Review Sleepless Nights Soul Club May 2003

Hi our 2nd year underway: heres a review from Wendy Flynn
Friday 23rd May was the first Sleepless Nights of year II. Anyone attending must have had low expectations - it couldn't possibly better the attendance and atmosphere of the 1st anniversary bash. Could it? Friday night would indicate SN will continue to be a great club. It also proved that SN is establishing a legacy.
Al was up first on the decks. Under the tutelage of Danny, Pip and John, Al has been spending slightly less money on beer than usual and instead has invested in some nice records. Despite the early hour, the floor was soon filling up to the sounds of The Monitors, The Trilons and The 4 Tops.
Next up was Paul and Willie ? double decking. Paul has taken Willie under his wing and after a good spot at the all-nighter in April, Willie has shown hes now capable of flying solo. Nonetheless as a tag team, Paul & Willie are the WWF champs when it comes to spinning tunes 60s RnB and solid soul sounds.
Their spot was followed by Mark T, our favourite uncle, not content with occasionally handing out free cds but spoiling us rotten with a choice selection of 6ts tunes from shufflers to stompers. Then Brian reached into his trick bag and pulled out an impressive selection of 60s & 70s and magiced up an impressive set in front of our very eyes and ears. Next Pip played one of his trademark stomper sets.
Pip was raised on a dubious diet of speed metal. Danny has improved Pips musical nutrition & now Pip has a box of stompers for breakfast, lunch and tea. Karl started off his set with Never Learned to Dance, which saw the kids tripping up over their toes to get on the floor. He made sure to keep everyone there with a set full of classics.
As the night wore on Grandmaster Danny D took his turn on the decks and played a faultless set giving us hardly time to breathe. Its a wonder no one dropped dead from a heartattack as John Dunne (as always - playing to/for the crowd) worked us into a frenzy. And in the finest Irish showband tradition he sent us home sweating.
Like Little Carl Carlton, Sleepless Nights might be small - but the competition aint nothing yall.
Our club is growing stronger day by day.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DMSC INFO - June Event Cancelled

A quick word to pass onto all members that the DMSC June Event at Springfield Hotel is cancelled.

As we finding out we are often at the mercy of other peoples planning, in this case it appears have fell victim to a double booking, all we say is that we are certain that our planning was on the ball.

Due to the short nature of the timings, we first offer apoligies, again it seems it is out of our hands, and also ask for all members to spread the word.

All other dates for 2003 are still 100%

Thanks
DMSC team

Zanzibars 25 May a DMSC Lookback

First a quick good to meet all the online types knocking around espically the down south ones who dont get to see so often nowadays.

After fridays adventures, pleased to annouce all lost was car keys for a while and a houston outlaws for 30 mins

Quick and fast report if interested

Trip down: Listening to Cardiff promotion playoff match could have been the highlight, or would have been if you spoke welsh! and then it was the normal game of anyone bring tapes, nah so it was the one duty minibus tape all the rest of way. Found venue first time and were on time ..phoning Guiness book of records as you read this.

In and at it. Changed just a bit since last time there when stuff like "first shot " ruled the roost.
Very smart layout decor design and all that, tunnels leading everywhere, quite possibly smartest venue been to for a long while.
Three rooms, main room, conniseurs room and jazz funk room
Think up from north wales coast lot was 1 minibus and 4 cars doing the trip, most normal rogues showing up.

Andy K and Chico had an spot in main hall , was still filling up at this time but pushed out some good stuff
Meself then Steve were on in conniseurs room a fair sized room, smart and plush full of dealers and a boxing ring style dance.
Most of first half was spent in here, heard some great and interesting sounds, with the empasis on ears rather than dance floor
Nick Brown, Ian B and others all gave ears a treat. Fair few dealers, managed to blag latest SKM, which as always interesting reading and some good points in the letters section. One certain dealer started showing effects of too much monkey, as last heard was attacking people wearing monkey mask.

Into main hall later on, DMSC regulars Andy Rix and Rob Thomas were in main room and carried on where left off at Fridays monkey.
With a great hour of spins. Next up for the following hour was myself and Steve, we split into 30 mins each. Threw up main room plays at en d
Steve T took next half hour and pushed out mix of quality revivals rarities and currents , hopefully hell push up a few plays later

Mark Bicknell up next, continued with some great rare revivals and more, current plays are listed in lime street report. Not 100% sure who was on next on or for rest of nite, but we stayed in main hall till end, floor stayed busy thru out and a well varied mix of sounds was given out.

Was just going to have a look in the third room and found out it was all over, 3am and was time to go, always a sign when time passes by quickly that are having a good one.
Dunno what happenend to the solar live broadcast, Dave Rimmers spot come thru and had good reviews, after that not really sure as sky digital only had jazz funk background music on after midnite from what I heard on quick scan of tape

Overall we had a great time, as always a good laugh, great venue, good crowd in with large north west and north wales groups and place had a good feel and atmosphere, most enjoyable and big thanks to the promoters Kev, Ken, Karen and all the rest who looked after us and put on a great event.

Reckon its got to be the only main regular Bank Holiday Event worth giving up the b and q trip for. And a good reason for extending bank holidays as feel like dog****

Bashed out a few words on stuff I pushed out for what worth as written for site and e-monkey
Was sussing out what would go, heard there were a lot of requests for
classics and read past playlists, which pointed to classics main hall style but as later saw a fair few familar faces turned up from North West , many dmsc regulars or knock around same venues as us. So thought a mixed mix along the lines of below would work and it seemed to do the job, in no order and quick and dirty,

Sugar-Isonics
Long time Alan H csc spin, this once a forgotten wigan spin, is currently very popular round our way at dmsc events over last year or so, and with Carl Willingham also giving it major plays reckon fair to say well popular spin

Im Coming Home - September Jones
While could be classed as a "oldie", still works and fresh to a fair few and nearly always drags out at least one "what was that".

Choke that monkey- San Remo Strings feat Jr Walker cover
Steve T dug this instrumental out after prising info out of him with cocky promise that will find more, had a dig and was lucky enough to dig out a copy or two, a sort of good rockin feel to start off with, strings come in from all over the place for a bit, and after a while a great sax jumps in. Instantly well popular floorfiller

Emanuel Laskey - Peace Loving Man
Extremely popular at moment and fits the mood, often followed by requests for flip

B J Thomas - Keep it Up
Started off as a Ion cover up and cover artist name "Duke Baxter" fits better than the actual real artist, first heard it in Shoreditch CSC days spun by Irish Greg, over last few years think this has given me so many laughs with various stories, even last Friday and then again on Sunday had more tales to add. Reg plays nowadays by Guy H, Pete Coulson, and at all DMSC events and more.

Little Charles and Sidewinders - The Loner
Heard Dave Rimmer give this some at monkey, instant attraction, sounded great to me and tracked one down. History wise not sure how well known but it features in a 70s John Vincent top ten, Instrumental flip works well and worth a go and cheap.

Hold On - Judy Freeman (test lp version)
On a dub courtesy of Irish Greg a few years ago, who has the one off test pressing lp found by Benji from Munich , thought to be the complete orignal take that the 45 release was edited from, longer version with better finish build up makes the whole track so much more stronger. While had its time elsewhere, constant requests for it over the last two years our way make it an almost regular play/floorfiller

Joe and Mack - Dont You Worry
which way........

