HI BARRY, YOU'VE ONLY HAD A FEW MATE? I PROPOSE A RECOUNT!!!! Seriously though a great post. This should get people talking. I really dont think you can blame any one section of people be it the dj's or the dancefloor. It is clear that the main reason for the lack of quality soul being introduced to your ears in your early formative years of what is regarded as the northern soul scene, was the trait and sheer demand for uptempo stomping DANCE music. This was driven by the floor, the dj's and collectors alike. So bandage your wrists and don the boxing gloves as you have plenty of people to take to task for starving you of the quality soul that you so desire :g: . Happy new year pal and keep posting regards ROY

Soul In The Sun November 2012 Tenerife
SOULCENTRAL replied to ImberBoy's topic in All About the SOUL
HI SIMON, Got to take exception with your gripe regarding critisism of Eddy as nothing could be further from the truth. As in his reply he was there on the afternoon and the evening, as were half a dozen other "seasoned" Sunners who help where required on the day and during the week. I wont berate you for your opinion as you have already made your apologies. As you will appreciate the sheer number of people who go to Soul in the Sun makes it difficult for Eddy to get around to everyone in attendance and say hello, although believe me he really does make the effort. I do understand why your group as SIS "virgins" was left with the impression that the first day felt like it was a little cliquey within the venue and that you were left to wander around the venue. However it takes two to tango so to speak. What you have to remember is that many people have been to Soul in the Sun in previous years and for them, the first day is usually meeting old friends again and catching up. Also it is always good as newbies to get your bearings and just settle and unwind after the travelling rather than some stranger being in your face and extolling the virtues of the holiday. Hopefully you will have made many new friends during the course of the holiday as that is always a great aspect of Soul in the Sun and you have returned home with many happy memories. I have only missed one SIS in some thirteen years of going and from knowing only a handful of people on my first visit, i now know hundreds and many of which i can call good friends. It is good to read that you will be going back next november which shows that overall your holiday experience was good even though the weather did its best not to play fair!. Remember next time to attend the daytime sessions as they are great and musically very different from the night time. regards ROY (LCSC Original) -
Record Prices - Is It Me Or Have They Gone Mad?
SOULCENTRAL replied to paultp's topic in Look At Your Box
HI PAUL, Much of what you are saying is very true to form as what e-bay is about at the moment. Butch seems to have the right angle on this one with his informed opinion. AND YES..........You are a tight Yorkshireman like all the others-myself included...LOL ROY -
HI PETE, Malc is still around, however he does not post anymore on here due to all the polotics and back biting that goes on. He has had some pretty terse comments to some of his past postings even though the majority were pretty much tounge in cheek. He occasionally visits the Leeds Central and as Bri Pinch has mentioned still resides in yorkshire. ROY

HI BARRY, Have a little recollection of my own from years gone by from the old Torch days although not quite as scary as your adventure. Back in mid 72 we got back from a great nite at the Torch. Got home just in time to play for my local footy team. The lads were amazed i wasn't knackered after being to an all nighter and travelling home :shhh: Any way we were 3-0 up and i was playing well but still had the soul sounds from the previous nite wizzing round the head. Just remember Frankie Beverly- If thats what you wanted, when whack and crack. Got hit good style by one of the oppdsition and ended up with a broken leg . Fast forward a week and me and a mate are stood at the start of the M62 in Leeds thumbing a lift to the Torch, him with two bags at his side and me on crutches with a full plaster pot right up to the nuts!. After an hour an a half got a lift to Salford where the M62 finished, then hitched through Sale and Altringham eventually to Knutsford services where we arrived about 11-30. Got a lift from some guys from Newton who were travelling down and eventually arrived at the Torch about 12-30am. As soon as we were in the crutches got slung in a corner and we hit the dance floor. What a great night and the leg felt good due to Pain killers consumed some time earlier. Danced the night away, got my crutches and blagged a lift back to Bradford with just a short journey home by bus, Result. Went to bed about 1 in the morning only to wake up at 6 in absolute agony with the leg!. Rushed down to casualty at Lgi to be met by a rather disgruntled doctor and a "plaster" nurse with a face like thunder. What the bloody hell have you been doing with this pot she barked. There is no foot plate left in it and its black and wet through( the torch bogs). The end result was i was in traction for two weeks, in pot for six, and got the scarbro warning as to what would happen if i came back again in the same state again. Needless to say i did not see the inside of theTorch for well over two months and the only compensation was gettin pain killers on prescription, although not sure they were exactly the ones i would have wanted :D regards ROY.

