I dont have an ATCO like this but have an Arista,Epic and a few others that I picked up in Kingston , Jamaica, I was told they were Jamaican issues ? Wink Wink. I visited loads of shops and in one I asked about the Arista and the Epic one and they told me they download the sound and label through a computor and scanner and hey presto one 45 is made. You can have one copy or as many as you want. The amount of pressing plants (backs of record shops that are about was quite staggering. Not sure what this Atco actually is but it sounds like something as above. Hope this info helps Dave aka TMIB
  2. I remember early Southport Weekenders (Pre Southport Weekender13 ) the Soul Room was being taken over by this style of music and the version by A Way of Life was playing out someones set, before Colin Curtis (Top Man) came on took the record off half way through and I quote "enough of this *?"%$^ stuff lets have some real SOUL" banged on Staples Singers version to a fantastic roar from the packed soul room the rest of the night was quality Soul mainly 70s. The room was kicking all night. Mavis gets my vote still, although I have a leaning as well to the TWOL version......open minded is one thing, tatse is another I like to think I have both. TMIB

Just to add to the post by Dazz Delphi DL-0015. Roy Smith & Serenity " I got the fever"/ "My Marie" This is IMHO a late 70s onwards release as it is a cracking Modern/Northern dancer that is so infectious I cant understand why its has never seen major plays? If its down to rarity then get hunting it is that good. 4 minutes of dancefloor heaven. Dave Halsall TMIB

  11. Ive known Tim Brown and dealt with TB for about 20 years and he is pretty straight when it comes to records. I personally asked him about 3 wants of mine, which had about a total book value around £650 to £700 for the 3. he said that if I wanted them out of his collection they were £500 each. I disagreed with him, but Tim took his stance which was directly opposite to my valuation and NO DEAL was done, I still class him as a mate and will still buy records from him (price permitting). So if TB is taking the same stance with Ian Dewhirst then there is one answer to Bobas situation. The other view is he has heard whats been going on and said right everything is £500 end of! I suspect it may be the latter, as TB has always done me a good deal on records because he knows they go into my collection. If thats correct then I am pretty miffed because I would of prehaps got 3 good wants off Tim and he would of made the top price valuation based on books/guides. SOUL = (S)ound (O)f (U)nity and (L)ove........not when records and money are concerned Dave Halsall TMIB

Does anybody remember the original Wigan Casino Allnighter bags they used to sell? I still got mine in the attic with original patches on it. Still have my vest with patches on it somewhere but it would only fit my leg now. A knackered Wigan patch just sold for £40 odd on ebay last week and it was pretty beat up. Must get the ladder out and cash in Dave Halsall TMIB

The Flyers a great 70s dancer . Got a tip off Gedd Lunt about 4 to 5 years ago took me about a year to find one. Hard to value it as not well known outside of North West methinks? except Bedfordshire!! Would expect a £50 plus tag on it, but you never know when one might pop up before the rush starts Id rate it at £100 of anybodys money. I think they were a bunch of Canadian/Americans serving in the forces Cant help you with the other one, hope this helps Dave Halsall TMIB

