First comp. l.p. i ever bought was "out on the streets again" which included "soul self satisfaction", "i only get this feeling", "you can't stop a man in love", "girl watcher", and a personal favourite: "DARKEST DAYS". I danced my little heart out to that... still love it to bits today...

Absolutely fantastic album that one.

i quite enjoy the LP Motown Memories 16 Non-Stop Hits. Much of the material on the album is culled from the Ric-Tic label. All tracks were chosen by Trever Hall, and faded in and out perfectly from one track to another, his sleeve notes suggest the the sounds were played at his local Disco, all orig artist.

For me in Northern terms and at the period it was released it has to be Levine's "Solid Soul Sensations". Just such quality of tracks IMO

No, take that back, worst - Stax Northern Disco Sounds, compiled by Ian Dewhirst, Stax - as I said before, the only Northern compilation with only 2 Northern tracks on it.

Because you can't take Spark or Casino Classics lp's seriously, but you can take compilations put together by knowledgable people seriously. In the long run / Name it and claim it - this sort of thing is second rate B side material, as is most of the Stax album. Medicine Bend?

Capitol Soul Casino was my introduction into Northern Soul

Nancy Wilson (End of our love) hadnt even started singing, and the intro had me 100% hooked.

Record collector vol 1 on Destiny. Arin Demain, The Inticers etc. Great stuff.

And a couple of naughty ones. Colin Bee's Lp, Northern Soul Gold with oldies like Otis Smith on, and All Night long. The Chicago Lp released about Stafford time. Mine is 533. I thought there was only 500

I'll guess thats the reason you're here too then? Not exactly the rarest of the rare material wise, but it got me listening to northern soul.

Favourite though would have to be the first of the Northern Soul Story compilations, just for the amount of (what was then) new-to-me music.

That was the first LP I bought, I remember picking it up second hand in about 1968/69. My first introduction to MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS - My Baby Loves Me, which to this day remains my fave. track by them.

Yeah Medicine Bend is awful, but at the end of the day compilation albums were a valuble introduction for a lot of people back then and I think 3 or 4 good tracks on an album actually changed some peoples lives. I know that when I bought the yellow cheapo MOTOWN album with the awful cartoon dancers on the front, FRANCES NERO'S 'Keep on loving me' explodede into my eardrums and was the biggest single influence on my 'conversion' at that time...

I Agree Back Trak 6 is a great compilation My fave is The Parliaments I can feel the ice melting . 1 of my desert discs .Not only is it a great record but it brings back memories of a past romance. I was the cold one.

As a callow youth I had (still have!) all the usual suspects - the Casino Classics and the Grapevine LPs etc. They were fine and not a bad snapshot of the state of the Northern Scene of the time - both good and not so good.

But the compilation LP that really changed and educated my view of how amazing rare soul could be was Kent's 'Pure Soul' (Kent 019). It blew me away - not a bad track on it.

I only bought volume 6 about 4 years later for about 20p in a sale in W.H.Smith in Ealing Broadway.

LOL, it's not bad considering the source material! I think I was blocked from using "Sweet Sherry" and some of the other obvious stuff at the time and PYE were in a real hurry to get the bugger out.....

It did however spawn a lifetime of producing compilations, most of which I'm pretty happy with.

Up with the very best of them must be the first U.K. Temptations Greatest Hits - TML 11042 from 1967.

If I was selling example below it would be in my "shabby chic" category. Looking like every 1960's album cover should. Every crease a battle scar from some teenage party or youth club evening.