Tangeers - Let My Heart And Soul Be Free
no need

Cody Black - Going Going Gone
A all over the place cheapie, and maybe one that may cause some to pull face , shrug, Full credit to Kev Murphy who threw it out at Goldburne Niter recently, and made many do a double take as it sounded so good, it made me dig it out anyway

Andy Killocks plays

A quick thanks to everyone involved at Zanzibars on Sunday for a great
evening. As requested, playlist;

Jesse James - Are you gonna leave me - Shirley
Voicemasters - Two lovers - Frisco
Martinques - If you want call me - ME-O
Eugene Gamble - Without my baby - Jetstream
Five Chances - If you want to call me - Finch
Vashons - Well be together - Delle
Anthony&Delsonics - Everytime - Emerge
Clebrities - I Choose You Baby - Boss
Charts - Nobody made you love me - Wand
Volumes - Ive never been so in love - Garu
Five Chances - Im gonna miss you - Finch
Deltours - Sweet and lovely - Starville
Precisions - Sugar aint sweet - Drew
Anita Andersen - Secretly - Contact
Facinators - In other words - Bombay
Perfections - So lonely - Big B

Lookback: DMSC Fri 23 May

Second Monkey At Springfield event of the year, and we were well looking forward to this one, know when you get that feeling? Well we felt a buzz of anticapation going around for this one...

Ongoing car probs, clutch status: now only gets us round corner to asda, so had to scrounge lift of Ritchie and Ann, much appreciated. Turned up early and in a soon to be gone chill mood had a casual beer while looking out over the river to England, realising we could flyer it as 1km from England.

Sound crew up and fixing, Stevie T due to arrive soon, bar open, as always table/chair rearanging, all we needed now was the booked djs, otherwise mean have to take care of that and that will knock things outta sync, and of course that was what happened. Sue was left ic of the event and soon was a constant stream of members to keep her on her toes.
As requested when out and about, all members got thrust in their hands the Drunken Monkey mask flyer, was there a purpose behind these?
Well rumous that Stevie T would buy any member wearing one a drink at Locarno on Sunday were quickly killed off, though a sly swig from Bargain Boozes 3 litre 8% £1.99 conniseurs cider may be on offer so dont forget them. Though going by comments it seems that there be a breakout of lot of rare soul fiends kids living the monkey tomorrow

By now all things had worked out as should be, both rooms kicked off, Sid Jones from Lime Street Club at Dunkinfield took over, due to communication probs on our side, have to give apoligies to Sid as cause of timings etc he got a rough deal, and though his partner in crime John Purvis from Lime St was delayed he overcome all and made max use of his time on decks and got nite off to a cracking start.

Kev Spittle was up next and carried it on, gave out a great mix during his 45 mins, by now nite was cranking up, 10 come and Monkey regular Rob Thomas jumped up and continued from where he left last time kicking arse with top selection of quality,.

Carl Willingham was the special guest for this event and the fact that this was his third visit as a dj says just how popular he is at monkey. And the variation and quality of his plays shows just how much depth this man has, Room was jumping now,. sweaty, packed and could cut the atmospheric, floor well busy.

After Carls hour it was time for Andy Rix to grab hold and continue pushing it to the limit. As always bashed out quality mix, members lapped it up and it seemed like whole nite building up to a climax. Normally we finish 130 ish, but tonite had to call a sudden halt to the nite at 1am, Steve T managed to fit in 3 finishers to seal nite off

Early finish: ok was a bit of a shock but hotel management had valid reasons and while not happy feeling was just had to accept it.
Reason was the sound team Dave Eddie and Dave in order to get best sound available had managed to use the hotels built in system as well as there own.

This gave the best sound we ever had at Monkey, unfortunately it was too good, due to the way the hotel system worked, it had effect of sending the sound upstairs straight to hotel rooms. The residents of these rooms complained and the comprise was reached to finish at 100. Though other room cracked on later

Apoligies to all members, though it happenend as were trying to improve things and couldnt foresee the results, we now know next time

Crowd was one of the best numbers wise, offical figures 190, was good to see many regulars from all over uk turning up, Nottingham, Barrow On Furness, Halifax, Manchester, Bolton, Oldham Stockport and all the other North West towns, the almost 100%ers from Cambridge, loads from the midlands, all the North Wales regulars, the Chester boys and all the rest no doubt have missed many more places out apoligies but getting late.

One thing noticed was just how many familar faces were there not just from dmsc but all the other quality events around uk, someone once said quality soul quality people. good to catch up with many, and see familar faces for first time at DMSC inc John Pugh who every time meet by either coincedence or strange unknown forces the event is a good one.

Gotta say thanks to all, as always it was your up for it attitude that really made the nite, the whole feel, the buzz, the banter, the reaction, imo it was one of the best if not the best.

All Era Second room went well, format, sound and all that still evolving,
regulars up on nite were Paul Baldwin, Chico, Pete Bangor, Mark Speakman
A change in the format of nite which worked well
Numbers were up on last time and been told it went really well.
Pete B has passed on plays which be at the end of here and hopefully will have a more detailed account of the nite soon.

Feedback on nite? Well again it knocked us out, thanks to all who passed on, all appreciated. Have added some earky on line comments at end,
If you were there and know were loads of online members there, feel free to pass on your views by hitting that comment button at end.

Sounds info, playlists up are below as busy weekend and time against us will add more sounds info after weekend.
Of course view above is my own look at nite and as such cruical things as no lites in ladies bogs needing sorting was all over place at times and so view may be different than yours, but whatever your view feel free to pass on to rest of dmsc members by using the comments button

DMSC team casualty report, one white car often used by dmsc members to get to many quality events blew up on the way home last nite, Stevie T was heard saying "oil? what do you mean".
The amount of dmsc members who tried to view the onlive A55 traffic cameras in order to watch Steve Ts attempts to drag it home the next day serverly overloaded the server causing the whole road network system to crash.

Sunday : Can catch Andy Rix, Rob Thomas, Steve Thomas, Chico, Andy Killick and meself at Zanzibars/Locarno event tomorrow in both main and conniseurs room, if cant make it can tune into solar radio either thru web or if have Sky thru the Solar station on there, and listen to the live broadcast . See Solar Live Broadcast news article for links, timings and so on.

Future: Many DMSC things going on, in North Wales and elsewhere, keep your eyes on here for latest news and info
Next DMSC At Springfield is
Monkey Roots a North West/North West Special
details out last nite up here afetr monday

....from meself and Steve and all the rest of DMSC crew to all dmsc members thanks for making the nite!

Lookback at Tonys Last niter

Last ever Tonys
As well behind with many things, if dont do it here it never get done so all a bit its rough and ready...
Anyway looking back at it the last nite at Tonys was a very good un, think somewhere about 3-400 turned up for this final nite.
Popped in to an earlier all-dayer at Lowton which meant we were well up in the mood.
Having a laugh we were talking about what memorabilia we were going to rob, then later saw 3 or 4 people carrying out one of the red easy settee things that used to line dancefloor, cracked us up as had visions of a well smart front room, with one of these right in middle, just think about what they might find when checking out whats fell down the sides.
(later found out had actually paid for it beforehand so wasn't a case of check out their neck)
Someone counted up at least 70 odd from North Wales Coast lurking around, which is a bit scary, (the counting that is!) but gives an idea of how things are.
One of our lot almost (or did he make it? never saw the final result) won the privledge of being the last ever person to get chucked out of Tonys, a shocking tale involving Ribenna and all sorts.
Sounds billed line was as below
Bob Hinsley Mick H Carl Willingham Pip Kev Murphy Pete Coulson Mark Morgan Plus Regs
And Upstairs Banging Away
Dave Hawkins Eddie Barton Davie Brown Paul Baldwin
All was as it always is at Tonys, always to me had its own sort of taste and the djs all dished out what the crowd wanted. From latest sounds, revivals and those Tonys regular always hears.
8 come and that was that, no more Tonys, after so many years of regular events has to be a shame, many mentioned it was a shame that recent nites couldnt have had more nites like the last one. Still live goes on, know the promoting team reckons the new venue at LUX Club Wigan (memberships were handed out on the nite) is going to be a winner.
Did have up a few years ago video clips from the Grey Whistle visit in early 80s, shout if needs dictate and will dig.
After event thoughts
Still smiling at the thought of those carrying the settee down the road as the sun rises over ...............
Other thoughts
No more doing the 5 times around the one way circuit.
No more early morning walks round Blackburn trying to remember where car is parked.
What is playing that track from four heartbeasts film about , not one of my favs by a long way
Best quote about Tonys "You know what you are going to get and thats what you get...simple!"

