Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
and back to the threads original question about a slow rare room before all the talk of clashing or not clashin...... if the rare room doesnt work cos people are havin such a good time dancin to across the board (rare/classic) northern ,why not make it an rnb/latin( and dare i say it ) ska room !....there are lots of people enjoying both locally at go go children and cafe a go go....some of which dont like northern allnight...especially 70s !...and there wasnt a great deal of rnb downstairs as i think has been said earlier in this thread...
-
Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
i think mike said he had 240 in...and while i was upstairs there was maybe a couple of dozen and MOST of them while tapping their feet and obviously enjoying the music were not dancin...the record bar was in the same room, which was good cos if it wasnt there may have been even less in there
-
Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
not saying this is my opinion but just a thought i had so will throw it in the pot for consideration...... could it be that rare room/classic room is part of the problem with the majority of soulies who go out (not djs/collectors) and only dance to what they know ?? what if all 2 room events were more for different genres such as rnb/northern or 60s/70s and modern....and the main room djs were either TOLD to mix up some rare /semi known...or the dj list included known classic alongside rare djs ?? maybe this way those people who only dance to classics will be exposed to and get to know rare aswell,as at the moment they probably hear classics at home AND when out making it harder for djs to break tunes and keep the scene fresh ?? locally one room events such as bridgewater(all djs told to bring sumfin different),riverside(des parker, say no more!) ..and go go children (3 out of 4 residents life time soul fans but not on the scene so not influenced by any other djs or top 500) are doing this,i can remember a year or so ago me and nicci being one of the few dancin to some of des' unknown stompers which last time i was there had a full floor its just a shame that those rare tunes were not being heard by everyone hope you understand what im trying to put across !! dean

Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
you must remember ofcourse the djs downstairs wernt just playing the same old tunes, there were some i didnt know...yes lots of classics but bloody good ones...and for us non bootleg/cd buying types its the only time we can hear those big money tunes ... so personally i wouldnt be in the busy room if it was say a 'handbag' soul room...it has to be good northern/rnb BUT also handbag/club/motown /wotever IS very popular in glos so stands to reason classics would be ?? before my time but i understand yate was playing different stuff to the norm 'back in the day' BUT then again a lot of people at yate were from all over the country...my older brother included who would come down from norwich ! dean

Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
well im gonna be the first to own up... i was in the main room most of the night....i missed most of gingers set cos i was upstairs and loved what i heard....inc some of your set dave.....why didnt i stay up there ?....i honestly think it was just SUCH a good atmosphere AND 'social' downstairs...and the dancefloor was easier for my achey knees and feet ! ....pathetic excuse you may say but sorry its the truth....its just not the same dancin on your own IMHO no matter how good the tunes...IF ....theres a hall full of people...a lot of which you know...going for it elsewhere.....AND although a lot on here may have been upstairs there was a lot of sitting around talking (at least when i was upstairs).....and i just wanna dance when im out ! BUT ! i did wake up the next morning regreting not spending more time upstairs and apologise to those djs doing the right thing....you will see more of me next time...PROMISE... i do understand your frustrations, at go go children the other 3 residents are not from "the scene" and we are doin sumfin different (except my sets you may say )...which some people dont like...so i must try harder but i am easily distracted...not much changed since school days then dean

Great Soul Buying Moments
not a 50p find but was only about 5 years back on ebay........bought a cheapie cant even remember what it was..........the seller then sends me a list hes gonna put on ebay but i get first pick.....most were on pye/grapevine etc but i did get a 'our love will grow-showmen" and a vg++ 'crackin up over you-roy hamilton" for 6 quid each was expecting the roy hamilton to be 2nd issue but nope not even a demo...a nice black issue ! dean although probably the rarest was a canadian bootleg 'best of studio one vol4" reggae lp (later the trax were remixed on an official release "pirates choice" ) for 3 quid from a record shop !..but it wasnt in the book, obviously so he didnt know what he had...only ever heard of one other on an auction list back in the early 90s for 50+

Collecting British...why Bother?
personaly i collect the music as long as its original...not bothered yankie or brit... there are dull and gorgeous labels from both sides of the 'pond'...and i think a mint record sounds great whatever...i understand the arguement about not being caught out with boots though i do find myself stickin up for the yanks at go go children as the other 3 residents are all uk addicts and have awsome collections...come to think of it youve been very quite mr Stapleton !! ...thought yours would have been the first reply...and its a good job dj sean 'my friend jack' parrys not a ss member as hes VERY passionate and not the most tactful person i know !!...his record shack is like a bloody museum...30 odd shcweppes boxes almost all 60s uk origs !!.....soul,ska,beat...lots of demos...its great seeing so many obscure us tracks i never thought were released in the uk(im still a youngster at 42 compared to the others )...must take pics at the next go go and load em up on here dean

Unreleased Stuff... Eddie Holman, Judy Freeman
is there three versions of i surrender then ?...cos ive got a slow version on the 'sweet memories' lp not 'eddies my name' ?... ive been reliably informed that this was the first legit vinyl release ... the lp looks almost the same as the one scanned personally i think you should play the lp not a carver as i have seen someone doing at an ovo venue and tried to tell me it had never been released on vinyl at the time i knew no better and maybe he didnt either anyway it only costs 8 quid ! and a carver is what about 20 ?? dean

To Pitch Or Not To Pitch? That Is The Question
i do it....only about +2 and not on all tunes, some i even slow down by a couple to make easier for the old legs..AND TO BE HONEST I DOUBT IF MOST PEOPLE EVEN NOTICE ive certainly never had any complaints...once again its about watching your crowd as far as the 'its not how it should sound' arguement what about live performances...most of the time they are faster than the original recording...IMHO dean

King Go Forth- Why Is It So Hated
well i dont hate it BUT i do think its a case of 'dont believe the hype /emporers new clothes ' cos theres no way its worth 50-100 quid !! IMHO !!!!...you can get so much better music for ya money... considering its new music then yeah its good but relics, dinasaurs or what ever you call 60s soul lovers theres very few new tracks that can stand next to the 60s/70s stuff...it was just a different way of recording back then which sadly digital recording has ruined...for me anyway...but maybe only time will tell, will it be a classic we will have to wait and see...

Souled Out
well i reckon.... yes it will be a bit cheesy, embarressing and factually wrong in places.....like ALL 'themed' films are and will have to have a story behind it or its a documentary ! quodrophenia had all these faults but i still enjoyed it and overall i think it was good for the scooter scene and i hope this will be too for the soul scene after all enuff people on here reckon it will be dead soon without youngblood so lets hope this gets some in.. dean
