Hi. We haven't done an Empire State Soul Club night since 2001, unfortunately. The Subway Soul Club is going strong, as is Honky and Pomonkey's monthly 'Dig Deeper' night, featuring a live act plus some of the best, rarest 45s in the world. SELF-PROMOTION ALERT! I DJ every Wednesday night in a dumpy little bar called Botanica, at 47 East Houston Street in Manhattan, from 10 o'clock till 2 or 3 in the morning. It's more a drink-and-listen-and-socialize thing than a dance party, though people have been dancing a bit lately now that the friggin anti-dancing law is seemingly no longer being enforced. I play across-the-board soul 45s, late-50s to mid-70s, including R&B, blues, deep soul, sweet soul, gospel, funk, and, yes, 'northern.' I've been doing this night for 14 years, and in that time it has been, uh, graced by the presence of Keb, Butch, Guy, Randy Cozens, Tim B., John M., Ian W., and plenty of others. So is the Tamla Motown version the one that you all "grew up" with? The vocal phrasing is pretty different from the one I'm used to hearing on U.S. radio and on my U.S. 45 (and albums)...right from the start, Smokey goes down instead of up and up instead of down (on "fool" and "public", if you know what I mean....Or is it only the Spanish 45 that has this vocal take?

Well, I have a copy. I've never seen another one. Has someone been playing it? I think it's great blue-eyed soul, and I wouldn't sell it.

Ah, you beat me to Stu Gardner in "Point Blank"! Cool nightclub scene. Jim Jarmusch's "Mystery Train" has Rufus Thomas, Marvelle Thomas, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins in bit parts. TV's "The Rockford Files" has Isaac Hayes in a recurring role; in one episode, he's trying to manage a struggling nightclub singer played by Dionne Warwick...and there are even some 45s involved in the plot!

Just found it yesterday: Jeanette Nellis, Let's Get Together/Wait (Chess 1855) It's from 1963, according to the discography. Two pretty excellent early soul/R&B sides. Not completely mind-blowing, but very solid; what IS mind-blowing is that a very good Chess 45 could be so seemingly obscure. Google brings up the Chess discography and that's it. No playlists, no sales sites, no compilations, no nothing. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks, M
