Lisa Stansfield
Blimey......don't start the 8-3-1 debate!! As much as I like Lisa, that cut is a real low point for the modern scene IMHO! Cheers, Mark R

No legitimate vinyl on this I'm afraid. .....not even a boot as far as I'm aware. .......but what a great tune! :-)) Don't anyone take this the wrong way, and understand it's just me being passionate. ......but please support music as good as this on whatever format necessary. It's a crazy world where we deprive ourselves of brilliance based on it not being available on vinyl, though I totally empathise with that being a preferred format Cheers, Mark R

You really felt the need to fast-forward through Charlie Wilson singing "There Goes My Baby"? What a voice and what a track!! Sorry, can't find the live footage from Jools Holland's show.............Charlie was the standout power-house voice on the show................Lisa was and always is great though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iV8Rk_ocQY Cheers, Mark R

Another Attempt To Cross The Generations
I blame technology and the ability for anybody to have a dabble. I curse it weekly on Traxsource as I trawl a whole 15 ish pages of releases (each page with 30 releases on and most of them with multiple mixes/tracks = lots of effort!). It's good in the right hands but there are so many people producing music which I think "who is this made for/who listens to this sh!t" and what's worse is the really good producers/editors/remixers by and large appear to have taken a back seat. Anybody's free to have a go but I wish they would step back and realise they have little to offer and "do one". This isn't particularly directed at the guy that did this..........I don't like it, but it's prompted me to state a general observation of mine. Cheers, Mark R

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
Good mic technique is essential for a NS DJ in my book......and in my experience no-one comes close to Guy Hennigan for introducing those hard-hitting raw 60's tunes......it just fits with the music perfectly! Cheers, Mark R

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
And this brings me back to my point: isn't that because he has the records, which is ultimately important for this scene, rather than having to be great technically (house music), or having a great personality (mobile DJ's)...........incidentally, he might well have both the latter qualities too, I wouldn't know! Cheers, Mark R

Whats The Difference Between A Good Dj And A Great Dj?
A lot depends on the context.........in other words which scene, and what are it's driving factors? Rare records? Mixing? .....etc So it's more complicated than it might seem unless you put it into/consider the context. Cheers, Mark R

The Motown 7S Box Set: Rare And Unused
I am genuinely bemused when I read things like this......why shouldn't an original CD be worth money like an original vinyl? The copying thing is irrelevant as these days for a few quid, if you already have a pc which most do, it's as easy to copy vinyl.....either way you no longer have an original! ! I can understand vinyl being a preference but the notion that a CD can't be collectible makes me smile. Cheers, Mark R

The Motown 7S Box Set: Rare And Unused
Sounds more likely Steve, well documented as the limited run of 1000 which then went for £100 a copy. I missed it then so was glad when Universal recently saw fit to do a general release. Cheers, Mark R

The Motown 7S Box Set: Rare And Unused
I know you'll say I shouldn't be naive, and actually I'm not, but WTF is all this buying multiple copies? It was great to read that Mark Bicknell resisted buying multiple copies.....restored my faith........and then I scrolled down ro read of people with 6 copies!! Not such a soul family after all eh? Let your fecking mates on here buy and enjoy it for Christs sake. Same happens on record store day.......multiple copies of the Gregory Porter etc and then eBay at £50.....I just bought one and was happy to let other people enjoy it. One of the bad sides of this scene for me....... Cheers, Mark R

Essential 12"s
Great choices fella............in the weekly quest for the best new releases, I'll never forget being completely floored by the intro to Kimiesha Holmes.......a real fave of mine to this day on Tony Humphries excellent, now defunkt Yellorange label. And Jasper St. Company was one of the records responsible for me really taking notice of the genre seriously.........it caught my ear when I heard it on Solar Radio when it first came back as a legal station, and I've been poor ever since! LOL Pieces of class with great personal memories attached to them for me, so thanks for posting these great choices fella! Cheers, Mark R

Solo Blowin My Mind
Yes, but you seem to be saying this from the NS bubble............Steve Hobbs raved over Drizabone as a W/L promo in Blues & Soul, which was still a major publication at the time. So it and it's like hardly went unnoticed. I think the "Soul Scene" was well onto it, and it was the "Northern/Rare Soul Scene" that got interested later down the line.............probably largely because by then you couldn't get it..........it seems that's a big part of how the wheels turn for some, even on things that aren't that rare!! Cheers, Mark R

Solo Blowin My Mind
Great CD Jock, and their 2nd CD has some great moments too........"Nights Like This" was quite popular........this was all around the time of Fleetwood Weekender and the original Modern Room. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqx6rY8OyWA Hope you're well pal......looks like last weekend was a blast.......would love to try and make it next year. Cheers, Mark R

Mind And Matter Performance
We've talked on here before about the involvement of Jimmy Jam (Flyte Tyme) in M&M, who progressed onto a whole different level. .... https://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/17655/1/jimmy-jams-lost-disco-soul-recordings Great stuff.....everyday's a school day! Cheers, Mark R