Weekend Broughton, Goldbourne both kicking

Have had some info passed on about Saturday nite

Heard Soul Sams and Brian Ellis monthly Broughton event was a good un.
A good crowd in, packed and with both residents doing it, plus guests Kenny Burrell and Steve Thomas giving out top well mixed set seems venue was on top form

Goldbourne Niter seems to have been a cracker, been told packed 300+ ?, all djs on best form. word seems to be getting round about this niter. Which is fast turning into a must go for sounds, djs booked and crowd.

Ask Stevie t why he got a standing ovation!

Appears a big buzz on next Monkey on Friday, plus theres about 30-40 so far on the Monkey bus to bank holiday big one Zanzibars/Locarno Brumland next Sunday

If out and about feel free to post up views, site needs it!

The title Looking Good: Mod Club Classics you would think explains it all, but as this is very close to his heart hes babbling on like a 15 year old school girl with a Westlife poster. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdbgpd153.html> more THE COMPLETE METEOR ROCKABILLY&HILLBILLY RECORDINGS - CDCH2 885 OK, youve got a choice here. Washington's Lost Soul
By David Segal May 11, 2003

The band is drunk. Not falling-down drunk, but more than tipsy, and it's only midnight, which means the band will soon be loaded. Edgewood Studios on K Street is packed with musicians and well-wishers, including Bo Diddley, who lives nearby. And over in a corner stand the Cavaliers, a five-man vocal group and the stars of this session, here to record a rowdy, 2 1/2-minute R&B track called "Do What I Want."
It's the autumn of 1966, and this is the Cavaliers' last chance. Every member of the Washington group is about 30 years old, which is borderline past-it in the pop business. The group knows that if "Do" doesn't chart, the dream of singing and touring full time is doomed. But it's hard to worry tonight. There's a party mood at Edgewood: The musicians, more soused by the hour, keep fumbling the tempo, and to give the song some roadhouse ambiance, the crowd is whooping and shouting through each take.
A couple of weeks later, a local label called Shrine Records releases "Do What I Want."...

YORKSHIRE RIDER LOOK BACK 12/04/03

YORKSHIRE RIDER LOOK BACK 12/04/03

“If it weren’t true…………………..”
Guest DJ: CRAIG BUTLER

Col & I went up to the Rider good ‘n’ early and, with the help of Eddie who arrived shortly after we did, the decks were set up and spinning toons well before the 8.30 kick off This gave us time to admire the newly refurbished & decorated room, the bar area had been transformed (complete with new barmaid), there were freshly painted walls, a new carpet, and an absolutely wonderful set of gold lamé curtains hanging from the back of the stage (Sidney Barnes would have looked the dogs bo****ks on that stage in front of those curtains – sigh!!!!!!), hmmm the room seemed almost too posh for a northern do now;-)))

Whilst I waited for soulies other than us three to come along and join us, Col & Eddie could detected feedback which meant a bit of tinkering was about to ensue, I now hoped soulies would arrive a bit later. The only thing worse than going to a soul night and being greeted by silence; is going to a soul night and being greeted by nothing at all and believe me Col & I have done that scenario too; we once turned up to a soul night a week early, but then we’ve always been keen ;-)) Eventually soulies did start arriving & I had to make light of the music-less situation the “virgin” barmaid (virgin to her job, not sure ‘bout anything else;-))) had to make light of the dubious looking pint she had just pulled, whilst Col & Eddie continued to try fathom the problem, which of course they eventually did (after what seemed an age to me) and the sound of sweet soul music was once again flooding out of the speakers, the barmaid seemed to have cracked her beer “problem”, so that just left us hoping a few more soulies would come through the door and we’d be set for a good night.

First up was Eddie with a spanking set of toons, followed by Alex who also surpassed his normal standard of plays. Next on the decks was local soul boy Craig (who had stepped in as a late sub for Paul McNamara who in turn was sub for Ion, who was unable to guest for us this month (as advertised) but hopefully he’ll be available on a future date as I hope Paul will). Anyway after a few slow toons he upped the tempo a little and played some lesser known stuff (well they were to me) one I had heard him play before (when he DJ’d at the much missed Beehive in Bradford) was the 70’s version of Ty Karim’s “Lighten Up” , this is one of those records that I always reckon I prefer the 60’s version until I hear the 70ts version, then I think well this is good too!! “Top Dog” Guy then stormed onto the decks and with his usual élan played a scorching set of up tempo dancers. Last, but not least was Col who kept the tempo moving with what I can only described as an awesome set, I know, I know, you’ think I’m biased but if it weren’t true I wouldn’t say it;-))) All in all no-one seemed disappointed with the sounds played even though we had the fewest soulies in ever at the Rider - Where were you all? Still, those soulies who did come along more or less expressed the same thoughts, which are it doesn’t really matter if there are 30 or 300 people in the room (300!! I wish!!!) as long as they enjoy what they’re hearing. Got to agree with that one, but don’t take my word for it (though you know, if it weren’t true I wouldn’t say it) decide for yourself if the music is worth playing…………….

Colin Wood (warm-up)
Mighty Sam – Georgia pines Jackie Wilson – Just be sincere O’Jays – Working on your case Sid Barnes – Safety Zone Ronnie Walker - Trouble Soul Inc – My Proposal Bobby Reed – Caledonia Brown EJ Chandler – I can’t stand to lose you Eddie Engel James Barnes & The Agents – Free at last The Pets – What kind of girl Betty Green – Lonely girl Cody Black – Slowly moulding Edwin Starr – You’re my mellow The Puffs – I only cry once a day now Onyx – You never fail to amaze me Bernard Williams – It’s needless to say Rosco Robinson – What you’re doing to me Honey & The Bees – Dynamite exploded Dream Team – I’m not satisfied George Scott – Family Tree The Strides – I can get along without you now Mikki Farrow – Set my heart at ease Silky Hargeaves – You’re too good Rose St John & The Wonderettes – I know the meaning Sam Cooke – Sugar Dumpling Bill Baker – Another sleepless night

Alex Jones (anyone who reads these reviews regularly will know why his playlist can be a little sparse on info)

Excellent Album Track –Title & Artist known only to Alex;-)))) Lonnie Russ – Say girl Fascinators – In other words Betty Wilson – I’m yours Cautions – No other way Servicemen – Sweet magic Clarence Townsend – I found a love (wicked toon) Gentlemen Four – You can’t keep a good man down Ty Karim – Lighten up (6Ts version) Tokays – Baby baby baby Exits – Under the streetlamp Galahads – I got to find a way Jessie Davis – Hang on in there Soul Set – Will you ever learn Soundmaster – Lonely, lonely

