day when she popped round to see my Tomangoe's withdrawn WDJ on Ric Tic 113. She said that must be really hard and I said...... Anybody wanna be my penfriend? ROD
  3. No Pete I believe it is the Mello Souls recording under a different name with a guest vocal by Sam Dees. Again this conjecture is nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that I have a copy for sale at the moment. I can add that on this extremely rare and collectible promo copy "H&M" has been crossed out and the words "Mello Souls" have been added in genuine 1960's biro. Some people have suggested it looks like my writing but Im sure Mr. Manship and his micrometer would soon put that slur on my integrity to rest. Besides I don't own a biro as Im not allowed to have sharp objects here. ROD
  4. Pete you heartless ba***rd,how could you include the High &Mighty based as it is on a true story where a brave fisherman rescued a beautiful Cuban refugee but was unable to save her poor brother who tragically died from the fever. May have been Ebola or too much Peggy Lee but we don't get to find that out from the lyric. So heart-rending it cannot help but touch one's soul and deserves to be removed from this list immediately. I would point out that this plea has nothing to do with the fact that I have one for sale at the moment. ROD
  5. Just a couple of points. If we learn anything from the past then I'd say it will be the hardcore attendees and collectors who will keep the thing going as is evident from the 80's/90's experience. We've had influxes due to Media attention before in the 70's and it didn't last although that's not to say that some who are attracted by the music won't stay around. This duff phenomena I would suggest is more to do with kids wanting to identify with top selling album and single. Time will tell. Im also wondering which records are now irrelevant and who decides. If it's Black American danceable tracks then Im hard pressed to think of those that should now be confined to the dustbin of history. I would have thought it was more to do with the context in which you hear them. Finally it has been said that perhaps Northern clubs are off-putting for a lot of younger people but the reverse is also true. I wouldn't really want to go and be surrounded by teenagers who you just know had come out and left their dirty clothes all over the bedroom floor. It would just spoil it for me!!! ROD
  6. I seem to remember two steps forward and one to the side and back together and two steps back and repeat but it was a long time ago. It's either this stuff or it looks like there may be a Salsoul revival on it's way if another thread gets up a head of steam. I'd love it. Is it a demo? [a joke] ROD
  7. One of my faves too but I've only got it on the Trojan box set. I think it was Bazza who said on another thread this stuff is part of the past scene for some of us, and should be again. ROD

As an outsider I just don't understand this thread at all. The South Coast are 20 years behind because they don't book dj's who can play Mel Britt,Damon Fox and Eddie Parker which are all 30 years old!!!! Then Burnley is mentioned which is a very good night BUT features plenty of oldies, for example Ian's spot, FRANK FOSTER--HARLEM RUMBLE--TRI-ODE ARTHUR FREEMAN--YOU GOT ME UP TIGHT--JUMBO TOMMY DODSON III--COOPERATE--MAIN-SOUND ROSE BATTISTE--I CAN,T LEAVE YOU---THELMA EDDIE HILL--YOU GOT THE BEST OF ME--THELMA BILLY KENNEDY--SWEET THINGS--THELMA CAROL ANDERSON--I,M NOT WORRIED--WHIP ROY WRIGHT--HOOK LINE & SINKER--MICA LARRY WILLIAMS-YOU ASK FOR ONE GOOD REASON--OKEH CHARLES FARREN--YOU,VE CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE AROUND--HAWK INSPIRATIONS--YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND--MIDAS THE NEW WANDERERS--THIS MAN IN LOVE--READY THE BLUE JAYS-- (IT DEPENDS ON THE ) POINT OF VIEW--JAY DUSTY WILSON--CANT DO WITHOUT YOU--BRONSE JUDY CLAY--DO YOU THINK THATS RIGHT--EMBER KNIGHTS--I,VE GOT THE FEELING--USA MOMENTS--YOU SAID--DEEP 001 PATIENCE VALENTINE--IF YOU DONT COME--SAR HONEY & THE BEES--DYNAMITE EXPLODED--ARCTIC FRANKIE BEVERLY & THE BUTLERS--BECAUSE OF MY HEART--FAIRMOUNT LILLIE FIELDS--CHANGES--UNISSUED PIED PIPER THE HONEY BEES--LETS GET BACK TOGETHER--GARRISON MATT LUCAS--BABY YOU BETTER GO GO --KAREN MONIQUE--IF YOU LOVE ME ( SHOW ME )--MAURCI RAY POLLARD--THIS TIME--SHRINE THE CAPITALS--I CANT DENY THAT I LOVE YOU--OMEN. Great records, many of which I'd love but Ian himself will tell you they're mainly oldies. So what is this subtle difference that Steve C is getting so exercised about. Very confusing [and difficult to read] ROD
  9. Yes it was one of our plays but it was that blonde cherub with the tousled locks,Dave Raistrick who came up with it along with the Young Brothers and he kindly let us have both.To be honest I don't remember us covering it as Silhouettes but we made so little impact after dj-ing for 6 months or so that I wouldn't be surprised if Keb decided to cover it as no one probably noticed first time around. I will ask Dave though as he may recall. ROD

Sounds OK but a bit slow really for dance floor I woulda thought. Best tracks IMO on LP are "How can you lose" and "You don't have to beg me to stay" [same track as done by Tyrone]. Well worth getting LP. ROD
  11. Modernsoulsucks replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
I have the track on LP but can't post as technologically inept. Is there something you wanted to know about it? Cassette as a last resort should nobody come up with MP3. ROD
  12. Im with Dave on this. Many a time I've had a few quid to spend and began to look through a box. No prices on sleeves and I walk away. First scratched up knackered 45 I see with Mint price IMO I walk away. Maybe a bit drastic but if you go to buy something you want to see the price, and not waste your own or the seller's time. Whilst selling myself I've witnessed hours of haggling resulting in no sale. I guess some people do like to do it that way as it passes the time and you get to meet people you might not otherwise. ROD
  13. R&B rather than house I would think. ROD
