Over the past 10 years or so, many "new" records to grace the scene were released before 1964, which means probably before the term "Soul" was properly used. I decided to put a list together of the titles I know from this period of music, and a lot of them tend to fall into the R&B category (love or hate 'em!). excello thing, quite popular a few years ago

does sound dodgy imo at home but worked for some at time when out and loud

someone described it once as a sort of vocal to good rockin

once played it on radio, was followed by comments such as "we had to get wind up gramphone for that one"

How about JImmy Ruffin's "Don't feel sorry for me" on Miracle? Not bad for a 43 year old record!

got to add one to that list, i've read it was recorded/released in 63 put seen it on a Lupine compilation where the sleeve notes says 64, but its the BRILLIANT 'Has it happened to you yet' the Falcons (what a line up of chaps), again covered by Edwin, somebody might shed light on this one. It deffinetly a tears to the eye job for me.

Yes, that's right it did come out on a compilation ( speciality records U.K ) lp6602.

It also has Bobby Williams ..Tell it to my face, another great track. "Has it happened to you yet " did come out on Lupine in 7" format, however is very rare.

Would imagine about £200 mark at guess.

The Walk by Jimmy McCracklin was issued in about 1958 on US Chess, on UK London, I imagine on both 45 and 78. It was played on BBC's 6.5 Special. In 1964 it was played in London "Mod" clubs, and on the dance spot on Ready Steady Go. It was re-issued on an EP, R&B Showcase on Pye International. In my opinion a great track that I would love to hear played now.

Wasn't Zig Zag Lightening also another pre 64 wheel spin, spin geddit? oh never mind!

Yvonne Baker and the sensations on Argo "Eyes" certain this was pre 1964, plus it's one of the most atmospheric ballads i own.

The Walk is great. There is another nice version of it by Lou Cazz on VeeJay, with the Jimmy McCracklin orchestra. I'm not sure of the exact vintage of all of these 'newies' but I think they were pre '64 or thereabouts.

Hi Mike enjoyed the Sensations link, yeah i picked the "Eyes" thing up from a freind of mine, and i must say i love it, guess thats the endearing beauty of this music, we all can't like the same thing, and i suppose that just shows how rich, deep and varied the styles of soul that are available to us.
