Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
Indeed so - The takes could be identical, the fact that there are different "Q" and "H-LI" reference numbers may be no more than a miniscule change in leveling, and the date could just be the date the labels were typed (eg start on Thursday evening, go home, come back Friday morning and finish yesterdays work off) Cheers Mick

Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
I can't remember if I had a sound file at the time - Been looking and can't find one on this PC, but It could be on another drive somewhere. From what I remember, the two takes on Jan 29 were identical to each other (I was told this, rather than working it out from audio files). As to whether these were different from Jan 28 I can't remember if I ever worked that out. Cheers Mick

Marvin Gaye Lonely Lover
Just seeing the recording date for MG / LL, made me think of this. First Mixdown - Jan 28 1965 (Hope you're keeping it safe Phil !!!) Second Mixdown - Jan 29 1965 - (Never had this one, - was in the process of buying this about 5 years ago, it but for some reason the seller just stopped communication in the middle) Would have been nice to have had both side by side. Cheers Mick

Johnnie Taylor - Friday Night - White Demo ?
Thanks for checking. That's interesting, so "Steal Away" seems to have been mastered twice. SM-00360 and then SM-00364 Non of which helps Eddyw of course, but solved my little anomaly. Cheers Mick

Johnnie Taylor - Friday Night - White Demo ?
I have a test pressing of it, but don't think there will be a white demo, as it was a B side. Aside from that, one thing I have just noticed is the matrix for the "Steal Away" label on its promotion and release says SM 00364. The test press I have has "Steal Away" as SM 00360. The "Friday Night" matrix is unchanged - SM 00361 - making it the same as the printed labels for it's release. I dont have a release so I can't check, but wondered if the "Steal Away" release also has the original SM 00360 matrix in the runout. This would them line up with it being the A side, and promoted as as such, and the demo / release SM 00364 would be a simple typing error. Anyone got one to hand to check ? Cheers Mick

Advert With Northern Tune?
A fair few month ago there was a advert (I'm sure it was also for an airline, but might be mistaken) that used "I Get the Sweetest Feeling". Big deal, you say, except the version used was Erma Franklin, which was a refreshing change from Jackie or some generic male copycat used forever Thinking about it, it was probably about 12 months or more back now. Cheers Mick

Nolan Chance - Bunky
That's the copy I bought. These two Nolan Chance / Bunky records predate the label listings above. There was no official "bunky" label at that time, I think this was more like Bill Sheppard putting his own name on the records, rather than any attempt at an official label. Soon after these two, he would go one step further and put the "Bunky's Pick" logo on various records. Cheers Mick

Nolan Chance - Bunky
Here's something you don't see everyday. A couple of years ago a copy of the the famed Bunky release of Nolan Chance "Just Like The Weather" turned up in Australia. Soon the information and image surrounding this release found its way into the public domain and now everyone has seen what this looks like. Exactly like the Constellation demo, but with two noticable differences, the name Bunky replaces Constellation, and the "Disc Jockey Advance Sample - Not For Sale" disappears. Everything else is identical, even down to the Constellation release number of C-161. The vinyl is identical, and apparently ran off at the same time, just with these modified labels interspersed with the standard Constellation labels. I understand the reason for this records existence was a Bill "Bunky" Sheppard extra promotion in trying to get the record "out there". Now I thought that was the end of the story. Well maybe it is, but it isn't the beginning. The same identical variations to those above found their way to Nolan's earlier release on C-144 - "If He Makes You" / "She's Gone". I can't seem to find anything out about it, just wondered if anyone out there had ever heard of it. It also begs a question about other Constellation / Bunky productions. Could releases of, for example, Gene Chandler exist on Bunky, still waiting to be found somewhere. Anyway, just thought I'd post this as it may be of interest to some of you, or if it's old hat then apologies for wasting your time. Here's some pictures. Cheers Mick

Sidney Barnes Orch
Here's a copy I had around the time of it's scheduled release. Just dug it out for scans I remember that auction and was surprised to hear there was only two copies. Is that right though, or are there a dozen or so out there ? Cheers Mick