  14. Steve,I don't know about "bored" with the Motown sound. I have a pretty hazy recollection of the timeline but in 70/71 I was still at school and weren't what we now call same old Motown 45s pretty hard to find then even on import. I think Elgins,Contours,Shorty Long,Earl Van Dyke etc were still the bedrock of the developing scene. Anyway Im more interested in your view of where those Prestwich modern records fit in with your idea of what constitutes modern soul. And I noticed Cunnie lurking. I think they're far removed from any notion of the Northern scene as I understand it but as I've never really been heavily involved at the modern end I wonder if the crossover/soulful independent later releases can successfully mix with "now" stuff or is it a different crowd. I have to say that I did share a flat with Mike Stephens for a while and got some insight into that part of the scene and I don't think Mike would claim to be a natural progression from Northern as his roots would be more in mainstream soul, the two-step scene, and what I think may have been quite a local interest in street soul around Manchester. ROD
  15. Whilst I'd say that the majority of what became known as Northern soul records were NOT played in the 60's,over here anyway, I would agree that things we were listening to in the first half of the 70's were not that old and taking the Mecca as an example were very new. However, modern soul means different things to different people and having read the review of the modern room at Prestwich I fail to see how it has any relevance to a large part of the Northern/Rare scene. This is not to denigrate the music at all but to point out that there is no common ground at all other than being held in the same venue and that there are some who like soul from all eras but very few. It may as well be Irish dancing in the other room as for it's influence or impact on either traditional Northern nights or more "upfront" or different venues say such as Burnley or Soulful Shack to name a couple. ROD
  16. I think it was a Richard S tune around Pendulem/Va Va time. ROD
  17. I reckon Sam should stick to disreputable dealers from now on. $150 for a boot is a hell of a lot of money!! Im pretty sure I mentioned the provenance of this 45 on an earlier thread. The Pad in Myrtle Beach is the equivalent of Wigan Casino for Beach Scene. Although we've jumped on this seller elsewhere there is a Beach boot of "Pour your little heart out" for £60 I think. Is it buyer beware or shouldn't the moderators be stepping in to ask that they be listed as boots so no potential buyers are misled. ROD
  18. It wasn't me Derek who introduced the relative merits of the Velvet Satins. However I always thought it was a great girl group 45 until I realised it was a bunch of white guys but it's still infinitely preferrable to Duffy,IMO anyway. To my ears Duffy just sounds wrong. A pastiche, a gimmick, style but no substance. Bingo though with bongos playing rhythmically yet unobtrusively in the background would appeal to all ages, ROD
  19. Anyone who had the misfortune to go to the Whalley Brass Band Club would have heard my attempts to introduce bingo to liven things up and attract the more active pensioner. Unfortunately due to backbiting politics or Geoff Buckley as he is known locally I was thwarted in this regard. Geoff was OK with bingo in between the dj sets but not so keen with bingo instead of his set. It's this dog in the manger attitude that will lead to the demise of the scene. Geoff didn't have much time for my brother-in-law's Matt Munro tribute act either which I felt would have been an introduction to NS in the same way as is being suggested for Ms Duffy. ROD
  20. I've seen little influx of youngsters to the scene and I think we are highly unlikely to as well in sufficient numbers to continue the scene...the odd venue that do have yopungsters are the exception rather than the rule and many of those do not travel. why on earth would they want to go out with 400 folk old enough to be their mums dads and in some cases grand parents I see you have completely ignored my comment about the magic lure of the bongo!! ROD
  21. You know this is a nonsense argument!! Merely pointing out that he is a fan and as a singer he fancies doing a set of covers of a guy he admires. Wether he will pull it off who knows. If you were representing Mick what would you advise? I assume Bobby will get some publicity at least out of it. You'd know more about what that is worth to an artist. I did a quick google and Bobby is 78. Is he still gigging? It is not outside the realms of possibility that Mick might earmark some percentage to Bobby from sales I suppose nor that a future tour might involve a guest spot? ROD
  22. Chaumonts here too in Macca sales /Sounds-...mp;hl=Chaumonts ROD
  23. Er, I assume you're all aware that he was buying soul records around Manchester in the 80's and that Bobby was his favourite singer, so it's not like a bolt out of the blue. Very good that,Paul. ROD
  24. 'ere we go again!!! What this scene needs is loads of young people aged 16 upwards with I assume from other ramblings on this site a more upfront contempory music content like House say. sorry make that soulful House. It's delusional!! The way forward is the bongo. "The only down side of some of the spot's in the modern room and house of soul was the over use of the live percussion...... it's great for a one hour set with someone like Snowboy as he works with the guy on percussion well ..... But it seemed over used IMHO..... I wanted to hear Jamie mix the chooons and all I could hear was the bongos!" The above is from the Prestatyn thread. I have seen live percussion used in the odd student/funk club back in early 90's but first time ever seen it in relation to "Northern", if somewhat tenuous in that it was in the modern room. ROD
  25. Still taller and better looking than you thank you and Im sure you''re right with that observation about how the Mecca was billed early on in say 71/72. No idea when Godin coined that term but Im with Barney and thinking of my first forays into NS which were around '69. Not wishing to be pedantic or get involved in semantics but I'd say difference in meaning in "rare" soul with Tony Jebb or whoever and " the "rare soul" scene now referred to. What that subtle difference is.... ROD
