  3. Dave, I have the 45 on Boss Rock - songs are "To Stone" / "In The Groove" (the instrumental). Here's one of the Heatwave 45s https://cgi.ebay.com/GARAGE-SOUL-45-CHEQUES-DEEPER-FUNKY-MUNKY-HEATWAVE-HEAR_W0QQitemZ390114054827QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMusic_on_Vinyl?hash=item5ad49c12ab I have another 45 by them but don't remember what it was and where it is. May be the same one in the eBay link. thanks for posting the info and pics on the S&P band. I can scans and files of the Cheques records if anyone's interested. Were the Cheques from Alexandria? The BMI publishing on the "To Stone" record was from Bossier City, LA. There's about 100 miles between the cities. - George
  4. You mean like this? https://www.popsike.c...0182110343.html A VG+ or better playing copy would be $4000+

This record is from Seattle where I live. I've seen at least 15 copies just around here. I have a few in my backstock of records, never occured to me that anyone would pay more than $20-$30 for it. Guess I was wrong. No one's ever asked me for it, compared to requests I get for Patrinell Staten, Black On White Affair, Cookin' Bag, even the Steppin Stones and Seattle Pure Dynamite. Maybe people don't know it's from Seattle. Based on the flurry of recent sales I'd say it's a not rare record were supply is proportional to demand. Not my sound at all. - George
  6. Anyone know the story about Soul City and the two 45s on Goodtime? The backing track for Everybody Dance Now was reused for the Little Caesar and the Empire 45 on Parkway. Little Caesar was actually Bocky from Cleveland and Bocky and the Visions fame, but he seems to have gone to the east coast and cut the vocal. I'm curious about how the track came about...although I like their other 45 "Cold Hearted Blues" and the flip much better. thanks George
  7. The W. Joel would be William Joel....or Billy to you! This song was written and recorded by his band the Hassles. The Hassles version was a regional hit, and there are probably more recorded versions out there. The Hassles were on United Artists. The Teardrops were somewhere in the eastern/central PA area IIRC. I have another 45 on Max that's weak garage. I like this record (Teardrops) but the severe stereo seperation bugs me. At least its a cheap ($25) fix. - George
  8. Lenny Richards and the Nomads were a Canadian 'beat' group with numerous records The Nomads who did "Be Nice" were a RAW garage band from Texas There were way more than 7 bands called the Nomads - 700 bands is more like it! I don't know how many made records. At least 30.
  9. Does anyone have the Ba-Roz "Come Back Boy" / "The Last Time" on Pisces credited to the Ba-Roz? I have the 45 with the group listed as the Ra-Boz. I would much appreciate either a scan, or confirmation from someone who has both versions that they look identical (dead wax also) except for the name. thanks George

I'm one of the 'residents' at the Emerald City Soul Club in Seattle. We've continued to have a very successful monthly run averaging around 400 people. We've had some venue issues this year but as of now we are GO! and looking forward to a great Weekender! I think that we have several advantages in our favor - a large population of people in their 20s and 30s who are open minded and looking for something that is fun and built from the ground up and doesn't have the sense of corporate overkill. People feel free to dance in their own way and there is no 'meat market' vibe. Seattle is also not too big and spread out (like LA) so the night is accessable, we have people who ride scooters and bikes there. Generally speaking the crowd likes music that's uptempo and soulful. R&B and funky soul also does well. The slower records and popcorny things don't get much play. There's a seperate funk and boogie night (at the same place) that's also gaining a good crowd. Keep in mind that people in the US have no history regarding rare soul or even many popular soul records. No one's gonna gripe about "too many oldies", or discuss which club or DJ was the first to play a record. There's none of the "Soul as a way of life" cultural identification that I see on this forum in the US. The one aspect that's a bit disappointing to me is that most of our crowd has little interest in the actual records, other than to enjoy them. I would be gratified if more people took an interest to learning about and collecting the records. Hope to meet (again) some of you in three weeks! BTW I have no idea what a 'punter' is...except for the American football players....
  11. I'm also suspicious of the connection to Pinkertons Asst Colours also - I like some of the PAC and FM songs and found a 3 CD set that seems to have about everything they recorded, and no mention of the songs on the Queen-G 45.
  12. FWIW, this band (they were self contained vocal and instrumental) are the same as the Nutrons who recorded for Federal, Fabar, and El-Dee. From Columbus, OH.
  13. The next Time - Mama said - Wand - £3 I think you mean the Next Five. Hard to sell this record for more than $10. "Mama Said" does nothing for me but the flip side "Talk to me girl" is a charming 60s pop/rock song. One of the most common non-hit records on this label.
  14. The Forte label for the Frederick and Aardvarks 45s is from central/western Michigan. NOT the KC Forte label. The MI Forte label is related to the famous Fenton label and Great Lakes Recording in Grand Rapids. Of the posted disography, these two are the only ones I recognize as being from MI, but there may be others.
  15. The term 'review' was used by performing acts that would have multiple personas - for example, they would do a set as a stripped down R&B act, then a set with some 'special guest' vocalist (if the primary singer was male, the special guest would be a woman), and a set of ballad/torch songs. They don't mean review like a movie review.