 Colin Wood

Chosen Few – Birth of a playboy El Corols – Chick chick Delilah Kennebreuw – Bright lights Ambers – I love you baby Dynamics – I wanna know Para-monts – Come go with me Edwin Starr – Don’t tell me I’m crazy Bobo Mr Soul – Hithhike to heartbreak road Billy Storm – Please don’t mention her name Soulville All Stars – I’m gonna get to you Al Gardner – Sweet baby Checkmates Ltd – Run nigger run (not very pc nowadays) Connie McGill & The Visions – I can’t stop my love Charles Mintz – Running back Rivieras – You counter feit girl Joel Christie – Since I found you Sandra Lynn – Where would I be Intruders – Check yourself True Tones – He’s got the nerve Echoes – Million dollar bill Tyrone Davis – Bet you win Counts – Peaches baby Big Dee Irwin – You satisfy my needs

Record of the night for me, well this was a difficult choice to make from so many spanking toons played, but Bobo Mr Soul – Hitchhike to Heartbreak Road has got to be one of the all-time oh sooh soulful toons I have ever heard. I just go into meltdown whenever I hear this – what!! I’m entitled to my opinion same as the next person;-)))

Next month May 10th all being well Andy Dyson is advertised as Guest DJ, but with the way things have gone this last couple of months you never can tell. Might be worth you coming along with a “just in case” playbox ;-)))) If you can’t wait until next month get yourself to the Yorkshire Rider website, http://totn.topcities.com where you’ll hear loads of good toons. See ya next month. Soulfully yours, Shirley.
Even more thanks to Shirley for yet another top read.

Review of SOULER POWER EDINBURGH 26/04/03 by Shirley

DRIVERS CLUB – SOULER POWER – EDINBURGH 26/04/03
Thanks to Shirley for yet another great review

Guests Malc & John (Dundee) Colin Wood & Guy Hennigan (Yorkshire Rider Club)

Sometimes living in the centre of England has it’s advantages, one of them being it’s as long as it’s wide to get to most places throughout the UK, so the journey to Edinburgh wasn’t really any further than say a trip to London for the night and we’d done just that on more than one occasion;-)) I’d been to Scotland before but never to Edinburgh and having heard so much about the place I was really looking forward to this trip for more than one reason. Paul McNamara had also decided to take the trip up and he joined us on the train at Newcastle and within minutes Col & Paul were cracking open the cans, talking wisely about soul music and would you believe it, checking out records they just happened to have with them (Col his DJ box & Paul his sales box). Soul boys they just can’t help themselves!!!!!!! I bet if a soul boy was alone in the most desolate place on the planet as long as he had a few 7” black vinyl discs with him he’d not be alone long before someone came to check out his toons;-)))))) Anyway soul music aside, the train journey to Edinburgh via York is one of the most scenic I’ve ever been on, the coast route is just breathtaking. Edinburgh didn’t disappoint either, everything I’d been told was true. Onwards to the hotel which was also a pleasant surprise, although the “hothouse flower” heating was a little overwhelming, thank goodness it was confined to the public areas and not the rooms otherwise Col & I would have been walking around a la au naturelle whilst in the hotel – not a pretty site I don’t mind telling you ;-)))) Just time for a shower and change of clothes then it was out for a bite to eat (we found a great little Italian place just around the corner from the hotel) then it was into a taxi and on to the Drivers club. It suddenly struck me at this point that there were similarities between The Rider Club and The Drivers Club, first one being the name, Rider - Driver (get it?).

As we arrived other similarities struck me, it was in a less than salubrious part of town, the club itself was just on the right side of seedy (although since the Rider’s has had a lick of paint it has become dangerously close to being a tad too upmarket for a soul venue;-)) and having met Hammy before I knew that the soul music they played was just the kind we liked to listen (and dance to). It was a slow start (again reminiscent of the Rider) and it took a little while for folks to get on to the dance floor but once they were up strutting their funky stuff there was no stopping them (myself included). Everyone played brilliant sets with a lot of stuff I hadn’t heard before or for a long time and the people at the club made us feel very welcome, Hammy even managed to make the decks go silent for a while during his spot, I thought he was just trying to make us feel at home (for those of you who go to the Rider, you’ll know what I mean when I say that’s an in joke), but no he really had cocked up, it wasn’t long though before music was flooding out through the speakers again;-)))) All too soon the night was over and it was back to the hotel where a drink or two was in order whilst we chatted the small hours away interrupted only by the late return of a hen party, followed by a stag do and of course the obligatory drunk who was looking for a fight all of whom we managed to fend off in our own inimitable friendly Yorkshire manner, nothing was going to spoil our night;-)))))

For those of you who like to know these things I managed to jot down a few toons played so in no particular order here goes:

This Is The Modern World 2003

It’s been a long time since I added anything worthwhile to this site so I though I ought to pull my finger out. I haven’t been out much recently so can’t really say anything about venues although I do feel as if I am missing out on a lot at the moment! Despite that my system at home has taken plenty of hammer because the excellent tunes keep arriving. The soulful house epidemic seems to be dying down as the ratio of top quality sounds continues to reduce. It certainly seems that way to me unless you’ve got dig much deeper to find the best releases. Despite that, the pure soul stuff is top drawer at the moment with so many good tracks coming from independent labels and the UK soul specialists. Here’s a quick rundown of my favourite modern tracks just at the moment.

1. Felicia Adams - No One Else Has been only available as an independent release direct from Felicia herself but will be available in the UK from Cage De Soul from Monday. This track samples The Jones Girls "Nights Over Egypt" which makes it very instant. The entire CD is very good with "Share My Love" also being very good.

 2. Michelle Williams - My Only Love Is You. Produced by Tommy Sims and sampling an old James Brown record this is excellent. Even more surprising because Michelle is one third of Destiny’s Child. Although current soul hero Tommy produces quite a few tracks on the CD, this is the only standout track.

3. Selah2 - When I Think Of You Very nice track from a very strong CD. Pronounced Selah Squared, this is from a gospel CD from a female duo. I could have picked “Hold On” too although “How Could I Ever” seems to be very popular.

4. R. Kelly - Happy People Takes off where "Step In The Name of Love" finished. A high quality tune from the annoyingly inconsistent singer.

5. Eric Roberson – The Vault 1.5 (Entire CD) I can’t pick really a standout track from this CD but if forced it should be “Rock With You”. The whole CD is very solid. Eric (or Erro as he sometimes records under) has been building a reputation for some time but still has to get his material out himself via his own website. Some tracks here are duplicated from The Vault CD. There’s not really any dancers on this CD but possibly the most consistent CD so far this year.

6. Roy Ayers – Sugar (Joey Negro Remix) Finally out on a 12” on BBE, this is fantastic. Originally recorded in the late 70s but never came out due to Roy’s prolific out put at the time. The Joey Negro remix adds a little bit extra to the unmixed version, which appears on the Virgin Ubiquity CD.

7. Sven Zetterberg – Heartaches Was All You Got This will cause all sorts of arguments. Sven is a Swedish blues singer (white, I guess) who has recently recorded this track which sounds like high quality crossover. It was announced at the recent Great Yarmouth weekender as being by Sven Goran Ericcson. If only he could produce a performance this good in Portugal!

8. The Spinners – Got To Be Love This appears on the Mtume/Lucas CD on Expansion. A fabulous CD with many well-known classics on it and a few surprises. I didn’t know this song at all until I bought the CD but I love it. It was recorded in 1981 and bears all the classic hallmarks of The Spinners and an Mtume/Lucas production – you can’t argue with that!

