Stan, Pete and I were reminiscing the other day with regard to the start of The Sink revival and we realised that it will be 20 years next summer since Pat Costigan organised a Sink member’s reunion at the newly refurbished Magnet, the home of the original Sink at 45 Hardman Street in Liverpool.

Neil English, the charismatic proprietor from the 60’s attended, along with many of the original members.

By the October of 2000, Pat had convinced the then owners to let him start regular monthly Sunday afternoon sessions. He had managed to enrol Stan and Norman Killen, both original Sink members, along with Kevin Murray to DJ. In fact, Norman had also been one of the original DJ’s back in the day.

Over the next few years, things evolved so that Pete, along with me, having also been an original Sink member, were added to the DJ roster. Sadly, due to another change of ownership, the regular Sunday afternoon sessions were terminated in 2006. However, not before Pat had been able to premier his wonderful film of the Sink to a packed audience shortly before we closed. Unfortunately, due to someone objecting to a very small part of the sound track, on what is a piece of social history, it is not possible to see and listen to the film on You Tube as was intended, but it is now available to view on our Sink Facebook page under ‘’Announcements’’, 3rd topic down.

There then followed a somewhat nomadic existence trying to keep The Sink going, using a number of different venues around the Liverpool city centre.

Fast forward to 2015, and out of the blue, Tony Brookes received a phone call from a friend who said that there was a club in Liverpool looking for someone to run Sunday sessions playing authentic 60’s music. To say he was amazed when he was told it was at the Magnet would be an understatement. Tony contacted me, Stan, Pete, and the first event back at the original venue was in the May of that year.

Due to the Magnet recently changing into a non-music venue, we have had to move once again, as you all now know, to the basement of our wonderful new home at Heebie Jeebies on Seel Street (having chosen this from 3 different venues who offered to accommodate us).

The Sunday afternoon format, which we started back in 2000, is the most popular formula for us, as we now find a lot of people are making a nice weekend of it all by staying in Liverpool to enjoy The Sink, whilst also enjoying the other facilities and attractions that the city has to offer; and we really appreciate all the support that we get.

Great write up Dennis, a little potted history of the last 20 years of the Sink Soul Club and the fact that the club was innovative in the establishment of the now bustling Sunday afternoon soul scene.

Sunday afternoon has become a very busy time for soul events, at the Sink we have a music policy that is both original and different. Seems to be working as the Sink is one of the busiest Sunday afternoon events in the North West, thanks to everyone for their continued support.

Quite a few people staying in Liverpool this weekend and attending our new venue for the first time on Sunday. Please make yourselves known if it is your first visit to The Sink.

Just a few hours to go till the Easter Sunday Sink Soul Club takes place, looking like another very busy event so don't forget to arrive early if you want a seat.

See you all later.