There wasn't really such a thing as the 'uptempo soul audience' in the US - at the time this was still 'teenage music' and the primary market was 'top 40', most of which were for and by teenagers and young adults. There were R&B stations as well that I'm sure RCA was hoping for airplay but the real idea was to get Anka to sound like a current act and back on the charts. They could have easily made something with the "California beat". By 1967 he was looked at as an 'oldies' act and needed a fresh sound. He wasn't aiming to get onto the 'chitlin circuit' or headline at the Apollo.
  17. bump....sound files and scan added. Paste the link to the browser to see the scan
  18. Hello, I have three originals for sale, Paypal preferred. Juan Williams - I Check My Mailbox Every Day - Blue Soul - VG, plays fine, a little bit of crackle at the beginning, no problem for DJ'ing, date stamp and moderate wear on the label perimeter - 400UKP www.buckeyebeat.com/jw.jpg www.buckeyebeat.com/jw_mailbox.mp3 Perk Lee - The Docks - Boss - VG, drill hole, plays fine - 130UKP www.buckeyebeat.com/pl_docks.mp3 Bobby Paris - I Walked Away - Capitol issue - Ex, has an audible pop in 2-3 revolutions, does not overpower music - 160UKP www.buckeyebeat.com/bp_walked.mp3 I'm in the US. Prices include standard airmail to the UK. I can provide sound files from a cheap MP3 deck and scans but they will have to be done in the late evening US time. PM or send email to georgeg45@verizon.net thanks!
  19. Don't bother with any of the local shows. The three listed here are geared toward collectors with quality records to sell and people with money to buy. Most of the 40-50 largest US cities have shows 2-12 times a year but they are not much more than flea markets these days. I can't tell you how much crap records I see people trying to flog at these shows, let alone the bootleg concert DVDs, Insane Clown Posse merch, 'grunge' era posters, etc. The bi-monthly (I think) show in the Los Angeles area is supposed to be pretty good on occasion. The problem with being an out of towner at local shows is that they don't know the inside info that locals know about who to hit up early and who to skip.
  20. Larry McKenzie rented equipment before he got into the recording business. His business and studio were in his house. The bands would need to set up their instruments in different rooms! I think the Harrington record was the last one he ever released. I've seen a few copies, but in collections of people who are not 'soul' heads. Although he stopped recording, he continued to rent equipment and played in bands (one of them was the Hairy Bears who released three 45s and an LP on Hillside) into the 1980s.
  21. Hello all, I need some advice on values for Juan Williams - I Check My Mailbox... (Blue Soul) Tradewinds - Price Of Love (Tradewinds) Perk Lee - the Docks (Boss) TIA George
  22. This is "Gone Forever", right? I have that record. Send me a PM if you still want a scan. - George
  23. BUMP! I know these are not Northern records but anyone have them or know where I could get them? thanks!
  24. Looking for the following Cleveland records - first two must be Ex or better, Inter Circle in playable shape: Michael Bell (Saru) Sir Stanley (Saru) Inter Circle (Soul Kitchen) Paypal please to USA email : georgeg45@verizon.net THANKS George
  25. I won the copy that closed on Aug 16 ($600). It was actually in M- shape and plays like new. The underbidders on that copy were not any of the high bidders on the copy that closed yesterday.... I made the 'mistake' of selling it before. The one I have now will be pried from my cold dead hand....