9. Rosie Gaines – I Can’t Get You Off My Mind This came on a Hidden Beach compilation CD last year but now appears on Rosie’s CD on Dome. I’ve always highly regarded Rosie and she produces the goods once again. She sounds eerily like Michael Jackson on some tracks. Great CD bar tracks 2 to 5. Everything else is brilliant.

 10. Café De Soul Volume 4 The fourth and strongest of the Café De Soul compilations. A lot of this may be considered smooth jazz but it certainly isn’t bland and shouldn’t be associated with most of the material that comes under that banner. Standout tracks are Michael Sims, Exyt and Copeland Green but it’s all high quality stuff – just buy it!

 11. Phillip Mitchell – Just The Beginning Out on Grapevine, this CD showcases mostly demos that Phillip cut for other artists to record. Some new stuff to me along with different versions of well known modern classics recorded by Bobby Womack, The Patterson Brothers and Corey Blake. Essential southern soul – I’m warming to this stuff.

Goldbourne Niter Look back Sat 20 April

After Broughton, the minibus headed for Goldbourne niter, picking up yet a few more North Welsh strays, was a great nite. Somewhere along the line Goldbourne has become a regular haunt for us, with a minibus full and 6 others from coast turning up at the event, there was a well strong presence from the homeland. Think the recent selection of djs , the venue and the fact we always have right old laugh there make this a most enjoyable niter. And the quality of sounds heard there makes this imo a great niter.

Sounds wise threw some quick and dirty words together on what caught, apologies if a bit brief and not feature all djs as kept getting side tracked .

Steve Thomas - Yeah its your man otherwise known as the Holyhead monkey, did a great set, again he varied flavour with strong 6ts feel this time
a off the top of head 5 plays were

Choke the monkey - San Remo Strings feat Junior Walker cover
(Caused a stir first time out at the last Monkey and did the same here when he started set off with it, and had so much interest and requests had to play it again at end of set. This is going to be massive, brief sound clip up here shortly)
Patti Austin -Someones Gonna Cry. *just 17 when she recorded this)
Johnnie Mae Matthews -Lonely youll be
Dee Dee Warwick - Worth Every Tear I Cry
Patrice Holloway Stolen Hours

Mick H followed and did the business with the likes of
Demanding Man -Sensations ..ouch
And also the likes of Anthony and Delsonics
Mick said will pass on plays later

Carl Willingham did more rare soul damage with a great set with fair bit of new stuff, top stuff and a few revivals
Isonics, Soundmasters, Itching Man ?? Tamala Lewis were just some that memory remembers

Kev Murphy started off with some rare revivals, also included two "cheapies" that dont get much outings but sounded great out loud and proud, Amazers "Without a doubt" and Cody Blacks "Going Going Gone". Course many big sounds included likes of Regents on Mad (someones pass on title as its all gone blank) got a outing

Time caught up with us, as always at the mercy of Stevie Ts work plans so had to leave early.

Odd bits:
Alan Barnes says the Easter Viaduct was a packer
He was dishing out some cracking 2k stuff in the "other" room, including an interesting 2003 mix of Flamin Kings Ho Happy Day
Laughs
The family tax credit mess up seems to have had dire effects in north wales, as we turned up with about 6 sales boxes, when you include Steves 50 play boxes our "entrance" must have seemed like a road crew for .......

Final word, most enjoyable niter, as said we always seem to have fun here! A very late bar, bit of a edge to nite, great dj policy and only a fiver in.
We enjoy it!

On every 3rd saturday of month

Can catch Carl Willingham as special guest at Next Monkey at Springfield Friday 23 May

The sad death of Little Eva

It is with sad news of the death of Little Eva last weekend at the age of 59. She passed away after a long illness. Little Eva was born Eva Boyd.
Eva Narcissus Boyd (June 29, 1943 – April 10, 2003), known by the stage name of Little Eva, was an American pop singer. Although some sources claim that her stage name was inspired by a character from the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, she stated in an interview that she was named after her aunt, which prompted her family to call her "Little Eva."

Biography
Born in Belhaven, North Carolina, she moved to the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York, at a young age. As a teenager, she worked as a maid and earned extra money as a babysitter for songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin.[1] It is often claimed that Goffin and King were amused by Boyd's particular dancing style, so they wrote "The Loco-Motion" for her and had her record it as a demo (the record was intended for Dee Dee Sharp).
However, as King said in an interview with NPR and in her "One to One" concert video, they knew she could sing when they met her, and it would be just a matter of time before they would have her record songs they wrote, the most successful being "The Loco-Motion."
Music producer Don Kirshner of Dimension Records was impressed by the song and Boyd's voice and had it released.[1] The song reached #1 in the United States in 1962. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[1] After the success of "The Loco-Motion," Boyd was stereotyped as a dance-craze singer and was given limited material.
The same year, Goffin and King wrote "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" (performed by the Crystals) after discovering that Boyd was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend.[2] When they inquired why she tolerated such treatment, Eva replied without batting an eyelid that her boyfriend's actions were motivated by his love for her.[2]
Phil Spector's arrangement of the song was ominous and ambiguous.[2]
It was a brutal song, as any attempt to justify such violence must be, and Spector's arrangement only amplified its savagery, framing Barbara Alston's lone vocal amid a sea of caustic strings and funereal drums, while the backing vocals almost trilled their own belief that the boy had done nothing wrong. In more ironic hands (and a more understanding age), 'He Hit Me' might have passed at least as satire. But Spector showed no sign of appreciating that, nor did he feel any need to. No less than the song's writers, he was not preaching, he was merely documenting.

Boyd's other single recordings were "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby," "Let's Turkey Trot," and a remake of the Bing Crosby standard "Swinging on a Star," recorded with Big Dee Irwin (though Boyd was not credited on the label).[3] Boyd also recorded the song "Makin' With the Magilla" for an episode of the 1964 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series The Magilla Gorilla Show.
In 1963, American Bandstand signed her with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars national U.S. tour and she was set to perform for the tour's 15th show scheduled for the night of November 22, 1963 at the Memorial Auditorium in Dallas, Texas when suddenly the Friday evening event was cancelled moments after U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while touring Dallas in an open car caravan.
She continued to tour and record throughout the sixties, but her commercial potential plummeted after 1964. She retired from the music industry in 1971. She never owned the rights to her recordings. Although the prevailing rumor in the 1970s was that she had received only $50 for "The Loco-Motion," it seems $50 was actually her weekly salary at the time she made her records (an increase of $15 from what Goffin and King had been paying her as nanny). Penniless, she returned with her three young children to North Carolina, where they lived in obscurity

The sad death of Nina Simone

It was reported tonight on the sad news that Nina Simone had passed away, she was 70.

Death of Nina Simone aged 70 By A Correspondent

THE American jazz and blues singer Nina Simone has died at her home near Marseille at the age of 70, her manager announced yesterday. Her death was from natural causes. “It is with great regret and sadness that we announce the death of the legendary jazz singer, the great Nina Simone, this morning at her home in Carry-le-Rouet,” Clifton Henderson said in a statement. Simone, whose raw, smokey voice was known to millions, was born Eunice Waymon in 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, the sixth of seven children of a poor family.

She began playing piano at the age of four and trained as a classical pianist at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. She began singing while working in a bar in Atlantic City and recorded her first records in the late 1950s, going on to earn the nickname the “High Priestess of Soul”.

Her first hit in Britain was Ain’t Got No . . . I Got Life in 1968 but she is perhaps best known for her interpretation of My Baby Just Cares for Me and her only Top 40 hit in the United States, George Gershwin’s I Loves You Porgy. Check out the tribute posted by kolla, pictures, scans and article just hit read more.

