Saturday Night Radio
Just been flicking between The Motown show on Smooth and Craig Charles Funk 'n Soul show on Radio 6. Craig plays Marvin's "This love starved Heart", I turn over and the same track comes on Smooth! Thought this only happened at venues lol - great stuff though, especially on Smooth - Fantastic 4, Velvelettes etc.... Mark C

How Long....? Just For Fun
Served my apprenticeship at the East Anglian Soul Club in 79/80 and been going pretty much continuously ever since. Oh, and did two Caisters and Ministry of Sound when they had a soul room! Mark C

Cover Ups : What Was The
Carl Fortnum still calls Bobby Valentin "Rex Garvin" (and there's a few others he still calls under the c/up name!!) Mark C

All-time Fave Dancer
I remember Mark well from my days at the East Anglian Soul Club etc. Think he moved up north. Met a girl called Andrea from Nuremberg at Bamberg who wanted to say "Hi" to Mark if anyone knows him and can pass the message on. Mark C

Last Middleton Allnighter
I think this will be a good move. Being a "main room" person I found the new room at Middleton too cramped and had a laminate, not wooden, floor. Went to the Wigan Niter last month and had an excellent time. I heard that the record dealers felt out of it on the new balcony but the set up at Wigan is just perfect. Looking forward to July already! Mark C

Tunes You Dont Like
Holly St James - "That's not Soul" Mark C Whoops - put it in twice. But should be Holly S(hi)t James. Guess this is what you would call "Northern" cos it's a dancer, clapper etc - and plenty more where that came from!!

On a similar note Maark, I wonder if someone could organise a weekender in Hartlepool to coincide with the visit of Norwich City next season Mark C

Best Dance Floor @ Northern Soul Venue ?
I'll second that - but whenever I've been there this guy who's always dressed in white totally covers the side of the dance floor in talc (actually could cover himself in talc first) - totally not needed. And why do people pour talc on a certain area and then fook off somewhere else to dance??!! Mark C

How Many Nighter Venues Have There Been ?
Went to a nighter in the 80s at the Gildenburgh Suite (think that was the name), at the Wirrina in Peterborough run by the St Ives lads. Nothing to do with the main venue or original promoter so technically have I come up with another one? Mark C

Tenerife Soul
What a shame - we had a fantastic time in there Spring 2005. Will never forget the Soul Quiz, little did we know when we entered that Nick Borst and his crew were behind us and won with the "Who originally sang Rock the Boat" question (Hues Corporation) Good luck for the future, Steve Mark C

Speaking The Unspeakable - Soul Blind Spots

Early 80,s
Went to Morecambe on the train from Norwich once. Two lads got on near Manchester and looked like Soulies but were speaking in Welsh. Suddenly one of them said the words "John Anderson" and carried on in Welsh so we realised that they were also going to the Nighter! Mark C

100 Club
Remember Drummonds well - run by Jon Buck (or Don Cluck as we called him - unknowlingly - at the time) During the 1990 World Cup we went to watch the Italy v Ireland game downstairs. Can't remember the score but was probably put off when an innocent looking chap was accosted by a stripagram and, yes, she did get them all off! Mark C

Youngest Person To D.j At The 100 Club
Would have been around 1990 - I asked Ady to give him a spot. Incidentally, I arrived at the 100 one night to be met by Ady who'd tried to phone me to bring a box down. Ian Clark had to pull out last minute due to a bereavement. Explained to Ady had I got the call I would have said no anyway as I don't own any records! Pleased to say Clarkie was out and about (as a punter) in Norwich recently, danced all night and even managed to do a back drop!! Mark C

The Wigan Decks
Definitely saw a picture of the three deck system which I thought was the original set up. Quote underneath from Russ said this was a picture of him and a local guy called Ian Fishwick who helped in the early days Mark C

P*ssheads At Venues
Over the past 2 - 3 years this problem has been getting steadily worse imho. I can understand with the current drinking laws that some drinkers will hit an All-Niter for a late night session. Can't really get my head round why groups of young men would want to pay to get into a club that finishes at 2, isn't a pick up joint and the music is unfamiliar. Surely they have other clubs packed with girlies to eye up (and more) in the vicinity?? I've avoided a certain venue recently, the last straw being a tw*t mirroring my dancing and skipping off to pester somebody else after I asked him "What?!" Been going to said venue many years but lost faith. Shame cos the music is brill. So what's the answer? Memberships? Better scrutiny on the door? Fully understand with the credit crunch that venues need the revenue but then again I've heard others are being more choosy so it must balance out. What do others think? Mark C ps.. Told that some idiot even lit up a cig inside a soul night on saturday!

Wigan Casino Saturday Nights 1979-1981
I think the guy you mention with the huge record box was from Cambridge. We used to be on the same train and he'd wheel his box on an old trolley from the station - p*ssed myself one night when a wheel fell off! His name was James and he had a really weird style of dancing. Was put though to the final of the St Ives dancing competion for a laugh! Mark C