There was a group named SMOKE, out of California circa 1976 on Choclate City Records, while the Mo Soul track is 1971 (????) also out of California. Any connection??? Barry White did "Oh Love" with the Love Unlimited & L.U. Orchestra circa 1973 , while his solo album "Cant get enough" released 1974. with Gene Page co arranging with BW. also included this track. If those dates are correct then BWs release came after Smoke on Mo-Soul. I believe that it came out on a different label design of Mo Soul out of Columbus circa 1971?, can anybody confirm this.??? 15. Bought 300 copies of old stock (7" & 12") of Tony Jackson "Secretly In Love " Opium Records off the owner of the label. This was based on Max Rees recommendation and hearing it at Frames ,Cambridge, when he spun it. Awesome tune. In fact awesome venue, people and music. Sold the lot at £20 a pop over about 18 months, except one copy which I gave to Richard Searling for his 40th at Parkers (now that was a night to remember ). Does this qualify as it wasnt really my discovery and there was a little buzz starting on it. I think it was fetching nearer the £80 to £100 mark based on the top DJs at the time looking for it. Great story behind the release. It was issued when the distributors were going bust and the label owner had to go and get the stock back from their warehouse and had sat in his house along with other label releases till I managed to get him to open the door. Stayed best part of the day with him. He told me Tony Jackson did the Levi adverts singing the Ben E King song. Bought 50 copies of Peggy Gaines "Sweet way of Living " back in the 80s and banged on about that great tune and copies of Soul Bros Inc "Pyramid" off Craig Moerer back in late 80s/early 90s and moved them on.. Having said that its worked the other way as well and missed out on tunes only having to pay for them later. Dave Halsall.
  16. It was years after Jackie Wilson died that it became knowledge he was in an unmarked grave and Blues & Soul ran a fund to raise the money for a headstone, as he died virtually broke due to the medical bills All those records, songs etc and IMO the greatest singer of all time to be laid to rest without a headstone says a lot about the music industry if not society in general even all those years ago. Dave Halsall
  17. I think it was a lighting rig which fell on him while he was sound checking on stage? I have stayed away from Heavy Metal since TMiB
  18. I had forgotten how many Soul Music magazines I have boxed up in the boiler room from the days when I used to stock them for sale. Far to many to list but if you looking for Blues & Soul, Voices, Shades, Soul Survivor, In the Basement, Soul Up North, Soulful Kinda Music, Modernity etc etc then it may be tucked away in a box in de back room?????? PM me what your looking for and I will get back to you asap Cheers Dave Halsall

Was a £200 record for as long as I can remember (books at £300 now?) and a tough nut to crack There is a fantastic ballad on the flip side " I still love you" so a great double header if you can find one. Worth £100 to £150 a side in my book but thats easy to say than shell out for one. Dave Halsall aka TMIB
  20. The flip side is a big voiced middle of the road ballad, not worthy of the other side depending on your view point MMLAHT is awesome to say the least (Got mine off Cliff Steele circa early Cleggy weekenders) was always a £200 to £300 record, until the last 2 years or so when popular demand just pushed up the price on a hard track to find? Dave Halsall ak TMIB
  21. With the R&B genre well and truely established within the Rare Soul scene and some of the tracks sounding a bit White (Sorry if this is reverse racism???)and slightly pushing the Soul bounderies out somewhat , I was just wondering what "NORTHERN/R&B SOUL" 45 has the earliest release date?? To qualify the track has to have been played at a recognised Niter or Soul venue past or present. (Not your bedroom, front room, car, youth club, etc etc) and can preferably be confirmed by a thrid party. I have a sneaky feeling its pushing circa 1957, from a converstion many moons ago but cannot for the life of me remember the track? If this is true, it would make the SIXTIES Soul scene fall under the watchful eye of the Trades Description Act? Tut tut! Anybody got thoughts?? Dave Halsall aka The Man In Black.
  22. While not produced by Ollie check out The New York Rubber Rock Band version of Hello Stranger on Henry Street Records from 1976, its the B side to "Dance with me" This version is more uptempo but has a feel of its own that works well Dave Halsall
  23. I took half the stock of the LP and Bill Shannon had the other half that was on offer, which came from Gene Townsel's Gospel shop I think, back in the early 90s. To my knowledge it was a virtually unknown album even then, and was selling for £20 to £30 at the 1st Southport weekender if I remember correctly. It sold like hot cakes at the time and remember not being able to restock despite several attempts. Shipped a box load to Japan who were mental for it and availability ran dry and the price has risen steadily since then. I did keep a couple back and forgot about them till about 8 years ago when I refound them and sold for £50 each, if I knew then what I ........ etc etc. There was no mention of any 45 at that time and indeed it seems unlikely that the 2 most popular tracks from the LP just happen to be on a 45, so I would say it came out a lot later after the 2 tracks became popular. The LP didnt sell well in the USA hence there was a stock from Gene available. If Gene brought this one out and owns the master then theres no problem even though its years later, its a chicken and egg syndrome.....cashing in he may be, if thats the case, but hey!!! he wrote, produced and sung the LP so good luck to him. An absolute peach of an album and one of my all time fave LPs, sheer emotion and quality abound. Dave Halsall
  24. As far as I am aware it is not a legit release unless it has been licensed from Ted Jarrett or Ace/Kent. Got an acetate of this of Adey for the little bit of help i did for them with the Cds. I have resisted buying one for my collection as I dont see it as legit?????????? If it is then I am one missing from the label Cracking tune Dave Halsall