Broughton 20 Apr and 5 Current Soul Sam Plays

Broughton Soul Nite North Wales Saturday 20 April

It was case of get down expressway to Broughton on Saturday, famous for British Aerospace and also as the home of Soul Sams and Brian Ellis monthly soul nites. Have missed the last few so was looking forward to this one as with its own unique feel, crowd and atmosphere its always an enjoyable nite out. With a door tax of £2.50 and pints at £1.50 also a cheap nite out!! Venue is in the aerospace place, its held in the Silver Wings social club which is very plush, nice layout and gives place a uptown feel. Anyway fair few of us were doing the Saturday, plans were Broughton and then Goldbourne Niter afterwards, so Stevie T sussed out minibus and yet again it was case of get down that A55. Turned up well early to get max use of £1.50 pints, caught Brian Ellis warming up with nice thoughtful selection of 70s+ stuff.. Usual North Wales suspects started showing up , many from surrounding areas and places close by like Wrexham, crowd wise usually well mixed, ranging all types from local events only types to the ones who will travel at drop of a hat. As may expect with any event Sam is involved with, its a fairly well up for anything crowd, with 70-2ks+ very popular and always a good reaction. Dont get to hear much r&b or early soul usually, if at all, but depends on the guests. Chico was the first guest up, and dished out a great mixed set that fitted the Broughton style.

Ginger was next guest up, first time caught him for a while, suppose hard with what a fairly mixed crowd but seemed to us a very safe set, no "what is that" moments or raging desires to run to deck and find out more, which is what we were after, but he kept the crowd who were after good time northern happy with popular spins. Brian Ellis up and then Soul Sam, both giving out more Broughton style sets, R J Kelly new un being just one of many caught. Had to leave early ish to get to next destination, but night was going strong when left, and was a good one. As said its got its own unique feel and style, cause of this and venue, can have many different style nites be it a nite out with partner, or 8 of you out for the crack In between necking £1.50 pints, catch ups, and all the rest managed to grab a few words from Sam, notes are from well crumpled flyers, hopefully all details 100%

Asked for a selection of some current plays and Sam took time to give us details along with a bit of info, added stuff I picked up along the way.

Hamilton Movement Shes Gone Look Out 007

A lot ot of interest in this recently and looks like its taking off, Sam says been playing it for last 18 months. Misc info the flip in demand on deep funk scene. 800-1000 quid recent value given? Though more copies than you would think as some are securly in deep funk collectors hands.

Tolbert – I’ve Got It – Rojac
Sam said this 80s track which has a very soulful vocal is well big in modern rooms through out uk

Beres Hammond - Do This World a Favour -Rocky Gibbs
From a 90s lp, this track by highly regarded reggae artist is popular as a main hall play and massive at Yarmouth and Broughton Stream sample here

Margaret Little -Love Finds A Way- Genbro
(Info from David Flynn posted on Soul talk - Both penned by Wylie & Hestor A La King pub. Listed under BMI, but Popcorn has no recollection of the songs or her. The label is a division of A Go-Go records.) Extremely popular floorfiller , well catchy real thing 60s Detroit , recent one off acquisition by Sam from Adey Pierce (I think) and surely one the best new sounds around at moment. The flip "I Need Some Loving" was said by some to have been played out, but Sam states hasnt played it out anywhere, and imo the lesser and nowhere near as strong side

The Three Prophets - I Think I Really Love You - Together

Sam described this one as 70s cross over track with a great bass, delivered at a just above mid-tempo pace and great soul!! From 1974 Thanks to Sam for giving above comments, we had a bit of talk about things and his support for venues like Yarmouth and the tent at Fleetwood as they feature the style of soul he enjoys so much.

Gamble-Huff, Thom Bell and the Philly Groove

Gamble-Huff, Thom Bell and the Philly Groove By Pete Wingfield
Originally published in "Let It Rock"
Date of publication: January 1973
On a balmy night in the late summer of ’67, while the world was wearing flowers in its hair, I was sinking into my seat, trying to look inconspicuous amid hordes of black schoolkids and young mums in the middle of the stalls at the Uptown Theatre, Philadelphia Pa., two hours from the Big Apple by the mighty Greyhound. Philly, Doo Wop City: and the four young guys slithered around the stage, processes glistening as bright as their patent leathers, wearing orange suits with navel-length jackets and tapered bottoms so superthin that, embarrassingly, their underwear showed through and ominous dark patches were appearing in the armpit region. They were direct descendants of those early, unwitting acapella pioneers, and were second on the bill (the Tempts were on top), riding high on a national hit with ‘Cowboys To Girls’ — I think — and they were singing it unerringly at the Uptown five times a day, seven days a week. The group was called the Intruders. In winter of ’72, the wheel has turned full circle. The Intruders have created another monster, ‘She’s A Winner’, and it’s on the same label, Gamble. Both songs, and all the hits in between, were produced and composed by two men, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, at one studio, Sigma Sound, 212 N.12th St. Now, some forty million singles since they kicked off together, the duo and their associates have made the City of Brotherly Love shine stronger than ever before on the musical map. Not that it’s ever been exactly dim. In ’56, local entrepreneur Dick Clark started a lip-sync TV show, soon networked through A.B.C., which enjoyed a heyday in the late fifties/early sixties, allowing Philly talent a golden opportunity for nationwide exposure, offering Dick Clark a golden opportunity for managers’ backhanders, and ensuring that the city was always represented in force on the Hot 100 — at least until the English takeover in ‘64/’65. (Amazingly, American Bandstand survives to this day).
The situation spawned outfits like Bob Marcucci’s dreaded Chancellor Records, happily inflicting handsome non-talents like Fabian and Frankie Avalon on an eager public; such influential D.J.s as Jerry Blovat ‘the creator with the heater’, and Georgie Woods, ‘the guy with the goods’; and the vastly successful Cameo-Parkway label, home of the dance crazes, whose boss Bernie Loewe gave us Ernest Jenkins, alias Chubby Checker (did he really marry a Miss World?), the Orlons, (‘South Street’, ‘Don’t Hang Up’), the Dovells (‘Bristol Stomp’), Bobby Rydell (‘We Got Love; ‘Wild One’), all of whom had some measure of chart action in the U.K., and Dee Dee Sharp, (‘Mashed Potato Time’, ‘Gravy’). Dee Dee, born Dionne LaRue, is Mrs. Kenny Gamble now; he’d written and produced a song or two for her on Cameo in 1960. Leon Huff, a pianist from across the bridge in Camden, New Jersey, with work for Quincy Jones in N.Y. and a one-off national hit by home-town group Patti and the Emblems under his belt, met Gamble, from South Philly, when the latter was working on and off for renowned shrewd operator Jerry Ross (recently of Bill Deal and the Rhondells fame). Pooling their experience and hope, Gamble and Huff set about going for themselves. Kenny had already laid a foundation for success to come by forming a group, Kenny and the Romeos; himself on vocals, Roland Chambers, from Marvin Gaye’s band, on guitar, session organist Thom Bell and Earl Young, who’d played drums for Stevie Wonder.

