  1. I bought some right old crap in the early 80s through lack of knowledge but on the other hand also got some great stuff too as the sellers were sometimes equally clueless. Nowadays, there should be no excuses for people to buy boots or reissues with so much info around...but then no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the public did they?
  2. Out of curiosity, just how rare is the issue? https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/index.php/auction/latest
  3. I remember everyone (i.e. about 50 different people in Edinburgh where I lived then) getting copies of the Frank Beverly and they probably still have them. Ringleaders was £10 for a long time - bought and sold it several times. 'Whiskey Talking' was offered to me for £10-£15 on at least three different occasions in the late 80s or early 90s but I wasn't into it then - not sure I am now. Also - 'Say it to my Face' Royal Five - loads about in the late 80s £5 'Burnt Toast and Black Coffee' Mike Pedicin - saw it on sale a lot at one time (mid 90s?) - a tenner at most Future price hike? 'Way You've Been Acting lately' Al Kent - I once gave away two as it was so common and it seems to be rising now. Oh well! I'm more interested in how they sound anyway.

'Seen it go for a lot more' = on my last list where it didn't sell
  5. I did bid on it up to 400 quid and might have gone further but then forgot all about it - oh well. Not a great price for a one-off acetate really.
  6. I'm not sure it would just be the well known 'handful of clubs' in the 60s. My sister (circa 1968) knew about tunes like the Inviatations 'What's Wrong With Me Baby', Little Hank 'Mr Bang Bang Man', Rufus Lumley 'I'm Standing' and that was from going to a club where they played nothing but soul and Motown in a small town near Aberdeen! I was very confused when I got into it later and she'd say 'oh we used to dance to this' when I was buying something like 'Can't Satisfy' by the Impressions. To her it was just groovy dancing music for 60s chicks - man.
  7. Totally forgot this. The first big import sound arguably and, as you say, still hard to get and still sounds great and gets a strong dancefloor response 100% of the time.
  8. I might have said that although it has been reissued a few times and way over-exposed to the general public.
  9. Pub question: which rarity has maintained its status as both desirable and hard-to-get the longest? I reckon Larry Clinton 'She's Wanted' has been sought out from Wigan late 70s onwards. Not only a great, great record but pretty elusive (particularly in issue). Mind you, it has been reissued which might reduce its status. Any thoughts?

Basically if it skips, it's pretty worthless in my book - imagine trying to resell it later with that problem for over £1000 which is what you'd be spending to own it.
  11. Was given issue copies of 'Don't Bring Me Down' and 'Tainted Love' by a former school friend who was of the opinion it was 'all over after Wigan' and they were worthless boots. Didn't bother with the two pairs of Spencer bags mind you. A mate of mine was also given a white demo of 'If That's What You Wanted' as... 'White Label = boots' Oh dear....
  12. And to go with your latest record purchases... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brown-1970s-Suit-with-Oxford-Bags-the-perfect-Northern-Soul-suit-C40-W34-/121615402608?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c50d7c670
  13. Baby Washington - I've bought and sold three over the last two years for prices varying from £20, £60 to £100. The 'B' side makes it rather in demand these days, so I would say £75 is reasonable and achievable.

Ha! No, you're right. What I should have said is I bought it because she had done 'What's a Matter Baby'. Christ, I must be getting Alzheimers.

£100 would have seemed excessive to me in 1995, as I wasn't really on the scene then and had no idea of values. I bought my copy (£15 from Mick Smith in Stotfold?) in the early-80s simply because I liked the Small Faces version. It never got any reaction when I played it out in clubs in those days as it wasn't regarded as a big tune - too Country and Western in fact as someone once informed me! I think it went to Manship along with a R/W 'Walk With a Winner' and a yellow London 'Fortune Teller' - also £50 each. Where is the Tardis when you need it eh?
  17. Is that due to Wigan DJs being under pressure to 'play to the floor' rather than being a bit more adventurous, because his sets at early Stafford seem to be pretty good judging by playlists - a matter of opinion of course.

Makes me wish I still had mine but I got tired of hearing it, playing it and, ultimately, owning it. Price when sold? Fifty quid... Well it was 1995.
  19. Quite possibly Simon Soussan got those made up...
  20. There were the turquoise label versions in the 70s, which I think were legally made by Modern.

  23. Nothing wrong with appealing to the kids i.e. anyone under 30! My own 14-year-old niece and her pals are now quite into Northern but only the 'girly' stuff - 'cos it's good for dancing to' Not arf...
  24. Legit as it was pressed up by the label's owner, a 'boot' insofar as it was seen as a con to whip up interest (and money) by being passed off as a rare 60s discovery.
  25. Manship has one - £400 though.
