  3. Fair enough Dennis,I know he use to play it years ago but I didn't think he still did.
  4. Dennis, Try asking Phil Saxe he may let you have it. He's not playing it unless it's a ender for him.
  5. In the sixties it was very dificult to get a late license. It was called a supper license and you had to provide food included in the entrance fee.. All the non drinking clubs wanted a license because that's where the profit was. The Wheel shut down because the owners could make more money out of opening a drinking club it suited them that the council were restricting clubs open more than two hours after midnight. The Hacienda never made any money because everyone was on ectasy. So no booze the entrance fee would have to treble and the venue take a big slice of it.
  6. Ridiculous question. No venue and no punters without booze.

  10. Are you using a Wilkinsons?
  11. Fred Benson a name from the past You didn't go to this gig in Grimsby did you 1970 I did with Fred Benson,A lad called Tony Brown put it on. I got Moses Smith and Emanuel Laskey off him at the time he wasn't that keen on them>
  12. Sandy Wynns was known but I don't think Frankie and The Classicals or Bobby Hebb were known on release we started playing Bobby Hebb in 70 at the allniters. Having said this who knows there were collectors allover with stuff that hardly anybody knew about. For instance the lads at The Blue Note (close to The Wheel) had Tainted Love,I'm on my way, someday were gonna love again and a few more back in 68 they then moved of the scene because it switched more to bluebeat.I didn't know that at the time because I thought I had everything that was any good. I think by 68 a lot of the R&B stuff and mid tempo funky stuff was less played at The Wheel although Bobby Bland,James Carr,Johny Taylor etc were always played.Although Roger Eagle mentioned they were only after The Motown beat back in 66 but this would include the uptempo R&B like Sugar pie desanto etc etc. The Blue Orchid was on a Friday and it was mainly old soul I'm ppretty sure it didn't last long during 1970
  13. Prefer a Red and White. I'll be down there tonight look forward to hearing it. Been packing dance floors floors for 46 years.
  14. Halifax,Bolton,Wakefield,Doncaster,Dewsbury,Burnley,Notts,Leicester,Sheffield,Bradford,Preston,Birmingham,Derby etc.etc all had soul venues around 65 onwards. Lads from all these places and lots more use to come to The Wheel which benefited from 67 with Mojo and Nite Owl allniters closing as Roburt mentioned. The Scotch Club in Torquay was a big soul club around 67 onwards well before The Compass. Manchester had another 2 allniters in the late 60's The Top Twenty and The Majestic. Sunday afternoon sessions were popular The Boneyard Bolton then the Top Twenty Hollinwood opened and in 70 The Wheel started a Sunday afternoon session. The Original Northern Classics such as Bobby Sheen, Alexandra Patten,Invitations,Lou Johnson and hundreds more were all played as new releases so it wasn't old soul then.
  15. From the Manchester perspective and The Wheel I don't remember seeing any skinheads down there. We had short hair around 67 and later by 69 it was getting longer and more casual dress with it. Most of the original soul allniter crowd (and last of the Mods)were moving on by the end of 68 to more mainstream drinking clubs.

  17. I'm pretty sure Dave Knight was the main DJ there he use to also DJ in Nottingham at The Beachcomber or The Brit rowing club club I think. A lot of the lads use to come to The Wheel the next night. I thought it closed in late 1970 and the allniters only run for about 6-8 months
  18. What mattered then was what clothes you wore, did you do the latest dance, did you have a scooter, did you go to the right clubs & attend live shows that featured the 'right acts'. This is very true with probably 90% of The Mod generation where the original scene started. Also that re-releases were quite common in 68 onwards and most people including club DJs didn't even know it was a re-release and were happy to hear it in any format. The collectors which I was one and later a DJ did want the original issue and British demo wherever possible. But I was what I class as a second generation soulie a lot of the original generation had moved on by 68 The newer generation cared less about clothes and scooters and seem to bring with it more collectors. But EMI discs, re-releases and boots were played by most DJ's Regarding now if it's billed as a soul night I would expect to hear CD's/MP3s or if billed as vinyl only that would include boots etc.and a lot of those nights/days advertise on here. I can also say that a lot of people on here go to them even some who are advocating OVO only. I personally would prefer OVO but I also want to enjoy myself and this takes prefernce these days.
  19. Jezz it wasn't The Right Track etc was it?
  20. I'm not just talking about the Wheel if you read my post What about all the other clubs where Tammi Lynn and tons of more deleted classics were well known.A lot of these clubs changed musical policy during 67/68 or shut down.Having said that there was still plenty of other clubs playing deleted soul into the 70s just not allniters. In Manchester Tammi Lynn was mainstream by 69 or even before played in at least another four or five normal discos. This happened with lots of records like Hey Girl Don't Bother Me,Discoteque,Breakout,In Crowd,Thats enough,The Contours,Can't Satisfy all The Motown/Atlantic stuff etc etc I know because I went to these clubs/discos and in a lot of cases use to lend the DJs stuff as I'm sure other people did(not the above mentioned) every half decent DJ had them
  21. I was hoping to follow you aswell at Stoke on The Torch do Brian