It’s these very guys that now form the backbone of the city’s music industry, for they and a few others take care of the vital rhythm track on virtually every Philly-made hit. The Intruders (naturally!) sang on the first independent Gamble-Huff creation, ‘Gonna Be Strong’ on Excel, but the G-H sound really dates from their second, the same group’s ‘United’, Gamble Records’ initial release. It was a respectable hit — even came out here, on London — with a trendsetting production, unusual for its time, employing swirling strings, cascading harps, and above all, vibes. As bells are to Spector, so are vibes (usually handled by one Vince Montana) to Gamble and Huff. Since then, the sound has been polished to a fine art, but the seeds were right there in ‘United’. Later, less successful singles bore no resemblance to all this — the Madmen (Gamble 212) had an obscure goodie with lunatic sax on ‘African Twist’ and Bobby Marchan, of all people, lead singer on the classic Huey Smith New Orleans rockers, did a comical funky rap about the make-up — ‘Ain’t No Reason For Girls To Be Lonely’ (Gamble 216); but G-H’s trump card lay with the Intruders trite but endearing odes to city teenery: ‘Me Tarzan, You Jane’… ‘Love Is Like A Baseball Game’... ‘Who’s Your Favourite Candidate’. The titles speak for themselves.
As well as taking care of Gamble Records, the duo was working on a production company basis for major labels. Atlantic, hot with a master from Houston by Archie Bell and the Drells, forestalled the group’s certain destiny as one-hit wonders by handing them over to Gamble and Huff, who obliged with a near-unbroken string of hits over the ’67-’69 period (one of their oldies is, even as I write, in the British Twenty!); and Mercury got 2 1/2 albums’ worth from G-H’s collaboration with "the Iceman", Jerry Butler: gems like ‘Only The Strong Survive’, ‘Never Give You Up’, and ‘Brand New Me’, just kept on a-coming, till Gamble and Huff got to carping over royalty percentages. For many, the Butler material marks a creative peak in G-H’s output thus far. Floundering after the demise of his previous label, Vee-Jay, and sliding reluctantly into a second-rate supperclub act, Jerry found the ideal complement for his relaxed vocals in the duo’s sparkling production, and sophisticated yet hip arrangements furnished by regulars Bobby Martin and Thom Bell. Such was the success of the team who, like Motown, relied on staff writers for strong original material, that a set of sessions at Sigma Sound became a kind of refresher course for artists in a musical or commercial rut. Atlantic sent Wilson Pickett (whose first G-H single, ‘Don’t Let The Green Grass Fool You’, earned his first certified gold disc), the Sweet Inspirations, even Dusty Springfield.
With the Intruders and Gamble Records temporarily quiet in ’69, G-H launched a new logo, Neptune, distributed through Chess and the GRT corporation, which before collapsing the following year put out some great sides by Sigler, the Vibrations, and the oft-recorded O’Jays — as well as a couple of killers by the late Linda Jones with George Kerr producing. Annoyed at Neptune’s relative failure, and sure that the music was all there in the grooves, Gamble and Huff started yet another company, Philadelphia International, this time through CBS/Columbia, which, with good distribution, scored straight off with the Ebonys’ ‘You’re The Reason Why’ and hasn’t looked back since. The past year has brought two million-sellers ‘Back Stabbers’, from the O’Jays, returning to the G-H fold, and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes’ ‘I Miss You’. So what’s the secret? After all, Sigma Sound has no special assets. The sleeve notes to the Neptune LP O’Jays In Philadelphia describe it as ‘unhiplooking’ and the horn and strings are invariably local union dads. No, its’ the rhythm section — the erstwhile Romeos, plus Ronnia Baker on bass, Leon Huff himself of piano, additional guitarist Bobby Eli and Norman Harris, and sometimes Len Pakula on organ, that have the magic musically. Earl Young, for instance, will often lay off everything but hi-hat pedal and bass-drum till the first ‘hook’ chorus, say a third of the way through a track, giving it a characteristic lift when he finally bursts in. Huff has an interesting percussive style with a tasty line in boogie left hand (check out the O’Jays’ ‘Looky Looky’). Roland Chambers, if indeed it is him, leans on light, octave-based, Wes Montgomery-esque lines to convey an impression of effortless swing. Meanwhile back in the control room, Kenny G. and engineer Joe Tarsia put their individual touch on what’s coming through the monitors: punchy horns against smooth strings, imaginative percussion — claves, woodblocks, etc. — to beef things up, and that great drum sound, copiously spiced with echo. (And hell, a good gimmick always comes in useful — like the traffic noises that herald the Soul Survivors’ ‘Expressway To Your Heart’, or the race track effects at the start of the new Intruders, ‘She’s A Winner’). What comes out of all this is an airy, bouncy kind of a sound; tight, but not in the sense of clean and compact, as one might apply the word to Southern funk from Memphis or Muscle Shoals. And, like Motown again, custom-made for car radios.
Way down the bill that night in ’67 at the Uptown was a local trio, lisping slightly and resplendent in rose pink, the high-voiced lead singer mildly camping it up, to the audience’s delight. By a year after that show, the Delfonics were Philly’s hottest act. This was largely thanks to one man — composer, arranger, and producer for the group Thom (Tommy) Bell, the third of the mighty triumvirate that now rules Philadelphia. While still working often for G-H and associates as arranger (he did those absurd ‘Back Stabbers’ charts), Bell created his own label, Philly Groove, distributed (confusingly) through Bell Records, exclusively for the Delfonics, notching up a run of hits that only stopped a few months ago when the group split with him, lamely carrying on under his partner, manager Stan Watson. Thom’s songs are intricate and satisfying. He often will plant rich, moody intros only to change to a different key and tempo when the song comes in; or lay out the verse in an unrelated key to the chorus. ‘I’m Sorry’, ‘Break Your Promise’, ‘Ready Or Not, Here I Come’, ‘You Get Yours And I’ll Get Mine’, and for my money the best record of its type ever to emerge from Philly — the cataclysmic ‘Didn’t I Blow Your Mind This Time’. Every one was a short but grandiose epic, hugely commercial but at the same time ambitious and unarguably solid in musical conception. William Hart, lead singer with the group, would come up with the lyrics. Slight and unimportant in themselves, it was the soulful whine he delivered them in that mattered. But Thom Bell took care of biz on everything else: panoramic arrangements leaning heavily on instruments traditionally not used in R&B, like shimmering celli and Wagnerian French horns.
A lost LP track — ‘How Could You’ on the Didn’t I album, is surely one of T.B.’s great moments. Beautiful, spinetingling self-indulgence as a series of changes is repeated hypnotically, with increasing intensity, for five minutes, electric sitar in the lead over a hefty backbeat, with the voices coming in, softly, on the fourth minute. In 1971, on the Delfonics departure, Thom Bell didn’t blink an eyelid. Guided by Hugo and Luigi’s Avco Records to a local Philly group, the Stylistics, just off a minor hit on a small label with ‘You’re A Big Girl Now’, he moved to even greater heights both artistically and in terms of success proportionate to product, for the Stylistics’ album yielded no less than four single gold records. It was the Delfonics revisited, and more. Russell Thompkins Jnr., lead singer, has perhaps an even finer falsetto than Hart (this time out one Linda Creed does the words): he explained to me on a recent U.K. visit that Thom Bell goes through each song round a piano with the group, sketching out harmonics and topline, cuts a basic track with rhythm section, brings the group into the studio briefly for a few hours to add the vocal, then gets to work himself on the ‘sweetening’. Next thing the Stylistics themselves know, the record is out! One could well criticize such a process, on grounds of ‘conveyor-belt soul’. But Lord, I’m not about to complain when the end result is so exquisite. Bell’s work on his own songs has the edge for me over the Gamble-Huff stuff. He goes for a different sound. Though using the same musicians, studio, and engineer, he somehow contrives to make the final mix more integrated, with less sense of overdubbing and a greater corporate identity. He’s as capable at the board as with the baton, churning out ingenious, even moving arrangements that are creamy but never sickly. Totally committed until recently to the fly-by-night 3-minute single, designed for saturation AM airplay and swift obscurity, men like Gamble, Huff and Bell have turned handicap to advantage by making almost every master a complete, concise statement in itself. But up to the last few months G-H and cohorts remained to the rock consumer remote, unfashionable figures. Happily, though, all three men are riding their current crest of a wave on singles without compromise.
Bell’s output with the Stylistics (he’s also started to work with the Spinners) has got to be his best ever, track for track, whilst the O’Jays and H. Melvin smashes are among the most soulful sides put together by Gamble and Huff. No way are any of them flagging. (An attempt by G-H in 1970 to broaden their market via a 5th-Dimension type ‘class’ group, the New Direction, was a dismal flop. Similarly, for example, Stax’s pop product is notoriously unsuccessful. Moral: do what you do do good!). You won’t find any blues, not much country either, in Philadelphia; but it’s the acknowledged center for Northern black gospel and birthplace with N.Y., of corner-boy vocal groups. So it annoys me when rock experts seeking ‘roots’ should dismiss the things coming out of Sigma Sound as being too ephemeral and superficial, when the Philly men’s respect for an inspiration from these origins is undoubted. Why the Intruders had a hit in ’69 with a faithful revival of the Dreamlovers’ ‘We’re Gonna Get Married’! Outsiders, unfamiliar with the idiom, can bypass it as not "hard" enough, or laugh at the piercing falsetto, originated by the old ‘bird’ groups like the Flamingoes and used by artists like Hart and Thompkins. But it is part of a living tradition, adopted without self-consciousness and as absorbing as anything in blues or country music. The records stand up by any contemporary standard in pop as a whole. To my mind at least, today’s lush backdrops and technologically perfect productions extend, rather than smother, that tradition. I know, in these enlightened times, the black original still remains unnoticed until and unless copied in the white market — how else are the Osmonds as big as the Jackson Five?
But the dwindling mass of punters who still wear blinkers making them blind to uptown soul, are missing the point, and a lot of wonderful music.