HI BARRY, Great story that one. I think the group 10cc made a song that epitomises your adventure............." The things we do for love" ROY

A Couple Of Nice Bits Just Acquired, Well I Like 'em
SOULCENTRAL replied to Northern Soul Uk's topic in Look At Your Box
HI STEVE, SOME NICE OLD TUNES THERE AND FOR THE CONDITION NOT A BAD PRICE EITHER. You say that these were bargains but how can that be when you have always considered a bargain anything less then a tenner!!!!!! LOL. ROY -
Although the original poster mentions the venue at which he heard Carl Dene play the point of his posting was to sing the praises of the dj and not the venue. The poster also titles his post Farmer Carl and does not reference the club in his title and does not give the club where Carl appeared that evening a lookback appraisal, therefore i dont believe the post should be in lookbacks. regards ROY

50 Key Landmark Moments In Northern Soul History
SOULCENTRAL replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
MIKE, A really great topic which stirs all sorts of memories and gives plenty of food for thought about the historical value of the soul scene to the way the music has shaped the lives of many. Although not aware of exact dates the one defining style of soul event has been the soul weekenders. From the early days of some of these being predominently "Northern Classic" events they have evolved over time to offer multiple genres of soul music literally under one very large roof and also provided the oppurtunity for soul fans too see and listen live to the soul artists that inspired soul fans in their younger years. The likes of Fleetwood and Prestatyn spring to mind as the best and without these i would not have had the wider appreciation of soul music that i now have and these two events have changed my perception of soul music forever. Although quite often frowned upon on this site, not all merchandising is bad. If the guy as stated was producing one offs as a result of individuals sending in whatever photographs they would like on a personal level, then it is hardly mass marketing. But then again i am sure the requests will be coming in for; "Can you do one with a fist and keep the faith around the edge" lol. ROY

If there were only 500 made then surley for other soul clubs that had a badge made, any less than 500 would make them rarer!!!!!. The Central in Leeds i believe only had about 150 badges made so what would that make them worth?. That is in a badge collectors opinion of course. ROY
-
Rod, Was not directing my post against your reply. It was in response to some earlier posts on page one which seemed to tarnish all people who aline themselves with particular genres, with the same brush. My point was that everyone is individual and as such there will always be divided opinion and diverse views on the emotive subject that is soul. ROY

HI MATT, There is also another issue here and that is the aspect of wether the dj plays the record on OVO just because it is as rare as rocking horse sh*t and would cost you 3 months salary to buy. Attended a rare and underplayed event last year at which two of the guests on the night were regarded as being in the top 5 in the country, regularly appearing at the top nighters. I had not heard about 90% of the records they played but my dissapointment was evident in the fact that some of what was played was absolute dross but these dj's extolled the virtues of the records courtesy of the rarity and value of the records. which is bullshit and an insult to my intelligence. The saving grace of the evening was the fact that the third dj of the evening came on and blew me away with what he played and again i probably knew only about 80% of what was on offer, that man was Arthur Fenn!. That evening i expected to listen to OVO and i knew that would be the case, but listening to dross being portrayed as great soul music because of its rarity and value, i did not expect. But then again its down to my own personal choice! ROY
-
EXACTLY THAT! It is always a question of taste. That is personal taste of the individual concerned......... That persons taste in; Music Genre Venue DJs Dress sense etc. ROY
-
HI RUSS, There does not relly need to be a winner in all this!. I appreciate you are passionate about your own personal genre of music and the venues at which it is played, but the bottom line is each to their own and be happy with it( as Brett says). An earlier post quoted "nostalgia northern nights" as an 80% fancy dress night which i think is well overboard although the people who dress a la 1976 and onwards do look somewhat ridiculous, although again each to their own. Regretfully the rare and underplayed element of the soul scene at this moment in time is well in the minority and will stay that way for some time to come as numbers are decreasing in attendance. There are not too many sounds played here that do eventually find there way, and become established, at mainstream classic northern nights. Personally i like all elements that make up the soul scene (with the exception of r&b). Most classic northern nights are frequented by people who are there for their love of dancing ,the music and social gathering and they are not too bothered about which medium delivers that package. Rare and underplayed, 70s and crossover are 99% OVO and that will be set in stone for years to come and the people visiting these venues are avid OVO punters, record collectors etc. Will the soul scene as we know it implode?, possibly but you can feel something stirring. Will there be a next generation waiting in the wings?,they are already there but are getting p*ss*ed off with not getting a chance to play at some of the R & U events so are doing their own thing. A solution would be for all promotors to insist on OVO at their events. This would cut down the number of classic northern nights down by about 80% but we all know this just is not going to happen. ROY
-
HI CHALKS, To be honest i am not that knowledgeable to be able to distinguish between a boot and the original in relation to most vinyl although some are easy to define. Can't understand why many ordinary punters would be that bothered and why the promoter in the camera scenario thought it would make the slightest difference :g: . As you say, who could actually tell ????. ROY
-
Exactly Pete, I thought for the majority of people attending soul events it was all about the music!!!!!!!!!!. Although i would not want this thread to degenerate (again!) into an OVO versus Pressings versus CDs etc, etc. Still an absolutely fantastic classic SOUL tune regardless of what medium it is heard on and fair play to the person who bought the record, i hope they get many hours of pleasure from playing it. ROY
