Review Sleepless Nights Soul Club May 2003

Hi our 2nd year underway: heres a review from Wendy Flynn

Friday 23rd May was the first Sleepless Nights of year II. Anyone attending must have had low expectations - it couldn't possibly better the attendance and atmosphere of the 1st anniversary bash. Could it? Friday night would indicate SN will continue to be a great club. It also proved that SN is establishing a legacy.

Al was up first on the decks. Under the tutelage of Danny, Pip and John, Al has been spending slightly less money on beer than usual and instead has invested in some nice records. Despite the early hour, the floor was soon filling up to the sounds of The Monitors, The Trilons and The 4 Tops.

Next up was Paul and Willie ? double decking. Paul has taken Willie under his wing and after a good spot at the all-nighter in April, Willie has shown hes now capable of flying solo. Nonetheless as a tag team, Paul & Willie are the WWF champs when it comes to spinning tunes 60s RnB and solid soul sounds.

Their spot was followed by Mark T, our favourite uncle, not content with occasionally handing out free cds but spoiling us rotten with a choice selection of 6ts tunes from shufflers to stompers. Then Brian reached into his trick bag and pulled out an impressive selection of 60s & 70s and magiced up an impressive set in front of our very eyes and ears. Next Pip played one of his trademark stomper sets.

Pip was raised on a dubious diet of speed metal. Danny has improved Pips musical nutrition & now Pip has a box of stompers for breakfast, lunch and tea. Karl started off his set with Never Learned to Dance, which saw the kids tripping up over their toes to get on the floor. He made sure to keep everyone there with a set full of classics.

As the night wore on Grandmaster Danny D took his turn on the decks and played a faultless set giving us hardly time to breathe. Its a wonder no one dropped dead from a heartattack as John Dunne (as always - playing to/for the crowd) worked us into a frenzy. And in the finest Irish showband tradition he sent us home sweating.

Like Little Carl Carlton, Sleepless Nights might be small - but the competition aint nothing yall.

Our club is growing stronger day by day.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