Is This The Most Expensive U.k Soul Single
Hello Gilly, hope you're well. Was this the white issue of Queen Of Fools" ? Yes, I did get one from you now I think of it - Supposed to be another colour label variation too (Pink ?) from a thread on here a couple of years ago. Never seen one in the flesh though, and I could be mistaken too. Cheers Mick

Is This The Most Expensive U.k Soul Single
The label is the light blue paper label as used for the 70's reissue of Ramsey Lewis 6145 004 It is a mispress of Wade in the water only, using the master for Marlena Shaw, "let's WITW" one one side and the standard Ain't That Pecuilar by Ramsey on the flip. At the time I held it in my hand, I simply couldn't read the matrix/ stampers, but I understand the stamper on the A side actually reads 6145 005, which was scheduled for Marlena but never got released. I came about it by accident, when a guy had it in his box and told be what it was. I offered him £500 on the spot, but he ended up telling JM about it and he got just over £600 on one of his auctions about 6 months later. Before JM got to list it, I put up a want for it on this site, unfortunately I had to be subtle in asking what I was asking for, as, at that point, only someone who actually had it at would know about it. (short of buying every loose copy from junk shops, boxes at venues, internet, the world etc. on the off chance. Which would be an expensive and impossible task.) I must admit, since JM auctioned it, I assumed the "cat was out of the bag" so to speak, but it would appear knowledge of this 45 had escaped most people. I have no idea who won that copy, but in responce to the "want" I put up prior to that, I did get one response with an offer of a poor condition one for either £35 or £65 (can't remember which) but was told that both sided were just about unplayable with background noise and multiple skips, and the A side label had been heavily overwritten with "Marlena Shaw" "Let's" and "Vocal", and credit's refering to Ramsey were obliterated. I turned it down, but have proved to myself that copies are out there as a guarded enquiry did turn another copy, but those who own it are probably unaware of it, as it is not always a record people play. Dealers get 'em in, then move 'em on without ever turning on the deck. Cheers Mick

Come On Now Which Ones The Rarest
Probably Darrell Banks is the rarest, although not much in it - neither are really rare are they

Is This The Most Expensive U.k Soul Single
The Marlena Shaw - Wade In the Water - on UK Chess is quite rare. It was pressed up using Ramsey Lewis labels in the early 70's. I only know of two, and one of those is rough, but there may be others. Cheers Mick

Volumes - Ain't Gonna Give You Up
This can be taken with a pinch of salt though. If you look at the sleeve notes on the Deon Jackson LP SS-8020 from exactly the same time, both "Hard To Get A Thing Called Love" and its flipside "When Your Love Is Gone" are both deemed "Previously Unreleased". Which is just wrong. Cheers Mick Damn - find this out and eight others post while I'm typing

The Bootleg "everybody" Sells As An Original
The Cream red is indeed original, and has never been booted in this colour variation. The 70's white demo boot does get listed as original consistently, and people buy them consistently, even though they stand out a mile. Here's the latest example priced at £145 ... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/you-dont-love-me-where-were-you-the-epitome-of-sound-on-sandbag-/221412061009 However to say they are identical apart from the mastering and the numbers under the label, is a bit much to say the least. There are multiple threads about this record with images etc, to enable anyone to identify orig or boot from any given image, or 50 yards across the room, they are SO different. Cheers Mick

Beres Hammond - Lp Track
Thanks Mark, after a bit of research I see it is also on Brotherhood Music - seems unclear which has the dance version of it though. Is the eBay one on Water Lilly ? (I can't make it out from the description or image). I could buy a Brotherhood copy but am unsure of the version on that release, might end up with the wrong one. Cheers Mick

Beres Hammond - Lp Track
Thanks Ismael, Yes, that is it ! I was listening to a slow version of it on You Tube and dismissed it this afternoon, but found another version that is indeed the correct one. Thanks for your help - case closed. Cheers Mick
