  1. Why would I tell you what you shouldn't do? Personally I like to play original records when I'm invited to play a few, what anyone else plays is up to them, I don't really give a flying one, lifes to short, it's a night out, Thanks for the warning though
  2. Agreed, and taking the said original record, putting a completely different label on it, giving the track a completely different title and hoodwinking anybody that might be interested that it's a completely different artist isn't for the benefit of the individual, often the 'real' artist would rather keep their identity a secret,
  3. Why is it usually a debate of one extreme to another? Not all oldies sets are unimaginative, lazy and played off in the main boots. Some rare and underplayed sets are as dull as fukcin dishwater, And vice versa
  4. That could prove easier said then done Mike, as soon as a name/artist is posted there will be an 'anorak' that heard the said artists album track played in Oswaldtwistle bowling hut in May '72 or similar,

Great post Rob! I go way back to the Bolton Moathouse nights before Prestwich with Terry and Lynne, which were equally as successful though more club soul nights rather than Northern, Didn't we have some great nights at the Longfield suite? Think I missed 2 nights from start to finish, though it did help it being about 6 miles down the road, and though myself and Terry were/are good mates, him asking me to play there was always special, the venue was so precious to him he wouldnt just let anyone loose behind those decks, The man himself was indeed the complete DJ, as you say Rob, could read a dance floor like no-one else, welcomed requests, showed bags of enthusiasm toward a new spin before playing it, so much so it was half accepted before it was heard, re-activated almost single handedly lots of forgotten tunes and broke a few himself, and had a collection to die for, And introduced me to a very nice bloke I knew for years as 'Birmingham Bob'

As far as I'm aware Winnie, he still is

Terry's chosen profession for many a year was car trimming (classic/vintage) he had a unit before his workshop in the garden, then a few years ago he saw potential in the art deco furniture game, this meant most of his weekends were taken up away from NS, never looked back,
  8. Hi dogstoat, not sure why you quoted me, however, if you read all my comments you will see I have no problem whatsoever with playlists, I merely stated an opinion as to why some (not all) state request (as per topic) on some selections, and that I personally don't do playlists, which as far as I am aware is up to me, That was before I looked at it from your angle, so from now on when asked to take a box anywhere I will endeavour to either take a notebook or not have a drink to enable me to compile a playlist sometime later, then I will find the time to type it all out with my very slow 1 finger typing style, just so those that couldn't be arsed for a decade or 3 can check out what they might have missed (though there won't be too much in most of my sets ), apologies for any inconsideration on my part Best Pete
  9. Phil I could list numerous reasons why I don't do playlists, time and memory would be a good start, But if truth be known I just can't be arsed, no preciousness or insecurity whatsoever, to each his own and all that, Oh and I only own crap records
  10. very good Paul, i don't/won't do playlists but thats me, thats not to say nobody should, I enjoy browsing playlists to try and get an idea of what the said venue is about, What I am not interested in is if a tune was a request, if it was a demo or an issue and if it just happened to be on it's rarest label, Like I said in a previous post, show me a playlist where the requests are the rarest/highest valued selections on the list, just an observation, some playlists are just that, playlists, others are littered with disclaimers, get out of jail free cards and are just missing the 'aren't I a clever boy, PM to book me' footnote,
  11. I have yet to see a playlist littered with readily available 45's and one selection of a 4 figure value with 'request' written alongside it
  12. Folk putting 'request' alongside a selection on a playlist are doing so because if it's less than a 3 figure value it kinda spoils the whole cock waving excersise, though stating it was the rarer issue/demo can go some way to ease the situation, and if it's on the rarer of 2 or more labels then all bases are covered
  13. Smudge.........was this before or after the war?
  14. Another very subjective thread, one persons oldie is another persons newie, so similarly one persons ATB could be anothers Oldies event, Just another what is Modern/crossover/RnB kinda question, there has been a few differing opinions just on this thread as to what is perceived as ATB,

Thought so, we used to often finish with it just down the road at the lesser known nights at Bolton Anglers around the same time, great tune, and I do tend to associate it with Bob,

Seem to remember it being a regular ender for Bob Hinsley at the Ritz nighters, late 90's onwards, then again he could have just finished with it the once and it's just stuck

  18. A routine Farnworth night out then Brent, as you know this was a tad before my time, but this is the first I have known about who the villain of the piece was, assuming I have who it is correct, was he into northern or there purely as an oppurtunist? Or both? Either way he didn't learn much from it,
  19. Nice one Godz, always good fun, well done
