  8. Spacehopper replied to a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
neither cos strictly speaking dave godins term meant the uptempo mid 60s sound that northerners wanted as apposed to the slower maybe more produced and polished sounds of the late 60s and 70s ....nothing to do with which venue it was played at...and not inc mid tempo...70s..modern...rnb...etc...but it all gets played at northern soul nights just like the double barrel tune that sean chapman played keeps getting called ska..it isnt!..musically it reggae ...similiar to ska but ska finished mid 60s...slowed down to rock steady..and then late 60s ...changed again slightly quicker to' boss' or skinhead reggae...but it all gets calles ska nowadays anyway all a load of bollox really dean

  14. dont wanna tempt fate but ive been lucky enough not to break any rare ones....had a few come in the post broken a mint copy of a need a helping hand in about 50 bits...gutted to see it had lasted 40 years and then a week in the hands of a postie!... when i was djing at a reggae 'blues' in stoke in the early hours and pitch black dropped a 12" of bandelero by pinchers which was massive at the time but no longer available on 12...a huge chunk broke off,not expensive but still gutted ,could only get in on lp by then sean parry a go go children dj came over to mine to make a go go cd with his tunes in an original 60s 7" 'wallet'...looked nice but not secure,a uk copy of helen shapiro's stop and you'll become aware fell out and broke in two...

go go children is on the first saturday of every month in bristol and is always well attended and has a great atmosphere, across the board sounds and ages!..always a friendly vibe, northern ,rnb classics and unknown with the odd ska tune thrown in..9 till 2am only £3 guest on the 1st oct is matt from trowbridge who has some big indemanders and put together a great set too on the 24th i believe riverside in gloucester is on which is normally a good little soul night dean
  23. i think people in the 20s are the best we can expect...there will be a few younger (probably who grew up with soulie/scooterist parents) and respect to them for not being swept along with all the bullshit media/music most teenagers are..
  24. i dont think ah alnighter with hour sets of rare and oldies would work,as has been said too many only dance to 'their' thing..personally i like two rooms so i can switch between the two...if only one room i would prefer mainly all unknown/undreplayed to all oldies as would a lot on here but most of us are collectors so still have that desire for sumfin new...as we know their are more who wanna dance to things they know, which isnt exclusive to northern...i did an indie gig for 4 years and started off trying to get them into..well small inderpendant bands.. but it soon become apparent all they wanted was the big hits....at go go children we play unknown and oldies but each dj mixes it up in a 3/4 hour set BUT we have the luxury of being in a big city with a crowd split in the middle with soulies and youngsters who are hearing it all for the first time and just wanna dance to sumfin good so are not blinkered.... the scene may be spilt and may get smaller especially if the recession drags on but is that a bad thing?...there will be those who go to one and those who go to the other and some like me who generally can enjoy both...i suppose the oldies scene although the biggest at the moment is more likely to shrink first because of the average age of the punter ? dean
