What Soul Record Reminds You Of Who
Defo one of Gaz's Kirst Another three that always remind me of him: 1. Lovers - without a doubt (remember him crawling (literally) up to the decks to ask Ian to play it at the Wilton), 2. Billy Arnell - tough Girl aka "Ginger's new Mick McManus cover up" "It's so sh*te Billy Arnell insisted on it being covered-up" - priceless! 3. Epsilons - mad at the world (coz he had written it in about 12" high letters on his kitchen wall ) Haven't seen Gaz for ages; I do miss him calling for me on a Sunday with his Woolworth's kids cricket set under his arm. The conversation usually went: "fancy a game? Can't mate, my teas ready. Ok, see you next week" See you soon hon x

When Is Soul Not Soul?
I think you can call it what you like. 'Northern soul' in it's broadest sense e.g. Wheel - Torch - Wigan - Stafford - Lifeline etc etc etc represents an almost evolutionary process whereby, inevitably, new things were found and played and became accepted. The term 'NS', whilst largely irrelevant to me personally, encompasses a whole range of genres, it's a broad church for sure - which is a great thing too IMHO. It has come to matter less and less to me what it's referred to and by whom - which is another factor of course; we will all have a differing taste depending on where we've been, what we heard and when etc. Music is funny like that I think and NS in particular because, almost by definition, it is such an integral part of our lives and has been for years and years that it is part of who we are, both individually and collectively. (Hmmm, the sociologists might have something to say about the collectivity angle e.g. how fragmented 'scenes' inevitably become within an increasingly fragmented society ... there's a PhD in there for any Bergerian sociologists amongst you ... ... but let's not go there eh... ... ) I'd suggest that, in some cases, we might attach more weight to a particular record because of the memories it carries with it, not totally regardless of but perhaps with less onus being placed on the actual 'quality' / stereotypical soulfulness of the record? In the final analysis, as long as folk can shuffle about to it and so long as it does that funny thing to your insides when you hear it you're not far away I reckon That's what 'soul' means to me anyway for what it's worth.

Cheep Stormers & Best Kept Secrets
Again, no secrets here bud and not necessarily stormers or rnb (apart from that though they all fit your bill exactly ). Been having a bit of a rummage and while 99% of the folk on here will probably know 99% of these I think they're all great cheap records which, for whatever reason, I'm as guilty as anyone of never seeming to play anymore : Garnet Mimms - prove it to me Reflections - out of the picture Emotions - do this for me No No Starr - swing your love my way Betty Everett - claim on you Betty Lavette - stand up like a man (can't find mine so if anyone has a spare ...) Willie Harper - but I couldn't Fred Hughes - don't let me down (Ashamed to say I'd forgotten how awesome this is!) Major Lance - since I lost my baby's love Joe & George - no one loves you La Shell & Shelletts - you better check yourself Intruders - check yourself Betty Everett - too hot to hold Players - get right Wade & Jamie - don't put off til tomorrow Bobby Bland - yield not to temptation Joe Simon - just like yesterday Summits - sophisticated lady Ballads - keep the faith Soul Bros Inc - all the time Jimmy Norman - family tree Jimmy Holliday - new breed How much is Tammy Wayne these days? Still absolutely blows me away!!!! Finally, just give Banksie a ring or PM, he'll have boatloads I suspect Happy hunting

Its Hard To Impress A Woman If You Don't Know Her
As I said mate, it's a no brainer: bit of motown and a couple of modern / disco type things - that's all you need to know sweets. (Buy me a pint next time you see me and we'll call it quits)
-
Its Hard To Impress A Woman If You Don't Know Her
Ged bang a load of motown on it with a smattering of modern / disco type things and tell your mate - whilst relying on pub landlord-esque philosophizin - to utter the immortal words: "that's all you need to know sweets." I do understand your predicament though. When I first met my missus I tried the "I'm a soulie, its my life and therefore you too must love and embrace it" routine (which, as you well know, was fairly cutting edge in Barrow in the 1980s!). "Listen to this tape, you'll like it, particularly the Tony Middleton (spanish maiden) track; what with it's latin influence you girls are sure to love it". Eighteen years of marriage later she still tells me how much she hates it and has done "ever since you did me that bloody tape" So, come to think of it, your load is lighter because even if it's shite it won't matter in the short term. However, the price for getting it wrong will be paid in full from here to eternity. No pressure then ...