Just how rare is Don Gardner 45?

On the Modern Soul list was a bit of discussion about a famous rairty. Thought the below may be of interest to others not on the list, so asked John Smith (Oxford way one) if ok to pass on, thanks go out to John as he said ok!
http://www.topica.com/lists/ModernSoul

Someone asked ... "Don Gardner Cheatin Kind ....... I was just interested to know how rare it is >" Johns reply: I talked at length with Don at this years Prestatyn Weekender. He was either on the road or in the studio throughout the 60s (in the 70s he got fed up, quit performing himself & became Curtis Mayfields road manager -- doin all the management / bookin tasks !!!!) He (to this day) had no idea that he had anything released on the Sedgrick / Cedric label. HE was never based in Chicago & never recorded there. He would however give / send his FRIEND Jimmy Vanleer copies of new tracks he had cut to listen to (Jimmy ran this label !!!). So I guess Jimmy just pressed up limited copies of Dons cuts & send em around to the local radio DJs. Then if any took off, he could have negotiated a good licensing deal & split the money with Don. None were picked up for major local radio play & so no licensing action occured. The Tru-Glo-Town situation was similar. Don cut lots for them but was told the studio / warehouse burnt down & so the company was bust & couldnt pay him anything. Yet they continued to lease his stuff out (to the likes of Verve Records AND maybe Sack / Cedric ????). I guess someone knew the fire was gonna happen & took the master tapes home with them beforehand !!!!!!! The Sack releases are even stranger. In the 60s Monk Higgins used Sack to release stuff (limited press to supply Chicago radio stn DJs only) he was tryin to win a licensing deal on (thus getting a decent advance payment from a major label - he could then keep all this for himself I guess, rather than pass some along to the artist & producer who would probably be happy enough to learn that they now had a deal to record for a major). Again Sack was Chicago based BUT Don never even knew Monk & never sent tapes thru to him in the Windy city. I guess Jimmy Vanleer was once again involved as the middleman. Needless to say, Don now things a lot less of his old friend Jimmy. None of the above really helps in identifying just how many of each 45 were pressed up, but suffice to say is was a limited number.

Very Odd Bits of Stuff

Exporting the cheese Interesting reports from mainland europe on two uk djs who it seems decided to give them a taste of how bad some parts of the uk scene is nowadays, boots, cds and cheesy and talking well cheesy here, classics were apparently dished out under the guise of rare soul. Heard that some continental soul fans werent impressed one bit. Jazz FM Searling Show This Sunday the online feed was working and yet such is me current life, still only managed to catch the last 2 records! So standy by for a detailed report then. The obvious Candi Staton was one, then had to smile, must have only caught 5 mins or so but managed to catch a lengthy mention for...... Prestwich, yes regular no lifers may have caught me going on tounge in cheek about how many times it gets mentioned. Had to laugh when heard it geting a non advert plug! This was followed by Edwin Starr "Way over there " ( bit hazy now so may be wrong) And that was it! Apart from a lengthy advert at the end Pretty sure the advert was for the Locarno in Birmingham on this Easter Sunday, as it mentioned top UK djs, top sounds, top venue.... so it had to be didnt it ? ;-) Apoligies for briefness, given meself a good talking to and will try harder to catch it all in future. The soul source web site 99 year plan Bit busy in real world, so bit behind on things here, as more than likely read have a lot of contributions which is appreciated. Certainly been impressed by the lengths some people go to pass on info to soul fans. Anyway current score on site is.... Next step all planned and will go up once find time, even though always seems in turmoil there is a plan behind it all .....honest! Hopefully will all come together soon. Cause of this and lack of time, the DMSC sounds, photos, reviews etc been put back a few days or so, to coincede with next step. Note: The site now has a AUTO LOGIN feature What it means is that members should only have to login once and that should be it, next time visit should remember you and save you the hassle. Whats worthwhile about being a member? .. get back to you on that The wide Wide World of Websites Ok muted feedback on the wap mobile phone service, so for now it stay as it is just the latest news and event information, same as you get in the event guide an dnews section. Had to laugh yet again when noticed that some web site had used some reviews from here that I threw together, seems am part of its roving band of reporters ensuring that it is the only place for the latest rare soul news! The cheeky t*** got a neck though, as apart from not bothering asking, he then fails to give even a link or a mention to where he ripped it from. Still as its "the offical number one northern web.... should be honoured? Too right. onwards.....

Review: 6Ts @ The 100 Club -12 April 2003

6Ts @ The 100 Club: 12 April 2003
DJs: Mick Smith, Butch and Ady Croasdell plus guests Kenny Burrell and Keith Money.
Another sound night with the DJs particularly excelling. Kenny played his male version of Sweet Temptation (very different to Martha Starr) and gave airings to a lot of sounds we dont get to hear enough of.
Keith shone with a great deal of thought going into his set, changing the moods and tempos at just the appropriate times, he more than justified his recent signing for the 6Ts Cleethorpes weekender.
Mick enjoyed himself far too much (stitching Ady up over the mike several times), he let the rare boys have their moments and pleased the crowd with whatever it took throughout.
Butch was on top form and opened his second set with a girly acetate that sounded like the Sapphires at their best.
Ady, in his own words, had his moments and was particularly pleased with the first outing of The Themes "Do Yourself A Favour" and the crowds response to The Devonnes "Doin The Gettin Up".
There were great turn outs from the West Midlands, Nottingham and even the Bar Italia Scooter Club - but we dont seem to get the far flung Northerners any more, theyre either getting old or too lazy . (Ady's comments.... Not mine!)
Kenny Burrell kindly forwarded the playlist for his two sets which went as follows:-
